Despite the odds, active managers turned in a better-than-expected performance in 2023, according to a report out today by S & P Global. The bad news: the long-term performance of active managers remained dismal. The majority (60%) of large-cap fund managers underperformed the S & P 500 in 2023, according to S & P Global. While that may not seem like an impressive performance, it is slightly better than the historic average of 64% that underperform the S & P 500. Surprising, because 2023 was a tough year for active managers.

The South Korean government on Monday said that it was moving to suspend the licenses of thousands of doctors who walked off the job nearly two weeks ago, threatening to escalate a dispute that has shaken the nation’s health care system. The announcement came after thousands of physicians, nurses and medical professionals took to the streets on Sunday, rallying with banners that read: “Doctors are not criminals! For more than a month, young doctors have been in a high-stakes dispute with the government over the future of health care in the country. Nearly 10,000 interns and residents, about a tenth of all doctors in the nation, have walked off the job, with most ignoring a Thursday deadline to return to work. On Monday, the government said it would begin to suspend the licenses of around 7,000 of those doctors.

☆ Just over half of Americans over the age of 65 are earning under $30,000 a year, and it shows how stark the retirement crisis is

Many older Americans are financially vulnerable, with over half living on incomes of $30,000 or less a year. And, as Sanders' report notes, about 10% of older Americans live in poverty, according to an analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Without Social Security income, around 38% of Americans 65 and older would be living below the poverty line. Even so, America's Social Security benefits lag behind many other wealthy countries; benefits amount to, on average, 51.8% of workers' earnings across the OECD. All of that comes as older Americans see their adult children leaning on them financially, as Gen Zers and millennials weather their own economic storms.
