Marie Bailey moved from California to Texas with her husband and daughter in 2017. When we went on our first date together, we said: "One day we're going to leave California." We didn't want to pay that rent forever, so we were looking at how much houses cost in El Segundo. Bailey and her family were able to build their dream home in Texas for about the same price they sold their California house, she said. I was thinking maybe if I won a billion dollars, I'll get a beautiful beach house in California and go back.

Deflation — the trend of prices falling throughout the economy — presents a particularly dangerous trajectory for China, which carries a massive amount of debt. The main components of GDP on the demand side — consumption, investment, net exports — they all have serious problems right now." A shaky property marketMost of China's economic troubles tie directly into its property market. Roughly a quarter of China's population works in agriculture — well above the 3% mark in the US — and that presents its own productivity limitations. From an unstable, debt-ridden property market to anti-business policies and demographic issues, Beijing has plenty to tackle if it hopes to match the same growth as decades past.

A new bus route plan for Kentucky's largest school district left students on buses until 10 p.m. The school district is giving bus drivers time to practice their new routes over the weekend. The school district is home to Louisville, which is Kentucky's largest city with a population of 628,000, according to the US Census Bureau. Pollio said the school district would work through the weekend to update its bus route system to ensure there is no "repeat of what happened." According to Pollio, the school district is going to review all bus stops for "efficiency," pay its bus drivers to practice their new bus routes, and "dramatically increase" the capacity of its bus system call center.

Rather, the homeownership rate measures the percentage of all occupied housing owned by the occupants, as opposed to occupied by renters. By 2022, the US homeownership rate was 65.8%, up from 64.6% in 2019. Homeownership rates dipped as low as 63.4% following the foreclosure crisis that began in 2004 and the Great Recession that began in 2008. Homeownership rates have recovered just half of the 5.6% drop in homeownership between 2004 and 2016. Between 2016 and 2019, the homeownership rate increased for buyers under 55, according to the Census Bureau.

Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara said more Indigenous people felt comfortable identifying themselves as such. Tebet told reporters the new population numbers will allow for improved budget funding for policies to help Indigenous communities, in education but mainly in health services and basic sanitation to make up for government neglect. Half of Brazil's Indigenous communities live in the Amazon region, some 867,900, with the highest urban concentration in the city of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state. But the main reason for the exponential growth in numbers, besides higher fertility rates among Indigenous communities, is the rise in visibility of Brazil's Indigenous movement, he said. "When you have strong Indigenous leaders bringing positive connotations to being Indigenous, this encourages people to begin identifying themselves," Barros said by telephone.

Jackson, Mississippi, led the nation in the rate of population decline from July 2021 to July 2022. Though the Midwest is experiencing a "doom loop" in many of its cities, in which remote work has slowed the economies of Midwestern cities, only one Midwestern city made the top ten cities and towns shrinking at the fastest rate between 2021 and 2022. In an analysis of nearly 20,000 cities, towns, villages, and boroughs across the US, the Census Bureau found that places in Utah and Louisiana saw especially sharp declines. Some residents left following the city's water crisis, sparked by poor infrastructure and climate change. Three Utah cities outside of the Salt Lake City area — Taylorsville, Orem, and Sandy — also had above 2% losses in population.

Some young adults in China are opting to work as "full-time children" in place of traditional careers. Full-time children are often paid by their parents to run errands, clean, and prepare food. In China, however, young people are turning this idea on its head and staying at home, working as "full-time children." China's notoriously grueling 996 culture, which entails 72-hour workweeks, and difficulty finding employment are some of the main contributors to the "full-time children" movement. In China, there are even social media groups devoted to the "full-time children" trend.

Personal finance company Wallethub ranked the best places to rent in the US in 2023. It weighed factors like rents, job opportunities, and quality of life in more than 180 markets. A new report from Wallethub identifies where renters can get the maximum bang for their buck this year. "We looked at two things here: rental market affordability and quality of life. So when you're actually looking at rental affordability, that is calculated not only by sheer rent, but then dividing that by median annual household income.

But after 10 rate hikes, the housing market — traditionally one of the most interest-rate-sensitive areas of the economy — is anything but predictable. Mortgage rates then continued to climb in tandem with the Fed’s hikes until November, when mortgage rates peaked at 7.08%, despite four subsequent rate hikes since then. Higher mortgage rates have reduced home inventoryIn theory, when mortgage rates go up, home prices should fall since it raises the cost of homeownership, thereby reducing demand. That’s partly because the higher mortgage rates that came after the Fed hiked rates created a major lock-in effect, said Kiefer. “That tells the crux of the story for why the housing market seems a bit odd right now,” Divounguy said.

More than 2,500 US adults said they would need to earn, on average, $233,000 a year to feel financially secure and $483,000 annually to feel rich or to attain financial freedom, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Plus, a big income isn’t necessarily a guarantee of financial security if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, not saving much and carrying big debts. In Bankrate’s survey 72% of respondents said they did not currently feel financially secure, although 46% said they expect to someday.

CNN —If you’ve made it to your 40th birthday without tying the knot, you’re not alone, according to a recent report from the Pew Research Center. A look at 2021 US Census Bureau data found a quarter of 40-year-olds in the United States had never been married, the research center announced Wednesday. The findings were a “significant increase” from the 20% of unmarried 40-year-olds in 2010, according to the study. The findings, which suggest a shift in Americans’ views of the importance of getting hitched, differed widely to the statistics reported decades ago in 1980, when just 6% of 40-year-olds had never married, Pew reported. If the pattern continues, the research center anticipated that “a similar share” of never-married 40-year-olds would also get married in the coming years.

It took me a few minutes of research to figure out why I was losing track of the descendants of the people George Julian enslaved. If the racial cleansing of Forsyth County was mentioned, I didn’t notice. Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.
