Israeli fighter jets targeted the headquarters of the militant group, located in an area of the capital’s southern suburbs known as Dahiyeh, the Israeli military said in a statement on Saturday. Israeli strikes razed buildings to rubble, and killed at least six people, according to the country’s health ministry. The IDF said it was targeting what it alleges are buildings used by Hezbollah as command centers, weapons productions and storage sites. Hezbollah has denied that its weapons are being stored in civilian buildings targeted by Israeli strikes.

Tens of thousands of people fled southern Lebanon on Tuesday as Israel intensified an aerial assault that inflicted the country's deadliest day since war nearly two decades ago, while Hezbollah launched a new barrage of cross-border fire. Nearly 500 people were killed in Lebanon on Monday, according to local health officials, marking the deadliest Israeli bombardment of the country since Israel's 34-day war with Hezbollah in 2006. Scenes of families fleeing southern Lebanon and of fiery explosions filling the skyline fueled global fears of an all-out regional conflict. However, in a briefing Monday, an Israeli military official said a halt in fire from Hezbollah would not be enough to end Israel’s strikes on Lebanon.

Israel’s aerial bombardment killed nearly 500 people, including at least 35 children and 58 women, according to Lebanese authorities. That’s nearly half the number killed throughout the entire 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. Lebanese civilians know all too well how frightening the Israeli military’s attempts to target Hezbollah can be. On Friday, Israeli jets carried out an airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs, in which they killed several senior Hezbollah commanders. But the missiles also destroyed a nine-story building in a densely populated neighborhood, killing 45 people, including women and children.
