After I moved out, my mom kept trying to get me to take boxes of my old childhood toys. When I finally had to deal with it, I learned a new appreciation for my mom and her sentimentality. I was helping my mom move from her 3-story forever home into a 55+ condo community, and everything she'd saved from my childhood had to go. As I came across the old assignments and publications, amidst my childhood toys, my feelings of stress and aggravation transformed into a flood of love and gratitude. On April 27, 2023, Diana Kulyk's father told her he was leaving the next day to start training to fight Russia. Diana had already raised about $30,000 over the previous year to buy protective gear for childhood friends fighting in Ukraine. Diana's efforts are part of an immense crowdfunding movement helping fuel Ukraine's fight against Russia's far larger and more advanced military. Benjamin Jensen, a war-strategy expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, describes this crowdfunding as a "game changer." Before the war, Ruslan Kulyk was a pastry chef who made wedding cakes in Spain, where the family immigrated when Diana was young.

I don't have a dryer or a microwave, and I've adapted to a new way of living. AdvertisementFive years ago, I booked a one-way ticket from the US to Morocco with no idea of what to expect. I was surprised at how much I learned about living in my time in Meknes, where I now live. AdvertisementWhen I began asking friends questions when I needed to fix or buy something in Morocco, I learned that repair and secondhand shops are everywhere. Although I still sometimes feel the shift in cultural values between what I grew up with in the US and what I've experienced during my time in Morocco, I've learned what it truly means to live in a community here.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and his senior aides are discussing the idea of issuing preemptive pardons for those whom President-elect Donald Trump has scorned in recent years as he has hinted about plans for retribution, two sources familiar with the discussions confirmed. Some Democrats and “Never Trump” Republicans have supported the notion of preemptive pardons to protect people under a new Trump presidency. Previous presidents have issued such pardons, including George H.W. Back in the Biden White House, there is work being done on the president’s use of clemency authority on criminal justice cases. Advocates, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are encouraging the president to act on a variety of cases they say are worthy of clemency.

That won't happen for another 45 days, but Donald Trump, the president-in-waiting, isn't shying away from acting like the president-in-reality. This weekend, Trump will join French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral five years after it was devastated by fire. “Given the weakness of the current president and the speed at which things develop in the modern world, Trump is, in effect, a presumptive president,” said Newt Gingrich, a Republican former House speaker and a Trump ally. Nearly 100 former national security officials signed a letter criticizing President-elect Donald Trump's decision to nominate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and called for closed-door Senate hearings to review any government information about her. In the letter obtained by NBC News, the officials urged the Senate to "carefully evaluate" whether Gabbard is "equipped" for the position, which requires Senate confirmation. "Following her trip to Syria, for example, Ms. Gabbard aligned herself with Russian and Syrian officials." The former officials also proposed closed-door hearings that would allow lawmakers to fully review any government files on Gabbard, a former Democratic House member from Hawaii. Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team slammed the letter, as well as the signers' credentials.

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a law requiring China-based ByteDance to sell TikTok or face an effective ban in the United States. If ByteDance fails to sell TikTok by Jan. 19, the law would require app store companies, like Apple and Google, and internet hosting providers to stop supporting TikTok, effectively banning the app. "On the merits, we reject each of the petitioners' constitutional claims," the appeals court panel said in its opinion on the decision Friday. President-elect Donald Trump has not yet said whether his administration will enforce the ban when he takes office next month. In a September post on Truth Social, Trump said he wasn't "doing anything with TikTok, but the other side is going to close it up, so if you like TikTok, go out and vote for Trump."
