Alex Moffat, an actor and comedian best known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” rarely shouts at deer. But during a tense scene in the new crime comedy “Bad Monkey,” a Key deer, a member of an endangered species native to the Florida Keys, kept entering the frame. Not a lot of shows shoot in Florida — blame the lack of film infrastructure; blame the absence of tax breaks; blame the deer and the gnats and the 99 percent humidity. Even shows set in the state will typically shoot in North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana or, as in the case of Lawrence’s Florida-centric comedy “Cougar Town,” Los Angeles. He strongly preferred a Florida shoot, especially for the scenes set in the Keys.

This June and July, nights in Las Vegas stayed above 79 degrees for all but seven days. And hot nights are something more people are experiencing: No American major metro area has grown as much as Las Vegas has over the last three decades. Even after the sun set in Las Vegas in June and July, temperatures routinely remained in the 80s and 90s. Populations have doubled or more over a generation, with the number of abnormally hot nights rising at similar rates. Bitcoin has clawed back most of its weekly losses after an 11% rally late Thursday, but it is not out of the woods yet, according to chart analysts. "Bitcoin got nicely oversold after slicing through $53,000 [Monday], so a little relief is in order," Ron Ginsberg, a chart analyst at Wolfe Research, told CNBC. It now needs to hold that level on a consecutive weekly closing basis, Fairlead Strategies' Will Tamplin told CNBC. "Our intermediate-term metrics for bitcoin point lower, so we would look for a bounce to give way to a deeper pullback" to near $51,500, he said. "A cyclical uptrend remains in place for bitcoin, although long-term upside momentum behind the uptrend has slowed due to its corrective phase."

Members of the main U.S. transportation regulator grilled Boeing executives Wednesday over the company’s workplace safety culture and allegations of retaliation linked to two employees who were sidelined over a January mishap involving a Boeing 737 Max 9 in which a door plug detached mid-flight. A preliminary report found that four bolts intended to secure the door plug had been missing when the accident occurred. The workers were placed in a different building where Boeing builds wings, which the NTSB said in a report workers refer to as “Boeing prison,” Homendy said at Tuesday’s hearing. Boeing is working on plug sensor changes that will not allow the door plug to fully close if there are any issues until it is firmly secured. Boeing committed under oath to work with the NTSB without interference on a safety culture survey of Boeing employees.

Mortgage interest rates dropped last week to the lowest level since May 2023, causing a surge in mortgage demand from both homebuyers and especially current homeowners. Total mortgage application volume rose 6.9% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. "Despite the downward movement in rates, purchase activity only saw small gains, with an increase in conventional purchase applications offset by decreases in government purchase applications. "This is how things often play out when the bond market forces a quick move to extreme rate levels. For example, several of the biggest drops in daily mortgage rates have followed quick moves to long-term highs," wrote Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily.

A sharp sell-off in 2024's winning tech giants has left investors wondering whether it's safe to scoop up the pummeled shares. At one point during Monday's rout, the "Magnificent Seven" stocks combined had lost nearly $1 trillion in value , later recovering some of the losses. To be sure, some investors on Wall Street are pumping the brakes after Monday's sell-off, cautioning others to hold off on buying the dip just yet. Many investors viewed the sell-off as a necessary pullback in what's been a seemingly endless uptrend in the market. Like many investors, he also views Monday's pullback as a small blip in the AI trade's record run.

Your mother is kidnapped from her home and brutally murdered, her body dumped in the woods off a quiet country road. The authorities find a suspect, tell you they’re going to seek the death penalty and ask you if you’re OK with that. The film is the second in a three-part series, with each taking a critical view of the death penalty by exposing flaws in cases and questioning whether retributive justice can truly provide closure. The videos are in keeping with The Times’s longstanding position that the punishment is full of bias and error, morally abhorrent and futile in deterring crime and should be abolished. The series lands at a hopeful but still challenging time in the movement to get rid of capital punishment in the United States.

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — An inmate was sentenced to more than four years Thursday for his role in the 2018 fatal bludgeoning of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger in a troubled West Virginia federal prison. Massachusetts gangster Paul J. DeCologero was sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to an assault charge. Defense attorney Patrick Nash began by conveying an apology from DeCologero to Bulger’s family as well as the inmate’s own relatives. In Bulger’s killing, “Paul was involved,” Nash said. After Bulger was killed, prison officials were criticized for placing him in the general population instead of more protective housing.

Federal court records show that Joshua Conner Jones entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors regarding the treatment of two inmates at the Walker County jail. Jones agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to deprive an inmate of their rights related to the 2023 death of Tony Mitchell. The plea agreement indicated there were five co-conspirators in the mistreatment that led to Mitchell’s death, an indication that the investigation is ongoing and more people could be charged in the death. Court documents did not name the inmate who died, but Bower confirmed the charge was related to Mitchell’s 2023 death. Prosecutors wrote in the plea agreement that Jones admitted that “collectively we did it.

Most people expected fireworks when it was announced that former President Donald Trump would appear at this year's National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. And the conversation has heightened pressure on the NABJ from its members over the Trump visit. NABJ President Ken Lemon in a statement Tuesday said that the organization had been in talks with Harris' team for an in-person panel before she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. But April Ryan, the White House correspondent for The Grio, reported that NABJ leadership informed Harris' team that it was preferable that she be in-person for her appearance. NABJ member Kathia Woods took to X to express her opposition to the organization's decision to invite Trump to speak in Chicago.
