AdvertisementRussia is considering deploying missiles in Asia if the US stations more systems there, a top official said. The remark hints at a potential for Russia to enter the fray in a region fraught with US-China tensions. Sergei Ryabkov, one of Russia's deputy foreign ministers, said on Monday that Moscow is considering deploying its short- to medium-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific. He had been asked by a reporter if Russia might station its missiles in Asian countries, according to the agency. Meanwhile, the US Army would respond by deploying long-range units from its Multi-Domain Task Force to the Philippines, per Kyodo News.

A permanent ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah is scheduled to begin Wednesday, following a yearlong conflict between the Jewish state and Iranian-backed groups. "Over the next 60 days, the Lebanese army and state security forces will deploy and take control of their own territory," said Biden. Earlier in the day Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address that he supported the ceasefire deal, which he sent to his Cabinet for approval. "The ceasefire allows us to focus on the Iranian threat," said Netanyahu. "We will complete the elimination of Hamas, the return of all the hostages and the return of the residents of the north."

Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong has become a center for money laundering and sanctions evasion under the tightening grip of Beijing, US lawmakers have warned, calling for a re-evaluation of America’s close business relationship with the Asian financial hub. “We must now question whether longstanding US policy towards Hong Kong, particularly towards its financial and banking sector, is appropriate,” they added. Rubio, a fierce critic of Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong, has sponsored legislation that sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong officials for alleged human rights violations in the city. This has massive implications for US businesses with big exposure to Hong Kong,” Fish said. “Sadly, the idea of Hong Kong as autonomous from China is now a farce … US companies need to understand that their Hong Kong operations will likely fall under increased scrutiny.”

Several new "matchmaking" dating apps have launched in the past year, addressing dating-app fatigue. Sitch, an AI-powered matchmaking app launched in New York in November. Three decades before he was tapped to lead the Treasury Department, Scott Bessent was asked to help break another country’s financial system. Then 29 years old, Mr. Bessent, working for the financier George Soros, helped “break” the Bank of England with crushing trades against the British pound. He was on a small team at Mr. Soros’s investment firm that, in 1992, amassed a $10 billion bet that the pound was overvalued. Mr. Soros’s fund earned more than $1 billion, along with credit (and infamy) for orchestrating one of Wall Street’s most audacious trades. When President-elect Donald J. Trump announced his selection of Mr. Bessent as Treasury secretary last week, there was no mention of the connection to Mr. Soros.

At the heart of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat on Monday to slap China with new tariffs is a bitterly recurring issue: the flow into the United States of the potent opioid fentanyl, created using chemicals made in China. In September, Chinese officials expanded the list of so-called precursor chemicals used in making the drug, imposing more oversight. It was a rare instance of cooperation from China, which has otherwise stonewalled the United States on issues including nuclear arms control, support for Russia and human rights. China is the main source of chemicals used to make fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that kills tens of thousands of Americans a year. Much of the flow into the United States is from drug cartels in Mexico who mix the precursors and smuggle the finished product across the border.

A record 31 million passengers are expected to fly US airlines over the course of this week, according to Airlines for America, the industry trade group. And while many airlines have increased the available number of flights and seats, those capacity increases have not kept pace with demand. With some of the busiest months yet to come, a new record for the percentage of seats airlines’ filled is within reach. Airlines are signaling prices will probably go higher as some of the lower-fare airlines struggled with ongoing losses and sharply reduced their capacity. But critics of the airlines say troubles at the lower fare airlines aren’t solely to blame for higher fares.

CNN —With a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire on the horizon, an 18-year-old United Nations resolution has resurfaced as a blueprint for ending the war. The 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the hope that it could form the basis of a lasting truce. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. Here’s what we know about the resolution and why it is critical to a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In 2000, the UN established the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” for Israeli forces from Lebanon.

Mr. Trump was indicted for aiding a possible coup and multiple other charges, including revealing classified documents to his supporters at Mar-a-Lago. Is that weaponizing our justice system, or allowing it to do its job, regardless of the consequences? Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president, was just charged with inciting Brazil’s attempted coup when he lost his re-election bid in 2022. It seems Brazil’s justice system is more capable of upholding its laws than ours is. I am now totally disgusted with my country and the judicial system over the Donald Trump legal fiasco.
