Multiple fatalities and some injuries have been reported in the small city of Greenfield, Iowa – about 50 miles southwest of Des Moines – after a tornado carved a devastating path through the community Tuesday evening, Iowa State Patrol spokesperson Sgt. “There is basically nothing left,” Clel Baudler, a former Iowa state representative who lives a half mile from Greenfield, told CNN on Tuesday. Power outages across Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois left nearly 200,000 homes and businesses in the dark as of Tuesday night, according to PowerOutage.us. A few tornadoes could strike from Texas to Arkansas, but hail and powerful winds are possible anywhere along the storms’ path. Heaps of rubble blanket Greenfield, Iowa, after a tornado touched down Tuesday.

CNN —Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split on Wednesday, making buying shares in the red-hot semiconductor company more accessible for individual investors. Five years ago, an investor could have purchased Nvidia stock for less than $50 a share. Nvidia’s (NVDA) announcement, which came in its quarterly earnings report, means that each common share will be split into 10 smaller shares, effectively cutting the price of investing in the company. Nvidia shares rose as much as 4% in after-hours trading following the report. Still, some investors had raised questions ahead of Wednesday’s report about just how long Nvidia could keep the rally going.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, performed funeral prayers on Wednesday for the country’s president who was killed in a helicopter crash, as thousands of Iranians packed the streets of Tehran on an official day of mourning. The president, Ebrahim Raisi, 63, was killed along with Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, 60, and five others traveling with them on Sunday. Funeral observances began on Tuesday with a procession in Tabriz, the closest big city to the crash site in northwestern Iran. Iran’s security forces implemented tight restrictions on vehicle movement and parking in the area where funeral processions would begin, the Tehran police chief, Col. Abdolfazl Mousavipour, told state television overnight. State television also reported that public transportation would be free on Wednesday — declared a national holiday — to enable people to attend the funeral.

FCC is considering AI rules for political ads
  + stars: | 2024-05-22 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Washington CNN —The Federal Communications Commission is taking initial steps toward new rules that could require political ads on TV and radio to include disclaimers about the use of artificial intelligence. Under the proposed rules, political advertisers on those mediums would have to make on-air disclosures if their ads contain AI-generated content. The FCC move seeks to fill a yawning gap in the regulation of artificial intelligence in political advertising. In March, a bipartisan proposal by Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski unveiled the AI Transparency in Elections Act, which could require AI disclaimers on political ads. Online platforms such as Meta have taken their own steps to address AI in political ads, requiring campaigns to disclose the use of deepfakes and banning the use of its in-house generative AI tools for political advertising.

The S&P 500’s utility sector has gained 14% this year, making it the third-best-performing category behind information technology and communication services. Utility stocks tumbled more than 10% in 2023, underperforming the S&P 500’s 24% gain, as investors betting on the artificial intelligence boom crowded into the Magnificent Seven big tech stocks. To be sure, not everyone is jumping into utility stocks. Rising gasoline and shelter costs accounted for more than 70% of the monthly increase in overall inflation, according to the report. Including the ticket price, UK concertgoers will spend, on average, £848 ($1,068) each, which is more than 12 times the average cost of a night out in the UK, according to Barclays’ research.

Inflation euphoria goes globalStocks in Asia and parts of Europe rose on Thursday as investors bet that new data showing inflation easing would finally persuade central bankers to lower interest rates from multidecade highs. Another test comes on Thursday when Walmart, a bellwether for U.S. consumer sentiment, reports quarterly results. The market moves follow Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index report, which came in better than expected. Inflation remains well above the Fed’s 2 percent target, but traders were encouraged by the results. The futures market now sees two Fed rate cuts this year, the first most likely coming in September.

CNN —After a hot start to 2024, inflation cooled back down in April, providing a bit of hope for Americans worn down by elevated prices. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.3%, a slower pace of growth than the 0.4% seen in the two months prior. Rising gasoline and shelter costs accounted for more than 70% of the monthly increase in overall inflation, according to the report. Wednesday’s report landed mostly in line with economists’ expectations, which is a welcome turnabout from January, February and March, when CPI (and other inflation gauges) came in hot, hot, hot. The Federal Reserve has been wanting to see meaningful process on inflation before it starts trimming back interest rates.

But economists cautioned that one month of encouraging data was far from enough to set those worries to rest. Both overall and core prices rose 0.3 percent from the previous month, down from 0.4 percent in February and March. The encouraging inflation report on Wednesday is unlikely to change those expectations. The report is also likely to be met with relief at the White House after what has been a rough recent run of inflation data for President Biden. Gasoline prices rose a seasonally adjusted 2.8 percent in April from March.

Tuesday’s wholesale inflation data, which jumped to its highest rate in a year, certainly wasn’t a source of comfort. “I wouldn’t call it hot, I would call it sort of mixed,” Powell said Tuesday, referring to the new wholesale inflation data. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell (center) spoke Tuesday at an event hosted by the Foreign Bankers' Association alongside European Central Bank Governing Council member Klaas Knot. Another troubling sign for US central bankers is consumers’ belief that inflation will move higher in the year ahead, according to two surveys Fed officials monitor closely. Traders at JPMorgan broke down how they expect stocks will react to Wednesday's report, with a focus on core CPI month over month, based on six different scenarios: 40% chance — The reading rises 0.3%-0.35%: This is the most likely outcome, per JPMorgan traders. S & P 500 moves could range between a 0.5% loss and a 1% gain. 10% chance — Core inflation climbs more than 0.4%: The S & P 500 would drop 1.75% to 2.5% under such a hot report, JPMorgan traders think. 7.5% chance — Core CPI gains 0.2%-0.25%: A decline in housing cost increases along with lower core goods prices could make this outcome possible. It would also send the S & P 500 up 1.5% to 2%, JPMorgan traders said.

The arrests came after a months-long investigation by the attorney general’s office into the risks of sexual exploitation of children on Facebook and Instagram. That investigation also formed the basis of a lawsuit against Meta, filed in December, accusing the tech giant of creating a “breeding ground” for child predators. The company also said in December that it had launched technology to proactively detect and disable accounts displaying suspicious behaviors and that it formed a Child Safety Task Force. But Torrez said during Wednesday’s press conference that the arrests underscore the ongoing, real-world risks to children from Meta’s platforms. “Throughout the conversation Fernando sent pictures of his genitals and spoke to her about having sex,” a press release from the attorney general’s office states.

The House of Representatives is one of Washington’s most raucous forums, a free-for-all of personalities with profiles to raise and points to score. But it turns out that the rough-and-tumble of steering a public school district — board sessions, P.T.A. meetings, battles over textbooks and discipline — may be sound preparation for the rough-and-tumble of testifying before the House. As public school leaders showed on Wednesday, mixing it up a bit can go far toward neutralizing a Congress with a craving for the spotlight. At earlier hearings, university presidents opted for strategies of conciliatory genuflection or drab, lawyerly answers.

Biden faces widening partisan split over Israel
  + stars: | 2024-05-06 | by ( Ronald Brownstein | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
CNN —President Joe Biden is facing more critical moments this week that will test his fraught relationship with his base over Israel’s war in Gaza and potentially widen the partisan split about the Jewish state that has been building for years. Against this backdrop, partisan polarization about Israel among American voters was already widening years before the brutal Hamas attack last October and the devastating Israeli response it triggered. An array of polls this spring show how the war in Gaza has hardened this partisan split. Nearly half of Democrats, but only a little over one-fifth of Republicans in the CBS poll, said the US should pressure Israel to stop the fighting. “Biden has a Democratic caucus that is putting a lot of faith in this process,” she said.

Real Madrid wins record-extending 36th La Liga title

CNN —Real Madrid sealed a record-extending 36th La Liga title on Saturday after rival Barcelona suffered a second-half collapse against Girona, succumbing to a 4-2 defeat which ensured that Los Blancos cannot be overtaken at the top of the table. Such has been Real Madrid’s dominance in the league this season that a 36th title has seemed almost assured for a while now. Goals from Brahim Díaz, Joselu and, of course, Jude Bellingham propelled Real Madrid to its decisive win against Cádiz on Saturday. “I’d be lying to you if I told you that when I was little I didn’t dream of winning a La Liga as captain,” Real Madrid captain Nacho told his club’s website, after winning his fourth league title. For a club that has won as many trophies as Real Madrid, winning the league represents only a job half-done - it is winning in Europe that truly counts.

The unemployment rate ticked higher as well, to 3.9% from 3.8% the month before. That’s because the Federal Reserve is working to slow the economy by hiking interest rates — the only tool it has to fight inflation. A still-robust job market means the central bank could continue to keep rates elevated without fear of sending the economy into a recession. If the labor market weakens, the Fed is more likely to consider a rate cut. “We’re also prepared to respond to an unexpected weakening in the labor market,” he said.
