Researchers at Aston University in England estimated that between 2021 and 2023, annual UK exports of goods to the EU were 17% lower than they would have been had Brexit never happened. Exports in most sectors have decreased since 2021, according to the report. “The UK-EU trade relationship remains crucial for both parties,” Tuesday’s report said, adding that the relationship “underpins” economic stability and growth. According to the study’s lead author, Professor Jun Du, the post-Brexit trade deal has “introduced substantial barriers” to UK-EU trade. The report is the latest piece of research to highlight the negative effects Brexit has had on the UK economy.

How rate cuts workCentral banks cut interest rates for two main reasons: financial conditions are expected to worsen drastically, or inflation has cooled so much that leaving interest rates at high levels will be overly restrictive and put a drag on the economy. The Fed lowers its target rate by buying more securities, namely Treasury notes and mortgage-backed securities. When they have more money to lend out, they don’t need to charge such high interest rates on mortgages and other types of loans they offer. Business' hiring decisions can be influenced by the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions. When the Fed lowers or raises rates, it takes a while for the full effect of those moves to be felt across the economy.

Fed funds futures rallied on Monday to push the chance of a 50 basis point rate cut to 67%, against 30% a week ago. "That's because the contrast between central bank outlooks will remain starkest between the Fed and the BoJ, for the time being." It also acquired Italian lottery and gaming operator Sisal in 2022, and just reported record online market share in Italy in the second quarter. The new drink isn't Coke's first entry into the premixed cocktail market. SHANGHAI — The normally bustling financial hub of Shanghai was brought to a standstill Monday as residents sheltered at home to wait out the worst of Typhoon Bebinca. The Category 1 storm, which made landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning, is the most powerful tropical cyclone to directly hit the city in more than seven decades. Packing top wind speeds of 94 miles per hour near its eye, Bebinca landed in the city of nearly 25 million around 7:30 a.m. (7:30 p.m. Sunday ET), state media reported, the strongest storm to strike Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949. Resorts in Shanghai, including Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park and Shanghai Wild Animal Park, have been temporarily closed and many ferries halted. Shanghai is rarely subject to direct hits from strong typhoons that generally make landfall farther south in China.

Four people were wounded at a Brooklyn train station Sunday when police officers shot at a man threatening them with a knife, authorities said. The bloody confrontation began when two officers confronted a man who entered the station without paying his fare, officials said. They followed him on to a train that had pulled into the station and fired two Tasers, but neither incapacitated the man, Maddrey said. Mayor Eric Adams visited the wounded officer in the hospital Sunday, ahead of a news conference addressing the shooting. In 2019, NYPD officers accidentally shot and killed two fellow officers while confronting crime suspects in separate on-duty incidents.
