Los Angeles AP —A former Olympic snowboarder for Canada has been charged with running a drug trafficking ring that shipped vast amounts of cocaine across the Americas and killed four people, authorities said Thursday. Wedding competed for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, authorities said. Wedding faces separate drug trafficking charges in Canada that date back to 2015, said Chris Leather, chief superintendent with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Wedding previously was convicted in the US of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and was sentenced to prison in 2010, federal records show. Estrada said US authorities believe that after Wedding’s release, he resumed drug trafficking and has been protected by the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico.

Genaro Garcia Luna, who for several years led Mexico’s fight against the country’s violent drug trade, was sentenced on Wednesday to more than 38 years in U.S. prison for accepting bribes from the cartels he was supposed to fight. In announcing the 460-month sentence, Cogan said Garcia Luna should have “some light at the end of the tunnel,” crediting him for his work teaching fellow inmates at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. But the judge said Garcia Luna lived a “double life,” with the harm he caused outweighing his good deeds. Garcia Luna served as Mexico’s public security minister from 2006 to 2012. Before learning the sentence, Garcia Luna said in court that Mexico’s government and criminal groups had smeared him.

US efforts to produce semiconductor chips will continue regardless of who wins the election. AdvertisementNo matter who wins the presidential election this November, President Joe Biden can rest easy knowing one thing: The US's chip manufacturing push isn't going anywhere. The US has seen its share of overall chip production fall from 37% of the world's supply in 1990 to 12%. While many factories remain under construction, the federal funding has already helped boost US chip production. According to a report published last year by the trade and lobbying group Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics, the US semiconductor industry will face a shortage of 67,000 workers by 2030, including technicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

The EU's NIS 2 cybersecurity directive sets a high benchmark for companies over their internal cybersecurity systems and practices. On Thursday, the new directive officially became enforceable by member states. However, most EU member states have yet to implement NIS 2 in their own respective national laws, meaning that enforcement is likely to be spotty. NIS 2 — or the Network and Information Security Directive 2 — is an EU directive that aims to increase the security of IT systems and networks across the bloc. Fladgate's Wright said that effectiveness of NIS 2 as a regulation will largely depend on consistent implementation and enforcement across EU member states.

CNBC's Jim Cramer critiqued Tuesday's massive semiconductor sell-off, saying some on Wall Street don't recognize the lasting importance of advanced graphics chips for artificial intelligence, especially ones from Nvidia . Semiconductor companies saw their stocks plummet on Tuesday after ASML posted a disappointing quarter a day earlier than expected. Cramer pointed out that the one bright spot in ASML's poor report was its sales of chips related to AI. And according to Cramer, AI is a large part of the reason companies continue to invest heavily in nuclear power. "In fact, it's only gonna increase, especially when tech companies and utilities are furiously trying to put up nuclear power plants to meet the energy demands of Nvidia's chips."
