Boar’s Head announced Friday it has indefinitely shut down a Virginia deli meat plant and discontinuing the liverwurst that is linked to a deadly multi-state listeria outbreak that also sickened dozens. In what it called a “dark moment” in the company’s history, Boar's Head said in a Friday statement it’s indefinitely closing its plant in Jarratt, Virginia, where the liverwurst product connected to the outbreak was made. We will work to assist each of our employees in the transition process.”This year’s liverwurst outbreak killed nine and hospitalized 57. Boar’s Head recalled its Strassburger Brand Liverwurst on July 25 over concerns it contained the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Some increased measures, according to Boar’s Head, include: Appointing a new chief food safety officer who will report directly to the company’s president; launching a food safety council comprised of independent food safety experts; and creating an enhanced and companywide food safety and QA program, Boar’s Head said.

CNN —Britain’s approval of its first new deep coal mine in decades was unlawful, London’s High Court ruled on Friday following a legal challenge brought by environmental campaigners. Friends of the Earth and South Lakeland Action on Climate Change challenged the previous Conservative government’s 2022 approval of a coking coal mine in northwest England. Britain dropped its defence of the legal challenges after a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year said planning authorities must consider the impact of burning, not just extracting, fossil fuels when deciding whether to approve projects. Developer West Cumbria Mining fought the case and said the project — which planned to extract coking coal for manufacturing steel, rather than to generate electricity — would be “a unique ‘net zero’ mine”. A spokesperson for West Cumbria Mining said the company “will consider the implications of the High Court judgment and has no comment to make at this time”.

CNN —The U.S. government’s road safety agency wants the auto industry to design new vehicles including increasingly large SUVs and pickup trucks so they reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it’s proposing a new rule setting testing and performance requirements to minimize the risk of pedestrian head injuries. The rule is aimed largely at SUVs and pickup trucks, which have grown in size and hood height over the years, causing blind spots for drivers. NHTSA said pedestrian deaths increased 57% from 2013 to 2022, from 4,779 to 7,522. Data show that pedestrian deaths when hit by the front of a vehicle are most common for SUVs and trucks.

The murder complaint, filed Tuesday in the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, is the first legal case to be filed against Hasina following her deadly crackdown on huge protests against government employment quotas, that erupted across Bangladesh last month. A federal judge held last week that Google has a monopoly on online search and has been illegally defending that monopoly for years. The verdict is important and correct, yet it leaves open an important question: What should the remedy be? The government’s case centered on payments, which in 2021 totaled more than $26 billion, that Google pays Apple and others to be the default search engine on their products. In doing so, Google kept Apple out of the search market and, the judge ruled, weakened its other competitors. But if the court merely decrees that Google now abandon those agreements, it won’t be enough to unlock a long-monopolized market.
