A brush fire broke out Friday night in Prospect Park, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, amid a drought that has been plaguing the northeastern U.S. for weeks. The New York City Fire Department posted about the fire on X at around 8 p.m. and said "operations are ongoing." On Thursday, "temperatures soared to well above normal readings," the National Weather Service office in New York said. The entire New York City region was under a red flag warning Friday, the weather service said, with wind gusts up to 30 mph possible. A social media influencer known for drag-racing videos died in a car crash early Wednesday on a New York City expressway. Beadle, who amassed 246,000 Instagram followers and nearly 60,000 YouTube followers, had recently posted videos showing off the power of a BMW M240. A caption for the video read: “It’s just a bmw.”In a video posted this week on YouTube, what appears to be the same purple BMW is seen racing from multiple angles. In one nighttime video, a group of men is seen blocking traffic on a highway and slicking the roadway to prepare for the race. It was not clear if the BMW in the social media posts was the same vehicle involved in the deadly crash.

Authorities on Tuesday announced they are investigating the death of a 1-month-old baby boy who was brought to a New York hospital over the summer for malnutrition as a homicide. Officers were called to the hospital and informed by staff that the baby was "unconscious and unresponsive," the New York City Police Department said in a statement. In an update Tuesday, police said the Office of Chief Medical Examiner deemed the death a homicide. The New York Times reported that the baby died of malnutrition. The New York City Administration for Children’s Services said state confidentiality laws prohibit it from sharing certain details.

A masked bandit sent Spirit Airlines passengers scurrying at LaGuardia Airport in New York City on Monday, when a raccoon was spotted busting through a ceiling tile. Video shows the raccoon dangling from a cord from inside a ceiling tile next to the Spirit Airlines counter. As screams filled the budget airline’s terminal, another video showed someone was carrying what seemed to be a trash can in an effort to catch the raccoon.
