To the Editor:Re “By Dropping Civics, Colleges Gave Fuel to the Culture Wars,” by Debra Satz and Dan Edelstein (Opinion guest essay, Sept. 7):As a humanities professor for three decades, I am frequently amazed at the — dare I say — hubris of my colleagues when it comes to their estimate of their capacity to mold the conscience of the Republic. Professors Satz and Edelstein believe that the decline in prevalence of “Western Civ” courses in the curriculum has been a key element in the degradation of our civic culture. Their notion that some 40 hours of class time turned students’ souls toward the light is indeed touching, but highly unlikely. They neglect to mention, for example, that in the days they look back on fondly, when freshmen wrestled with the eternal verities revealed by Socrates, these courses seldom moved Southern whites to rethink their subjugation of Black people, or Northern whites to call their Southern brothers and sisters to account. Colleges can do many things, but turning the culture away from its immemorial vices is not one of them.

NEW YORK (AP) — Some organizations representing minority journalists say they're worried that outlets reporting on their communities will be left behind in a recently-announced $500 million initiative aimed at boosting the struggling local news industry. They urged that Press Forward Initiative, a group of 20 funders led by the Knight and MacArthur Foundations, to more explicitly commit to funding these outlets, particularly those run by minorities. “They're sort of skirting around it,” said Martin Reynolds, co-executive director of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, on Tuesday. The letter to Press Forward sent on Tuesday was signed by the Asian American Journalists Association, the Indigenous Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The organizations that spoke out on Tuesday said they “didn't hesitate to applaud” when the latest funding initiative was announced, and pleased that “improving diversity of experience and thought” was set as part of the mission.

Bobby Schiffman, who guided the Apollo Theater in Harlem through the seismic cultural and musical changes of the 1960s and early ’70s, cementing its place as a world-renowned showcase for Black music and entertainment, died on Sept. 6 at his home in Boynton Beach, Fla. In 1961, Mr. Schiffman inherited the reins of the storied neoclassical Apollo Theater on West 125th Street in Manhattan from his father, Frank Schiffman. The elder Mr. Schiffman, along with a financial partner, Leo Brecher, had taken over the theater — a former burlesque house that opened in 1914 as a whites-only establishment — in 1935. During the 1930s and ’40s, the elder Mr. Schiffman provided early exposure to countless African American luminaries, including Count Basie, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. “In Harlem show business circles he was God — a five-foot-nine-inch, white, Jewish, balding, bespectacled deity,” the music writer Ted Fox observed in his 1983 book, “Showtime at the Apollo.”

I don’t believe in drinking seasonally. I believe in eating seasonally, and that largely dictates which wines I drink. With fresh vegetables in hot weather, and with plenty of seafood, I tend to pick lighter wines, not always white but mostly. It’s not so much a matter of color but of weight, which encompasses the full spectrum of wines. People unfamiliar with the idea of a racial map may have been surprised by Black responses to Jason Aldean’s country song “Try That in a Small Town,” which became a hit this summer. I wonder how often vigilante groups were formed to protect Black Southerners from harm rather than inflict it upon them. According to Mr. Aldean, it is simply about the traditional values of small-town America. Do we discover it during the first centuries of the Republic when slavery was the law of the land? The small-town song, in the end, is about a return to a glorious past that existed only for some.

A photo by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for an initiative called “No Place for Hate” has been altered to replace the word “hate” with “whites,” yet some online posts share the edited photo alongside calls to ban the nonprofit. ADL created the “No Place for Hate” initiative to provide schools and communities with a framework for combating bias, bullying and hatred. A post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “Why does the ADL promote this overt anti-White hatred and bigotry? The photo shows four people holding balloons that read: “NO place for WHITES.”Another example on Facebook said, in part, “The ADL is an anti white hate group” and calls for a ban on the ADL (here). The unemployment rate for Black Americans historically has risen before an approaching recession and typically has turned higher before that of other groups. August's half-percentage point drop to 5.3% came as the rates for whites, Hispanics and Asian Americans all rose. The overall U.S. jobless rate rose to 3.8% from 3.5%, but that was the result of growth in the workforce. The unemployment rate gap between Black and white Americans fell back to 1.9 percentage points, just 0.3 percentage points shy of the record 1.6-point gap in April.

Dark RedsNot a particularly helpful designation as color in red wines can mean little. The assumption is that the darker the color the denser and more tannic the wine, but it’s not true. One exception with color: Young reds will be brighter while well-aged wines will seem duller and paler around the edges. It’s both the oldest method and newly fashionable, and produces somewhat simple wines that can be fresh and delicious. Until very recently, the Nickelodeon-green, almost teal pesto was a total mystery to me, a recipe I tried to replicate for years to no avail. But it’s the key to this dish, the most striking feature of an otherwise ordinary seafood pasta. But the pesto at Da Andrea is always shiny velvet, a shade of green that feels as if you’ve blended neon Chicago-dog relish into cream. Without the nuts, the pesto was pure basil, its floral aroma buoyed by an unbreakable emulsion of liquid and fat. Overwhelming majorities of Republican voters dismiss the charges against Trump. In Gallup’s latest annual survey of trust in institutions, Republicans expressed less faith in 10 of the 16 measured. Veteran GOP pollster Whit Ayres points to another, more personal, reason so many GOP voters have discounted the charges against Trump. But if the Republican Party is no longer in Reagan’s image, it’s not necessarily a populist-conservative MAGA monolith, either. But if the Republican Party isn’t quite a MAGA monolith, what is it? The groups were defined by how Republican-leaning voters felt on the issues — not how they felt about Mr. Trump. In fact, Mr. Trump leads Mr. DeSantis among every group of Republican voters identified in the analysis. They’re the smallest group of Republicans today, but this group of relatively moderate but anti-woke voters might play an important role in the Republican Party in the years ahead.
