No one on the set of “Yellowstone” could figure out why the show was paying a horse wrangler who was more than 1,600 miles away. It was May 2022, and the Paramount Network blockbuster western was gearing up for a fifth season that was, by all accounts, expected to be another hit—both for its all-powerful creator, Taylor Sheridan, and Paramount Global , the media conglomerate bankrolling his operation.
The current season of “Yellowstone,” the Western starring Kevin Costner that became one of the most popular shows on television, will be its last, Paramount announced Friday. The series, which airs on the Paramount Network, will be followed by a new “Yellowstone” sequel — created, like the original, by Taylor Sheridan — that will start in December, Paramount said. The sequel will air on the Paramount Network, a cable channel, and later on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Its Season 4 finale was the most-watched scripted program in 2022, Variety reported, with more than 13 million viewers. And the Season 5 premiere last November exceeded that with more than 17 million viewers, according to Paramount.
[1/3] Writers Guild of America members and supporters picket outside Sunset Bronson Studios and Netflix Studios, after union negotiators called a strike for film and television writers, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., May 3, 2023. REUTERS/Mario AnzuoniLOS ANGELES, May 4 (Reuters) - The group representing Hollywood studios fired back on Thursday at claims from striking film and television workers that they have been forced into the "gig economy" because of changes brought by the streaming TV era. Roughly 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike on Tuesday, saying that studios had "created a gig economy inside a union workforce." Most TV writers, the group said, are employed on a weekly orepisodic basis, with a guarantee of a specified number of weeks or episodes. Writers say they are working more and making less as studios have shifted their focus to streaming over traditional TV and cable.
CNN —Kevin Costner and his wife of over 18 years Christine Baumgartner have announced they are going their separate ways. The pair initially met on a golf course, and years later reconnected at a restaurant opening. Costner and Baumgartner share three children, and Costner also has four other children from previous relationships, including with his first wife Cindy Silva, to whom he was married from 1978 to 1994. In February, one month after Costner won a Golden Globe for his performance on “Yellowstone,” he made reference to his wife on social media, who helped celebrate his achievement when they were unable to attend the awards event due to flooding near their home. “We watched from home and it wasn’t the same,” Costner said in a video as he recounted what it was like to watch the show remotely.
“In Canada we have way more wolves. But in Saskatchewan, where I live, the land is so flat and the timber is so dense that you rarely see them. You’re lucky if you see two wolves a year,” he says. “I come down here and I can see 15 a day, easily.”
PRAY, Mont. — By the edge of a steep, snow-dusted gully just north of Yellowstone National Park, Alec Baldwin and the crew of the western “Rust” gathered for their morning safety meeting as filming resumed a year and a half after it had been halted by tragedy. It was anything but routine. “I’ve said it, and I’m going to say it every single time: There are no weapons on set,” Gerard DiNardi, the film’s new first assistant director, reassured the crew on Friday. There are a lot of facsimiles of weapons, from rubber to replicas.”The movie’s new armorer, Andrew Wert, who handles all weapons and ammunition on set, added that even the dummy rounds — the inert cartridges that are used in movies to resemble real ammunition — were made of rubber and wood, and painted gold.

In cities both small and large, some locals are calling out short-term rentals for making housing more expensive. The same question is perplexing local governments and fueling impassioned locals to weigh in: What should we do about Airbnb-style, short-term rentals? Jacob Boomsma/Getty ImagesFor Bozeman Tenants United, it's simple math: Bozeman homes should be occupied by Bozeman residents first, before out-of-towners. Formed in 2020, Bozeman Tenants United surveyed Bozeman residents on the most pressing issues in local housing and landed on short-term rentals. Fire Thunder said the increase of short-term rentals and vacation-owned properties is just one harbinger of a concerning trend.

April 19 (Reuters) - Production of the Western "Rust" will restart on Thursday in Montana, 18 months after actor Alec Baldwin fired a live round that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during filming in New Mexico. Filming will resume at Montana's Yellowstone Film Ranch set, according to Melina Spadone, a lawyer for Rust Movie Productions. Baldwin in October settled a lawsuit with the cinematographer's husband, Matt Hutchins, under which filming would restart with the same principal actors and the same director, Joel Souza, who was wounded in the 2021 shooting. Under the deal, Hutchins became an executive producer on the movie. Reporting By Andrew Hay; Editing by Sandra MalerOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

CNN —Filming of the movie “Rust” will resume this week. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Rust Movie Productions told CNN that principal photography of “Rust” is set to resume Thursday at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. Production on the western starring Alec Baldwin came to a halt in 2021, when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot when a prop gun Baldwin was holding fired a live round of ammunition during rehearsal. Baldwin and Souza will also return to finish the project, according to Rust Movie Productions. Baldwin and “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death in January.
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo.– It’s just after 6 a.m. when Rick McIntyre pulls into a turnout on the side of the road. The sun hasn’t yet risen over the mountains and the thermometer on his dashboard reads minus 11 degrees. He shakes a pair of air-activated hand warmers and aims a dark-green spotting scope at the hills. At the base of the hills is an elk carcass, and somewhere in the trees above it, a small pack of wolves. The wolf watchers have arrived.
In northwest Wyoming, in Teton County, is Jackson Hole, a valley located between the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges. It is known for its access to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Jackson Hole is home to several communities, including Jackson, a town of 10,760 people, according to census data, and Teton Village, the gateway to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The writers guild asked its members to authorize a strike, which would come at a risky time for Hollywood. Netflix, Amazon, and Disney have content stockpiles that could help them through a work stoppage. A Hollywood writers strike is looming at a precarious time for the media and entertainment industry. During that 100-day strike, more than 60 TV shows shut down and ratings and ad sales dropped. The landscape of entertainment options is "much more competitive than it was during the last writers strike," media consultant Peter Csathy told insider.
While Federal Reserve interest rate hikes may have slowed, the economic downturn they could have brought on is still possible, CNBC's Jim Cramer said on "Mad Money" on Monday. That's because the banking crisis that began with Silicon Valley Bank could very well "hasten the downturn that never seemed able to get off the ground," Cramer said. Rather, it'll show up in how consumers and small businesses alike are able to obtain credit, he said. And for travelers, it might mean Yellowstone instead of a bonanza overseas trip, Cramer said. But the consumer is most likely to feel the sting at home, at the dealership and when they're planning their vacations, he said.

Global News Changing Tides The first international agreement to protect the world's oceans aims to create “international parks” in the high seas. The high seas represent 95% of the world’s total habitat by volume, but the nautical world remains largely unexplored. “A sentiment we often encountered was that there’s not much in terms of biodiversity out there in the high seas,” he said. MPAs that already exist mostly occupy exclusive economic zones and only make up about 3% of the high seas. A 2016 Pew study on mapping governance in the high seas showed 19 governing bodies with a high seas mandate.

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Impact, a LinkedIn-like platform for Hollywood, recently raised $15 million. Hiring below-the-line crew members has largely been an offline process based on personal networks, Impact CEO Tyler Mitchell said. "We would have to find where the productions are, and more than anything, get people, whether they're independent films or other productions, using our products," he said. "I don't think there's a scenario where people will be using Impact to source 100 percent of a crew. The company has a database of 1.3 million people, including 30,000 crew members who are active users.
Paramount Global is considering selling a majority stake of BET Media Group, the owner of the BET cable network and studio, VH1, and the streaming service BET+, according to people familiar with the matter. While other assets at Paramount Global are closely intertwined with its flagship streaming service Paramount+, BET has its own streaming service, its own ad sales team, and an investment from actor and producer Tyler Perry. Selling a majority stake in BET Group would allow Paramount Global to get added capital to spend on programming for Paramount+ and Pluto TV, its free ad-supported streaming service. Paramount moved VH1 into BET Media Group in October. BET Media Group is run by BET CEO Scott Mills.
