REUTERS/Rupam Jain/File PhotoGURUGRAM, India, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Over 3,000 poor Muslims have fled a business hub outside New Delhi this month, fearing for their lives after Hindu-Muslim clashes and sporadic attacks targeting them, residents, police and a community group said. The Gurugram president of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind (Council of Indian Muslim Theologians) Mufti Mohammed Salim estimated that more than 3,000 Muslims had left the district after the violence. "Many Muslims decided it's best to leave for a while," said Sheikh, adding that some Hindu owners of shops rented out to Muslims wanted them to vacate. "No one is asking them to leave and we are providing full security in all communally sensitive areas," he told Reuters. Make it a cool pickle summer with this easy method
  + stars: | 2023-08-05 | by ( Casey Barber | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Sure, you can preserve food with a more advanced water-bath canning method, especially if you’re planning to save your summer pickles for up to a year. Or add pickled vegetables such as green beans or cauliflower to a grain salad or grain bowl as a topping. While pickled vegetables are always welcome in pasta salad (and potato salad, for that matter), they also bring an unexpected zing to hot pasta recipes. Or add pickled shallots, broccoli or peppers to pesto-sauced noodles. And when it’s too hot to think of anything else to do, there’s always “snack dinner” with a variety of pickled vegetables to save the day.

Miami-Dade County's population shrank between 2019 and 2022 — its first population loss since 1970. Between 2020 and 2022, almost 80,000 people left Miami-Dade county for other areas. Despite Florida's boom, which helped it become the fastest-growing state between 2021 and 2022, Miami-Dade County has been losing more residents than it's been gaining in recent years. Home prices in Miami have surged 53% since June 2020, the Journal reported, citing data from Zillow. The median home value for Miami-Dade County as a whole is now close to $490,000, up around 7% over the past year, according to Zillow.

The counters on the River Thames recorded 94 cygnets, as young swans are called, compared to 155 last year. Mr. Barber said he didn’t expect this year’s count to be quite as low as it was, and that the numbers were the most disappointing in years, Mr. Barber said. He added that 2009 was a worse year, when the uppers counted 84 young swans. The count was 166 cygnets in 2021 and 147 cygnets in 2019, he added. But there was also good news: Even though the number of cygnets was low, they were all in excellent health, Mr. Barber said.

Charles Barber’s “In the Blood” treats a consequential topic, and contains moments of real insight, drama and humor. Trouble is, Barber opens with several omissions and slights that left me on edge for the balance of the book. Barber begins his story about catastrophic bleeding and the urgent search for a cure, appropriately enough, in the savage battle for Mogadishu in 1993. More glaringly, the Army Rangers described on the raid actually played a supporting role to commandos from Delta Force, which Barber never mentions. Yet I wanted to trust this book, because it tells an important story in vivid, engrossing terms.

July 21 (Reuters) - Alabama executed a man early on Friday for beating an elderly woman to death two decades ago, the state's first execution since Governor Kay Ivey lifted a suspension on capital punishment in February following a review. Barber argued to the United States Court of Appeals that his execution should be halted because he is at substantial risk of serious harm and "torture" under current protocols. Legal and ethical questions have swirled around capital punishment in the United States after several lethal injections have been botched in recent years. The number of executions in the United States has drastically fallen since 1999, when a record 98 executions were carried out. Capital punishment was reinstated in the United States in 1976.

Foreclosures jumped 13% year-over-year in the first half of 2023, real estate data firm ATTOM reported. However, foreclosure activity in the second quarter was still 65% below pre-recessionary averages. This is the highest January-to-June foreclosure activity since 2019, outpacing the 165,530 filings that occurred in the first half of 2020, when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. "Although overall foreclosure activity remains below historical norms, the notable surge in foreclosure starts indicates that we may continue to see a rise in foreclosure activity in the coming years," ATTOM CEO Rob Barber said in the recent report. According to ATTOM, foreclosure activity in the second quarter was 65% below the 278,912 averages of the pre-recessionary years.

CNN —Although the so-called “girl dinner” is being popularized by young women promoting throw-together meals on TikTok, it’s in fact an inclusive meal. I’m a middle-aged girl, and this is the style of meal I’ve been calling “snack dinner” for years. The original “girl dinner” TikTok video, posted by Olivia Maher, featured a countertop spread of grapes, cornichons, bread and cheese. There are really no rules for preparing the perfect "girl dinner" — start with your favorite snack elements and expand from there. Your solo snack plate dinner doesn’t have to include bread, cheese or charcuterie if that’s not your personal preference.

Etiquette experts such as Thomas Farley — also known as Mister Manners — are calling the phenomenon "tipflation." And on top of that, you're being asked, every time you turn around, 'How much would you like to tip?' ProfessionalsAs a blanket rule, you don't need to tip anyone who earns a salary or performs a trade. "It's a nice gesture to offer a tip to a worker who goes above and beyond the service," Swann says. "From an etiquette standpoint, we still tip the servers who are bringing us our food," he says.

Start with a few key itemsAs with an indoor kitchen, you’ll need a few crucial tools to make your outdoor cooking expeditions a success. Metal cutlery are staples of outdoor cooking. Simple to prepare in advance, foil packets are among the easiest meals for a campfire cooking newbie to whip up. For skillet cooking, you can experiment with some of your usual one-pan meals transferred to the outdoors. One note: High-sided stainless steel firepits, such as Solo Stoves, aren’t the best option for cooking in coals.

The return of perms
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( Yola Mzizi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Perms, or the permanent wave, have been a fixture of American culture since the late 19th century and reached peak popularity in the 1970s and 1980s. While beauty trends, like fashion, are cyclical, perms today differ greatly from those once seen on stars like Cher and Stevie Nicks, thanks to gentler products and digitized heat technology. Digital perms, or hot perms, have also become popular. “It certainly helps that K-Pop and K-Dramas are popular and the stars get perms, so that has made it more culturally acceptable,” said Chen. Wella’s Munz is hopeful the resurgence of perms will also encourage brands to further engage with the multicultural consumer.

My father said it was indeed a general store, supplying everything from hog feed to eggs to coal for heating. On the map, I believe General’s Store is the building at the bottom and labeled S for store. Black people appeared chiefly in sketches aimed at amusing readers – or when they were accused of crimes against whites. The letter writer said a young white man in a general store had ordered the woman to put down a can of oil she was examining. I could find nothing that accounted for the death of General Bryson, let alone any item that mentioned the Bryson family.
