Defending champion Alcaraz, 20, won his second major at the All England Club in July and said it would be "great" to play three-time U.S. Open winner Djokovic in the showpiece. "It would be great to play a final against Novak here in New York but we both have really tough semi-finals," Alcaraz said. "Last year I was facing my first semi-final of a Grand Slam. In-form Djokovic, 36, will replace Alcaraz as world number one after the tournament and is on the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time singles record. Now in his first Grand Slam semi-final in only his fifth appearance at majors, Shelton is up for the daunting challenge of squaring off against Djokovic.

CNN —Novak Djokovic cruised through to the US Open final after a dominant 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win against American youngster Ben Shelton. Shelton, playing in his first ever grand slam semifinal, came out all guns blazing but was unable to lay much of a glove on the ever-impressive Djokovic. Being two sets down against Djokovic is a place where no tennis player wants to be and, despite being behind, Shelton will be proud of his efforts in the final set. For Djokvoic, he has now made it to a record-equaling 10th US Open final and he will be looking to win his fourth title at Flushing Meadows in Sunday’s final. He also has the chance to make history and level Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam singles titles.

CNN —Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form at the US Open with a dominant 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory against Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. “I think they are at a level of their own at the moment,” Zverev told reporters after facing the Spaniard. The 20-year-old started to assert his superiority from there, breaking Zverev twice in the second set and at 4-4 in the third. “It’s difficult to even compete if you don’t have that.”A year after claiming his first grand slam title, Alcaraz will now contest his fourth major semifinal. “I think I’m more mature now,” he said when asked how he has changed over the past 12 months.

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic considers his mental state just as important as his physical condition when it comes to being prepared to play his best at age 36. “There’s a lot of players that never figured that out during their career. I feel strong.”Professional athletes offering frank thoughts on mental health is still a relatively recent development. “For quite a few years, actually, mental training was not really talked about much, generally, in the tennis world. "Because in the end of the day, we are also people that have to deal with the private issues that everyone has.”The ways players try to cope differs.

"I remember the last time I played him in Madrid," Alcaraz said of the clash in May when Zverev lost tamely. "He was struggling a lot, working really hard to come back at his best and finally we all see him showing his best tennis." Zverev, with his booming serve finding the mark, was able to keep pace with Alcaraz through the early part of the first set. But I try to make the people enjoy watching tennis," Alcaraz said. Another break to get in front 5-2 and a hold left Alcaraz with a big smile and Zverev calling for a medical time out.

CNN —Daniil Medvedev beat compatriot Andrey Rublev to reach the US Open semifinals on Wednesday, but warned that a player might “die” in what he called “brutal” conditions at the tournament. Medvedev triumphed over Rublev in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-4, but both players could be seen struggling with the heat inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Al Bello/Getty ImagesAfter the victory, Medvedev called the conditions “brutal” and explained that he couldn’t see the ball by the end of the first set. “The only good thing I see in these conditions is that both suffer,” Medvedev said during his on-court interview. I played with sensations.”“I tried to go for it, tried to run and he did the same.

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a hint of a predicament 35 minutes into his U.S. Open quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday night. At 3-all in the first set under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Zverev earned the first break points of the match. One more service hold arrived and, just like that, the set belonged to Alcaraz, as did, eventually, a spot in the semifinals. On Wednesday, he saved all five break points he faced and converted each of the four he earned in Zverev's service games. With Alcaraz serving at 3-3 in the early going, it was Zverev who buckled, missing a backhand on each of his break points.

I thought I had seen it all on a tennis court until I watched Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open on Monday. No, I’m not talking about the speed and punch of his forehand. I’m talking about his audacious creativity: As Alcaraz worked his way into the net early in the match, Matteo Arnaldi lifted a lob over the Spaniard’s head. Alcaraz is not most pros. Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 winner, overcame brutal heat and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-3 6-4 to set up a Friday meeting with defending champion Alcaraz. By the time Alcaraz and Zverev appeared on Arthur Ashe for the late match much of the sting had been taken out of the brutal conditions that Medvedev and Rublev faced. German Zverev, a U.S. Open finalist in 2020, showed up ready to fight but after some initial resistance the tank emptied and it was a straightforward win for Alcaraz in the end. "I'm feeling really comfortable playing in this court, playing here in New York," said Alcaraz.

One of the great misconceptions about most professional tennis players is that they watch a lot of tennis. The truth is that between their packed schedules of practice, recovery, and eating vast quantities of pasta, the only full matches many of them will pay attention to are the ones that they happen to be playing in.

CNN —A fan was ejected from a match at the US Open on Monday, organizers said, after German player Alexander Zverev complained about hearing the individual use a since-removed phrase from the German national anthem, which Germany reinterpreted as a call for Nazi superiority during World War II. During the fourth set of his fourth-round match against Italy’s Jannik Sinner in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Zverev approached umpire James Keothavong to protest about the fan’s behavior. “He just said the most famous Hitler phrase there is in this world, it’s unacceptable,” Zverev said on-court at the time. CNN —Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the US Open semifinals with an emphatic victory over American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday. Victory ensured that Djokovic’s hopes of winning a 24th grand slam title remain alive, as he seeks to equal Margaret Court’s outright record and extend his own men’s record. I thrive on that energy, whatever the energy is, use it as a fuel to try and play my best tennis,” Djokovic added. Fritz, who is enjoying his best run at his home grand slam, continued to grow into the game and gave Djokovic a stern test in the third set. The American earned multiple break points against the 36-year-old, but Djokovic continued to produce in the most important moments to stay ahead.

For the first time since 2005, three Americans have progressed to the quarterfinals of the men’s draw. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are the trio still harboring dreams of winning a home grand slam. Tiafoe and Shelton will play each other on Tuesday, while Fritz has a rather tricky tie against 23-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic on the same day. I’m not going to do anything different because I’m playing Novak,” he told reporters after reaching the quarterfinal. “He’s going to come after me, and I’m going to come after him.

U.S. Open quarters would be a pretty good time to get him." In their most recent meeting, Djokovic beat Fritz last month in the quarter-finals of a U.S. Open tune-up event in Cincinnati that the Serbian went on to win by beating Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz moved through the first set like a freight train, winning the first four games, and the 26th-seeded Evans failed to convert any of his three break points in the eighth game. Evans did let out a roar as he broke Alcaraz with an unreturnable backhand down the line in the second game of the second set but the Spaniard broke back immediately and the Briton helped his opponent to another break in the fifth. Alcaraz broke Evans again with a well-executed drop shot to close out the second set. However, Evans upped his level in the third set, channeling his frustration into a superb game seven where he broke with a backhand winner.
