In today's big story, we're looking at why reports of more potential trade restrictions have chip companies on their heels . Trade restrictions are certainly real concerns for chip companies. AdvertisementThe supply-chain base for most of the chip industry is in Taiwan, specifically TSMC. Politicians and regulators have no interest in making American AI companies less competitive and demand is still extremely high. With so much geopolitical tension, is it possible the chip industry becomes more regionalized?

Nvidia's rise came after TSMC said on Thursday that demand remains high and supply remains constrained for high-end AI chips, which TSMC manufactures for Nvidia. Today, the demand is so high I had to work very hard to meet customer demand," Wei told analysts. On Wednesday, the semiconductor sector had its worst day since 2020, with big drops from AMD , Arm , Broadcom and Qualcomm alongside Nvidia. A Chinese invasion would throw Nvidia's chip supply into question. Nvidia stock is up more than 150% so far in 2024.

Global chip stocks fell sharply, with ASML , Nvidia and TSMC posting declines amid reports of tighter export restrictions from the U.S. and a ramp-up of geopolitical tensions fueled by comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump. ASML's Netherlands-listed shares were down 11%, while Tokyo Electron shares in Japan closed nearly 7.5% lower. The moves came after Bloomberg on Wednesday reported that the Biden administration is considering a wide-sweeping rule to clamp down on companies exporting their critical chipmaking equipment to China. Washington's foreign direct product rule, or FDPR, allows the U.S. to put controls on foreign-made products even if they use the smallest amount of American technology. Few would envy the task of competing against market leader Nvidia, which has between 70% and 90% market share, according to Mizuho Securities. Still, Nvidia gets most of the hype — and the revenue. Though the company will not confirm it, The Information reported last month that Cerebras has confidentially filed for an IPO. Still, Feldman expects that even consumer-directed AI models will grow larger, and larger models need faster chips. Competing with that mindshare is an uphill battle as Nvidia faces more competition and goes on defense.
