How CNN projects elections

CNN —Millions of Americans will be tuning in to CNN and other networks on election night as returns roll in. They’ll be waiting to see who wins, something CNN will determine with a series of projections. I talked to Jennifer Agiesta, CNN’s director of polling and election analytics, about how CNN approaches the job of projecting a winner. But it tends to be after Election Day in a place like Pennsylvania. Is there a precedent in your career for a race that’s this close heading into Election Day?

Naomi Whitehead, 114, is the oldest living person in the US. She shared some of the lifestyle choices that she thinks have helped her live so long. Whitehead never expected to live so long, telling New Castle News in 2023: "I'll live as long as the Lord lets me." But average life expectancies are growing, alongside interest in how our lifestyles can help us live longer. Whitehead is now the oldest living person in the US after the previous titleholder died in October.

Those relationships may prove especially valuable in the coming days as the 2024 election comes to a close. In swing states like North Carolina and Michigan, local journalists have doubled as campaign experts, covering presidential candidate rallies and interviewing voters by the dozen. CNN asked seven swing state editors and reporters about what they’ve been experiencing in the run-up to Election Day. In Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has invested heavily in statewide polling and stationed reporters across the city and state. “Months of reporting and listening have told us this: Georgia voters are largely dissatisfied with our country’s direction,” editor-in-chief Leroy Chapman Jr. said.

Exit polls are conducted by Edison Research for the National Election Pool on behalf of a consortium of media companies: CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. The polling locations were themselves selected through random sampling, meaning the resulting interviews should be representative of Election Day voters across the state or nationally. In addition to the national exit poll, there are also exit polls conducted in specific states with key, competitive presidential or down-ballot races. Even so, exit polls are still polls, with margins for error – which means they’re most useful when treated as estimates, rather than precise measurements. That’s particularly true for the earliest exit poll numbers, which won’t yet have been adjusted to match the final election results.

If the former president wins, Caparra’s “my version of this country” comment could be instructive. Economic concerns dominateIf Trump wins, voters like Joseph Knowles and Brian McMutuary will be part of his comeback math too. CNNIf Harris wins, women will be the foundation of her coalition. Some health experts said elevating Kennedy, even in an informal Trump administration position, could potentially lead to severe consequences for patients, drugmakers and the nation's public health overall. That could exacerbate the nation's existing public health challenges, such as declining childhood vaccination rates for several preventable diseases, some experts say. "I think we could reasonably predict that there would be a decline in vaccination rates among children, and perhaps vaccination overall." Drugmakers such as Pfizer and Moderna are still recovering from falling Covid vaccination rates in the U.S., which have dented their profits over the last two years. Kennedy's other proposals for overhauling federal health agencies will likely be difficult to execute.

“I just believe that.”It’s a belief Vance has articulated at his rallies ahead of Election Day. “Even when I was not a Trump guy back then … that really pissed me off.”For Vance, the sentiments are personal. Feels kind of weird, but here we are.”Reflecting at the end of his campaign, Vance said he most enjoyed the opportunity to travel with his children and with Usha, who sat beside him paying household bills. Legal experts told NBC News that the disclosure could have legal fallout for Musk across multiple jurisdictions under laws designed to protect consumers from deceptive practices. Chris Gober, a lawyer for America PAC, made the disclosure at a hearing about the giveaways. Elon Musk awarded Kristine Fishell a $1 million check at a town hall in Pittsburgh on Oct. 20. After leaving the workforce during the pandemic because she couldn’t find affordable child care, Longenecker said her family has been economizing. But her husband recently got a new job that pays more per hour and with lower health care costs. Her husband’s side gig has been “flourishing,” giving them steady monthly income and a glimpse of a future beyond waiting tables. Her monthly retirement income of around $7,600 is comfortable, but homeowners insurance, utilities and long-term care costs are weighing on her. CNN —The tumultuous 2024 election is ending with a contrast that encapsulates America’s fateful choice on election eve. The vice president also proposes reforms to improve the lives of working Americans — but hers are less revolutionary than Trump’s. If she loses Pennsylvania, Harris would need a combination of other swing states, including Georgia, Nevada and Arizona, where poll averages also show no clear leader. But the findings, which suggested a shift toward Harris from the previous Iowa Poll in September, also showed the vice president with a strong advantage among women. If such a pattern is repeated nationwide, the vice president could be headed to victory if she can limit her deficit to Trump among White males especially.

They show that neither Harris nor Trump have broken out in the swing states. Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin will likely determine whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump wins. The final set of New York Times/Siena College surveys of each state showed Harris narrowly leading among likely voters in Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, while Harris and Trump are tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden in 2020 won Georgia by a razor-thin margin, while Trump narrowly won North Carolina that year. Harris is winning female voters by 16 points (57% to 41%), according to the final NBC News poll.

Voting systems: How we know the election is secure

Musk has used X to spread unfounded allegations about voting systems, laying groundwork to question the election before it happens. To better understand the security of US voting systems and why there’s no indication that they’re not secure, I talked to CNN’s Zachary Cohen, who covers national security, and Sean Lyngaas, who covers cybersecurity. There are three large election equipment vendors in the US: Dominion; ES&S, or Election Systems and Software; and Hart InterCivic. Dominion Voting Systems ballot-counting machines are lined up at a Torrance County warehouse during testing of election equipment with local candidates and partisan officers in Estancia, New Mexico, on September 29, 2022. COHEN: We know people, these pro-Trump operatives and lawyers, have already gotten access to election software – voting software, voting systems in Georgia, copied the entire election database from several counties.
