Transgender cricketer retires after ICC ruling
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The International Cricket Council (ICC)'s decision, made at a board meeting on Tuesday, follows similar rulings over the last couple of years by the global chiefs of swimming, rugby union, cycling and athletics. "Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women's game and the safety of players." Critics of transgender inclusion in women's sport say going through male puberty imbues athletes with a huge musculo-skeletal advantage that transition does not mitigate. The ICC said the ruling, which followed a nine-month consultation process and applies only to international cricket, would be reviewed after two years. Australian-born McGahey, who has played international cricket for Canada for more than a year, said the campaign for transgender inclusion in women's sport would continue.

  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BENGALURU, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A record 1.25 million fans attended matches during the 13th edition of the World Cup, which concluded on Sunday with Australia beating hosts India for their sixth title, global body the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday. A total of 1,250,307 fans watched the Oct. 5-Nov. 19 showpiece event from the stands, surpassing the previous mark of 1.016 million set at the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand. While the early matches not involving runners-up India had plenty of empty seats in venues, overall spectator figures had already surpassed the one million mark with six games to go. ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said the one-day international (ODI) tournament had been a "great success." "It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport."

It was a remarkable journey for Australia, who began their campaign with back-to-back defeats yet still finished with the 50-overs World Cup in their arms for the sixth time. Shakib had already caused controversy over his appeal that led to Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in international cricket to be 'timed-out'. Cummins, for one, had no doubts about the stature of the original World Cup. "I think it's the pinnacle of international cricket," said Cummins, who was part of Australia's victorious 2015 squad. AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — Australia won the Cricket World Cup for a record-extending sixth time Sunday, ending India’s dominant run in its home tournament with a six-wicket victory in a low-scoring final on the back of Travis Head’s 137. A heavily pro-Indian crowd inside the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium was silenced as Head combined with Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out ) in a 192-run partnership to chase down the target of 241. Head was dismissed off what proved to be the next-to-last ball of the match, caught in the deep while attempting to hit a title-clinching boundary. In came Glenn Maxwell and he ran two off his first ball, securing a victory that prompted fireworks above the world’s largest cricket venue. Australia finished the tournament with a run of nine straight wins, after starting with back-to-back defeats to India and South Africa.

The stage was amply set: an acrobatic air show by Indian military planes, performances by star Bollywood singers, a light display, lots of fireworks and — talked about as the highlight — an appearance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the vast stadium that bears his name. All India’s national cricket team, undefeated and heavily favored, had to do was win. In the end, the Indians fell short, losing to Australia on Sunday night in the men’s World Cup, silencing the home crowd of about 100,000 and bringing heartache to more than a billion Indians who have grown used this year to unending validation of their country’s global rise. The result was a bitter pill for a nation that expected a coronation as the most dominant force, measured in passion and money, in a sport that by some estimates is the world’s second most popular. It seemed to symbolize how far India has come, on and off the field, and how far it still has to go.

Initially, Kohli was part of batting's "Fab Four" alongside England's Joe Root, Australia's Steve Smith and New Zealand's Kane Williamson. While others have faded somewhat recently, Kohli has been burning brightly, and pulling ahead of his peers. The elegant right-hander ended that drought in September last year and has been at his prolific best at the current World Cup, where he is the runaway top-scorer with 711 runs from 10 matches including three centuries. "And to do it on the biggest stage - in the World Cup Semi-final - and at my home ground is the icing on the cake." Congratulations emperor," the bowling great wrote after Kohli's Mumbai masterclass.

Poor starts with the bat and ball cost the side in their tense three wicket defeat to old foes Australia on Thursday – the fifth time they have exited a World Cup in the semi-finals. South Africa will co-host the next 50-over finals with Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2027 and Walter believes there is much room for optimism they can improve further having arrived in India under the radar and with little expectation of success. The majority of the people that are going to be on the journey (to the next World Cup) are still in the changing room. Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn, who lost in the semi-finals in 2015, also believes there is cause for optimism. "If you look at the stats overall, South Africa will walk away and say they ticked all the boxes they wanted to, but they just didn’t get over the line," he told CricInfo.

India arrived at the Wankhede Stadium, where they lifted their second and last World Cup trophy in 2011, looking invincible, winning all nine round-robin matches without any stiff challenge, including a four-wicket win over New Zealand. India had also exited the 2015 edition of the 50-over World Cup at the semi-final stage with a defeat to Australia. "Today being the semi-finals, I wouldn't say that there was no pressure," India captain Rohit Sharma told host broadcaster Star Sports, adding that the team wanted to treat the match as just another round-robin game. KOLKATA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - South Africa coach Rob Walter is "incredibly proud" of the team's fight despite their semi-final loss against Australia at the 50-overs World Cup and does not think the "choker" tag applies to them. South Africa could not progress beyond the last four of the showpiece event again but they played impressive cricket to finish the group stage as the second-placed team. While a combination of bad luck and nerves stymied them in previous World Cups, South Africa fought tooth and nail this time defending a small total before Australia eked out a narrow three-wicket win. Australia got off to a flyer but South Africa kept taking wickets regularly to inject fresh drama into the contest and their lion-hearted bowlers simply refused to throw in the towel. For me, a choke is losing a game that you're in a position to win," the coach said.
