The second day of the Republican National Convention will feature remarks from a bevy of Republican lawmakers and other prominent political figures, including multiple former Trump campaign rivals. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential primary and was recently a finalist to be his running mate, is set to speak. Also on the schedule: Trump's former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump in the 2024 GOP primary and did not immediately endorse him when she ended her presidential campaign. Haley said in an exit speech that Trump would have to "earn the votes" of Republicans who did not back him. Ron DeSantis, who was once seen as Trump's most formidable challenger in the primary, is also on the list.

Read previewHere's an update from Vivek Ramaswamy's attempt to take over, or at least influence, BuzzFeed: Nothing's happening. There's a reason the non-news is worth noting today, though: It's July 15, the deadline Ramaswamy set for BuzzFeed to expand its board of directors by adding three new members he proposed. AdvertisementLast month, Ramaswamy and two of his proposed directors met with BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti via conference call, which people on both sides of the table described as cordial. And if Ramaswamy has any plans to ratchet up pressure on BuzzFeed, he has yet to disclose them. That is: We're still wondering if Ramaswamy has spent millions on BuzzFeed because he wants attention, or wants to make money, or maybe both.

Various Trump megadonors are also on the RNC lineup including venture capitalist David Sacks and investors Steve and Zach Witkoff. In total, the RNC will have over 80 speakers rallying support around Trump before the convention culminates in officially designating him the Republican presidential nominee. Notably missing from the RNC speaker list is former First Lady Melania Trump, as well as Trump's daughter and former White House advisor Ivanka Trump. For years, far-right commentators have floated a conspiracy theory that Democratic Party elites were secretly plotting to replace President Biden on the ticket — a switcheroo that could give the party an advantage in November. Suddenly, Mr. Biden being replaced by another Democrat as the party’s presidential nominee seems like a distinct possibility. There is no evidence that the chaotic events following June’s debate were planned or that Mr. Biden’s halting performance was intentional. But the crisis over his candidacy has right-wing influencers heralding the moment as a conspiracy theory turned true. “It was their final opportunity to toss the old man to one side, as I’ve been saying for the entire last year and a half,” said Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential candidate, in a podcast interview after the debate.

In this gilded echo chamber, Mr. Trump enjoys unwavering devotion — and collects the staggering price of admission. During the 2014-15 season — the last before Mr. Trump officially entered politics — The Times counted 52 fund-raiser events at Mar-a-Lago. More than two dozen midterm candidates had already held fund-raisers on the property when Mr. Trump made that statement. But that changed when Letitia James, the New York attorney general, sued Mr. Trump for exaggerating the value of his properties. And, unlike when Mr. Trump was president, “he was there a lot,” Mr. Rustmann said.

Around 8 in 10 people infected with West Nile virus don’t show symptoms. These symptoms can often be confused with those of other viruses, so the majority of West Nile cases are never diagnosed. The CDC’s tally for West Nile cases this year is likely an undercount, since several states have reported additional human cases in recent weeks. Raman said he’s worried about more West Nile transmission during monsoon season in the Las Vegas area, which is expected to start soon. The county announced in late June that one person, a blood donor, had tested positive for West Nile virus.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the White House and federal agencies such as the FBI may continue to urge social media platforms to take down content the government views as misinformation, handing the Biden administration a technical if important election-year victory. Republican officials in two states – Missouri and Louisiana – and five social media users sued over that practice in 2022, arguing that the White House did far more than “persuade” the tech giants to take down a few deceptive items. That might include, the justices theorized, social media threats targeting public figures or disclosures of sensitive information about US troops. The case arrived at the high court at a time when the government has repeatedly warned of foreign efforts to use social media to influence elections. The jawboning case was one of several high-profile matters the court is deciding at intersection of the First Amendment and social media.

People who scored high on the loneliness scale both times they were surveyed had a much higher risk of stroke, the study said. And that feeling of loneliness is what the study found to be correlated to the increased risk of stroke, Soh said. “Make it be known that you are experiencing feelings of loneliness, and also identify what would be helpful for you specifically to address the feelings of loneliness,” Soh said.

The U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, on Tuesday declared gun violence in America a public health crisis, recommending an array of preventive measures that he compared to past campaigns against smoking and traffic safety. The step follows years of calls by health officials to view firearm deaths through the lens of health rather than politics. The National Rifle Association has vigorously opposed this framing and promoted legislation that effectively quashed federal funding for research into gun violence for a quarter-century. also unsuccessfully lobbied against Dr. Murthy’s nomination as surgeon general by Barack Obama in 2014, calling him “a serious threat to the rights of gun owners.”Dr. Murthy’s 32-page advisory calls for an increase in funding for firearm violence prevention research; advises health workers to discuss firearm storage with patients during routine medical visits; and recommends safe storage laws, universal background checks, “red flag” laws and an assault weapons ban, among other measures.

Opinion | Should Social Media Come With Warning Labels?

To the Editor:Re “Social Media Platforms Need a Health Warning,” by Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. surgeon general (Opinion guest essay, June 18):Dr. Murthy makes a compelling case for social media warning labels and offers parents sound suggestions for protecting their kids from toxic content. An entire generation of children is growing up watching their parents, older siblings and other family members glued to their phones, posting pictures, sharing memes, debating politics and doomscrolling day and night as life passes them by. Consistently modeling the behavior they’d like to see in their kids would circumvent even the most powerful algorithms and make parents the ultimate social media influencers. Authors of a sweeping new review of research into social media and mental health say there’s still key information missing to know whether prevention programs and interventions will work. In the study, published Monday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers reviewed nearly 150 studies on the relationship between social media and the mental health of adolescents. For Murthy, the urgency of the youth mental health crisis is dominant — and there’s enough evidence to act now. “There are certain benefits, but getting some benefits does not justify forcing kids to endure significant harm.”Still, social media is not the same as cigarettes. “To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people,” he wrote.

Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J.
