He had asked Sanchez, a Socialist, in a meeting earlier on Wednesday to back him in exchange for policy pacts. "Unfortunately, what I have obtained, as far as I understood, is a no," Feijoo told reporters after the meeting. Sanchez did not talk to the media, but his Socialist party's spokesperson Pilar Alegria confirmed to reporters the party will not support Feijoo's premiership bid. In a written document handed to Sanchez, the conservative candidate to premiership had said the two-year government would be extended if both parties agreed. On Aug. 17, Sanchez's Socialists party managed to secure 178 votes with support from left-wing and regionalist parties to get its candidate elected as speaker.

MADRID, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Spanish regional soccer chiefs demanded federation boss Luis Rubiales resign for grabbing and kissing World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso, as the country's caretaker government promised on Tuesday to ensure women play a bigger role in running sports. Prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into whether Rubiales might have committed an act of sexual aggression when he grabbed Hermoso and kissed her on the lips after Spain's victory in the women's World Cup in Sydney on Aug. 20. Many of the federation representatives had initially applauded Rubiales when he announced on Friday he would not quit. "Following recent events and the unacceptable behaviour that has seriously damaged Spanish football's image, the (regional) presidents demand that Luis Rubiales immediately resign," they said in a statement. Acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz demanded the dismissal of the head coaches of both the men's and women's national teams.

The prosecutor at the Spanish High Court, which has jurisdiction as the soccer final was abroad, has received several complaints alleging possible sexual aggression. The High Court prosecutor said on Monday the office would contact Hermoso to ask her if she wants to formalise a criminal complaint. World soccer governing body FIFA suspended Rubiales from all football-related activities for three months with immediate effect on Saturday. The Spanish government has strongly condemned Rubiales' actions but can not directly suspend or remove Rubiales from his post as president of the Spanish Royal Football Federation (RFEF), which is a private institution. Although Rubiales is already suspended, Spain's CSD said it would move ahead with its own case regardless.

According to EFE, Bejar stayed inside the parish church of Divina Pastora in Rubiales' hometown in southern Spain, Motril, with her sister after the parish priest left. She asked Hermoso to tell the truth and "stick to the version she gave at the beginning", EFE added. Speaking at an RFEF emergency assembly on Friday, Rubiales complained that "false feminists" were "trying to kill me". He described the kiss as a "little peck" that was "spontaneous, mutual, euphoric and consensual". Rubiales, 46, said in his speech that Hermoso was the one who initiated physical contact by lifting him off the ground by his hips. Criticism of Rubiales's behaviour has built throughout the week of the incident which occurred while the players were being handed their medals after they beat England 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday. As players filed past, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head and planted a kiss on her mouth.

The ECB is due to decide in October whether to push ahead with a digital euro, which aims to tackle a shortage of European payment service providers. A digital euro would provide a payment solution based on European infrastructure and accepted throughout the entire euro area, she said. Electronic payments in the EU grew from 184.2 trillion euros ($201.7 trillion) in 2017 to 240 trillion euros in 2021, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

BRICS bank can help African countries tackle urgent challenges

Aug 24 (Reuters) - The New Development Bank created by BRICS countries in 2015 can help finance African countries' projects to tackle their most urgent challenges, the bank's president Dilma Rousseff said on Thursday. The BRICS countries are "good partners" for Africa, former Brazilian President Rousseff said in a speech in Johannesburg, adding the bank would finance physical and digital infrastructure projects in Africa as well as educational ones. "The New Development Bank has the potential to be the leader of projects that address the most urgent challenges of African countries," she said, pointing out that although Africa's share of foreign direct investment (FDI) rose to 8.8% of global FDI in 2021 from just 4.9% in 2010 it "can and must rise much more". Rousseff also pointed to the need for joint infrastructure projects between several countries, noting that Africa has the world's greatest untapped hydroelectric potential. Spanish king nominates conservative Feijoo for premiership bid

MADRID, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Spain's King Felipe on Tuesday nominated the leader of the conservative People's Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, to face a parliamentary vote for prime minister, according to lower house speaker Francina Armengol. No single party or bloc earned an outright majority of seats in the snap general election. Earlier on Tuesday, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that he believed his Socialist party would be able "to gather the parliamentary support needed" to form a government. Her appointment was seen as a nod to smaller regional parties, whose support Sanchez would need in a potential bid should Feijoo fail. If no candidate secures a majority within two months of the first vote, new elections have to be called.
