CNN —Week 1 of the new NFL season is in books and there are no shortage of talking points. This year’s influx of rookies made their first steps in the NFL over the weekend with varying success. Most notably was the serious-looking injury suffered by Aaron Rodgers on his New York Jets debut on Monday Night Football. It is the second serious injury Dobbins has suffered in his short NFL career after he tore his ACL, ruling him out of the 2021 season entirely. Matt Durisko/APAlso, can Zach Wilson – who was relegated to the Jets’ bench after Rodgers’ arrival – maintain a playoff push?

off-season has gotten shorter since the regular season was extended to 17 games, and it certainly feels shorter, too, given that once-mundane calendar entries, such as the start of off-season workouts, are now treated like red-carpet events. Yet the down time between last season and this one is still long enough that impactful free-agent signings, un-retirements and rules changes made months ago have receded to the background. happenings to keep in mind as the regular season begins in earnest on Sunday. Eight months after Hamlin, a Buffalo Bills safety, went into cardiac arrest during a “Monday Night Football” game, he made the team’s 53-man roster and will backup starters Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in the NFL on Thursday, agreeing to a five-year, $275 million contract extension, according to a person familiar with the deal. The market for quarterbacks was set for Burrow in late July when Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million extension. Herbert’s total value and $52.5 million average per season surpassed the $260 million, five-year extension ($52 million average) that Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson signed in April. Deshaun Watson agreed to a fully guaranteed $230 million deal with Cleveland in 2022. Bengals owner Mike Brown said a year ago that the team had begun restructuring finances in order secure a long-term deal for Burrow.

And because of what he now knows about football injuries, NFL players don’t seem so superhuman anymore. And as another NFL season kicks off this week, these questions haven’t gone away. Long-term degenerative brain diseases such as CTE and Parkinson’s have become huge concerns for football players and their families. “This is one reason why NFL fans can cheer for the most violent-looking tackles imaginable – because they are allowed in the game. “Football fans are like, ‘I love the physicality, but I’m certainly not going to put my child into that,” Wann says.

But she was taken aback by the extent to which middle-aged women like O'Neill reported experiencing age-related discrimination at work. "When men get to their 40s or 50s, they're considered to be in the prime of their careers," Diehl told me. In one 2019 poll of 400 US workers ages 40 and older, more men than women reported experiencing or witnessing age discrimination on the job. Research has also found that older job seekers face age discrimination regardless of gender, despite a 56-year-old federal law that purportedly protects against older-age discrimination in employment. It's undeniable that workplace age discrimination occurs across gender lines, but the qualitative experiences surfaced by Diehl, Stephenson, and Dzubinski help paint a picture of how an open culture around age discrimination can ultimately end up fueling good, old-fashioned sexism.

CNN —Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was named the 2023 George Halas Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America on Monday. CPR was performed on Hamlin when he lost his pulse and needed to be revived through resuscitation and defibrillation. In April, Hamlin was cleared to resume football activities after his cardiac arrest was caused by commotio cordis, which can occur when severe trauma to the chest disrupts the heart’s electrical charge and causes dangerous fibrillations. The 25-year-old was cleared to resume football activities last month and said he has been planning to make a comeback to the NFL. “This event was life-changing, but it’s not the end of my story,” Hamlin said in a news conference two months ago.

Some 113 million viewers watched the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, according to preliminary data from Nielsen and Adobe Analytics, which they said made it the third most-watched television show of all time. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is celebrating his latest win with his wife Brittany. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Patrick in the first round of the NFL Draft in April 2017. Her team won its league in September 2017, according to her Instagram, and by October 2017 she was in Kansas City. I think the people are what we love the most about Kansas City," Mahomes said. He took the Chiefs to their second-consecutive Super Bowl in February 2021, though the team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Instead, he was grilled about the league's painfully slow progress when it comes to inclusion and diversity, particularly among head coaches. During last year's pre-game address, Goodell acknowledged that the NFL had fallen short when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Another persistent headache for the NFL are concussions, which jumped 18% during the 2022 regular season after three years of decline. The league came under intense criticism for its response to a concussion suffered by Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in September. "Anytime we can change the protocols to make it safer for our players we're going to do that," assured Goodell.
