While the Irish government declined to comment on the claim, Reuters found no evidence of the authority making any such announcements. Reuters correspondent Conor Humphries, who reported on the ground during the riot in central Dublin, said he did not see any army vehicles and only police presence. Reuters did not find any imagery of army vehicles inside the city centre where the riot took place. The Defence Forces did not deploy any assets, and none were requested, in support of Ireland’s police in relation to the unrest, the spokesperson said. “The Defence Forces conduct routine driving and training exercises both in Dublin City and beyond very regularly,” the spokesperson said.

One of Britain’s most senior cabinet ministers, Suella Braverman, has triggered political turmoil by writing a newspaper article that attacked the country’s largest police force over its approach to a pro-Palestinian protest, and implicitly challenged the authority of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Ms. Braverman, the home secretary responsible for law enforcement, immigration and national security, has long been a divisive figure at the heart of the governing Conservative Party, whose provocative rhetoric has won support on the hard right while alienating more moderate colleagues. On Thursday, there were calls for her resignation after she wrote an opinion piece for The Times of London that accused the city’s main police force of bias in its reluctance to ban a pro-Palestinian protest march scheduled for the weekend. She also described the tens of thousands of people who have attended regular Saturday protests in London in support of Palestinians as “hate marchers,” “Islamists” and “mobs,” despite the fact that the demonstrations have been mostly peaceful.

One lawmaker said a Republican policy of waiting three days before voting on legislation left little time to act this week. House Republicans are due to focus the agenda for the week on passing their own partisan appropriations bills for 2024. The Senate has passed three appropriations bills in a package known as a minibus. While the Senate legislation enjoys strong bipartisan support, the House has passed only partisan Republican measures opposed by Democrats. Only one category of appropriations legislation, covering military construction and veterans benefits, has passed both chambers in markedly different forms.
