‘Lunar Codex’ aims to bring human art to the moon
  + stars: | 2023-08-15 | by ( Jacopo Prisco | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Nicknamed “Moon Museum,” it was attached to a leg of the spacecraft and then left on the moon with it. Called the Lunar Codex, it will be split across three launches planned over the next 18 months. The artworks that make up the Lunar Codex will be miniaturized in nickel NanoFiche. Peralta originally intended the Lunar Codex to include only his own works, such as "Sonnets from the Labrador," but reconceived the project as a global endeavor during the pandemic. Jack Burns, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder, thinks the Lunar Codex is a cool concept.

Mars is rotating more quickly, NASA mission finds
  + stars: | 2023-08-14 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Mars is rotating more quickly than it used to, according to data that NASA’s InSight lander collected on the red planet. Initially, the InSight mission, the first to study the interior of Mars, was supposed to last about two years after it landed in November 2018. The InSight mission continued to collect data about Mars until the very end, falling silent in December 2022 after dust blocked its solar panels from receiving sunlight. Researchers then used RISE to measure the wobble of Mars as the core sloshes around inside it. This new figure was compared with previous estimates of the core’s radius that were collected by tracking seismic waves as they traveled through Mars’ interior.

However, the pharmaceutical companies are making the case that weight loss can improve health, and possibly lower health-care costs over time. But analysts have said the news isn't all bad for such stocks, and many were fell too low on Tuesday. Deutsche Bank analyst Imron Zafar estimated Thursday that bariatric surgery accounts for about 5% of Intuitive Surgical's U.S. robotic surgery business, but has been driving much of the company's growth. Some of the surgeons Zafar spoke with said any drop off in bariatric surgery was likely to be offset by increased use of the robot for other procedures. But they expect the drugs will remain necessary because GLP-1 drugs have yet to show they improve fibrosis, which is associated with NASH.

Adolph sued Uber in 2019, claiming the company misclassified UberEats drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, who must be reimbursed for work expenses under California law. A unique California law called the Private Attorney General Act, or PAGA, allows workers to sue for employment law violations on behalf of the state and keep one-quarter of any money they win. The California Supreme Court said nothing in that law bars workers from pursuing claims on their own behalf in arbitration while separately litigating large-scale claims in court. Michael Rubin, who represents Adolph, said the ruling could spur companies to reconsider forcing workers' claims into arbitration if large-scale PAGA lawsuits can still proceed in court. Business groups maintain that arbitration is quicker and more efficient than court, allowing workers to recoup more money.

It was one of a twin set of spacecraft designed to take images of Mars, and the first one failed. Dan Goods/NASA/JPL-CaltechThe transmission was incredibly slow by today’s standards, given that the Perseverance rover regularly sends back batches of high-resolution images from Mars. Together, they revealed craters on the Martian surface and clouds floating above in the atmosphere, both of which surprised scientists. The highest-resolution Mariner 4 image (right) revealed the cratered Martian surface from 7,830 miles (12,601 kilometers) above. JPL/NASAThe snapshots showed less than 1% of the Martian surface, missing the more diverse features on the planet’s surface that later missions such as Viking 1 would capture.

CNN —Whether from Miami, New York, Seattle or more, millions of Americans pack aboard cruise ships on vacation. That’s the highest number of norovirus outbreaks on cruises recorded since 2012, with almost half of the calendar year left to go. Still, to prevent the spread of norovirus, Schaffner recommends that cruise passengers take extra precautions and wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. According to data from the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, the number of norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships docking at U.S. ports had years of steady decline after 2015. Overall rates of acute gastroenteritis on cruise ships in the U.S. also decreased from 2006 to 2019.

These are the cruise ships with the best and worst sanitation report cards in 2023 so far. There's nothing like a stomach virus to ruin your vacation, as hundreds of cruise ship passengers have unfortunately learned this year. "People often associate cruise ships with acute gastrointestinal illnesses such as norovirus, but acute gastrointestinal illness is relatively infrequent on cruise ships," the CDC explains on its website. In the past 10 years, only three other cruise ships have received sanitation scores below 70, CDC records show. Wegovy was approved as an obesity treatment in June 2021 , but Ozempic, a Type 2 diabetes treatment, has been used off-label for weight loss. Mounjaro uses GLP-1 and gastric inhibitory polypeptide, or GIP, to help patients lose weight. Eli Lilly's oral drug, orforglipron, has an even better profile . They also could be helpful in assisting patients in maintaining weight loss after they've used the injectable versions, he said. More than 13% of passengers on board the Viking Neptune this month fell ill with norovirus, the CDC said. The health agency has already logged 13 outbreaks of the contagious virus on cruise ships this year. The Viking Neptune transformed into a cross-continental petri dish as more than 100 passengers onboard the cruise ship fell ill with the highly contagious norovirus this month. Gastrointestinal illnesses have long been frequent guests aboard cruise ships, where cramped quarters allow germs to spread easily, and the highly contagious norovirus is the most notorious cruise ship culprit. In March, more than 300 people on board a Princess Cruise ship fell ill with the virus, and another outbreak hit 177 people traveling on a Celebrity Cruise ship earlier this month.

Interbreeding with Homo sapiens helps to explain why millions can't straighten their fingers. There is also a Neanderthal gene variant that increases the risk of somebody dying from COVID-19. The study evidences that "intermingling" from Neanderthals and our Homo sapiens ancestors is consequential in examining the prevalence of certain diseases, researchers said. No more than 7% of the human genome is unique to Homo sapiens, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances. Brain development and function are what sets Homo sapiens apart, experts explained.

European leaders complained for years that the United States was not doing enough to fight climate change. Officials have been traveling there to court one of Europe’s few homegrown battery companies, Northvolt. Led by a former Tesla executive, Northvolt is a small player in the global battery industry, but European leaders are offering it hundreds of millions of euros to build factories in Europe. Mr. Habeck visited in February to lobby the company to push ahead on its plan to build a factory near Hamburg, Germany. The company had considered postponing to invest in the United States instead.

The remote islands that are critical to a UK bet on wind energy

Scotland offers some of the windiest conditions in Europe, making the Shetland Islands, located in the northernmost region of the U.K., the best place to develop and harvest wind energy. To that end, British power firm SSE has invested millions into what will be the country's largest onshore wind farm when it is completed in 2024. The Viking wind farm, with its 103 turbines, could power almost half a million homes. However, a lack of capacity in the U.K.'s power grid could derail its ambitious goal of being carbon-free by 2030. We visited the Viking wind farm that has been in the making for more than 15 years to find out more.

After the local government decided to build an observation tower atop a sandy hill on Wolin, an island in the Baltic Sea, a Polish archaeologist was called in to check the site before construction and look for buried artifacts from the spot’s macabre past. Hangmen’s Hill, a public park, had in earlier times been an execution ground, a cemetery and, some believe, a place for human sacrifices — so who knew what grisly discoveries were in store? But what the archaeologist, Wojciech Filipowiak, found when he started digging caused more excitement than distaste: charcoaled wood indicating the remains of a 10th-century stronghold that could help solve one of the great riddles of the Viking Age. Was a fearsome fortress mentioned in ancient texts a literary fantasy or a historical reality? It has long been known that Nordic warriors established outposts more than a millennium ago on Poland’s Baltic coast, enslaving indigenous Slavic peoples to supply a booming slave trade, as well trading in salt, amber and other commodities.
