Seoul, South Korea CNN —A South Korean man who ate to the point of obesity in an attempt to dodge the army has avoided prison after he pledged to take up his mandatory military service. The man, whose age was not revealed by the court, has since “expressed his intention to fulfill his military duty sincerely,” the ruling said. Women are exempt from compulsory conscription, and volunteer females account for only 3.6% of the Korean military, according to the Defense Ministry. In a 2018 survey, 72% of Korean men in their 20s said they thought the draft was a form of gender discrimination, and almost 65% believed women should also be conscripted. Nearly 83% said it was better to dodge military service if possible, and 68% believed it was a waste of time.

A Senate subcommittee on Tuesday slammed U.S. airlines large and small over fees to pick seats on flights. Between 2018 and 2023 American , Delta , United , Spirit and Frontier brought in $12.4 billion in seating fees, including for seats with extra legroom as well as those in "preferred" locations that are closer to the front of the plane, or window or aisle seats, said the report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. While most major U.S. airlines have gotten rid of ticket-change fees for standard economy tickets, they have added fees to select more popular or roomier seats on board. Carriers have also been racing to add more premium seats on board to increase revenue.

CNN —Millions more senior citizens and lower-income Americans could obtain coverage for costly anti-obesity drugs under a proposal being unveiled Tuesday by the Biden administration. Some Medicare enrollees could see their out-of-pocket costs drop by as much as 95%. The incoming Trump administration may not view expanding coverage of anti-obesity drugs as favorably. About 3.6 million Medicare enrollees with cardiovascular disease could be newly eligible for Wegovy, according to a KFF analysis released in April. Not all job-based health insurance plans cover anti-obesity medications, though larger employers are more likely to offer the benefit.

Through Imran Khan’s evolution from global sports star to anti-corruption crusader and to prime minister of Pakistan — and then to outsider after his ouster in 2022 — his ability to mobilize huge street protests through social media has been a potent tool to pressure his opponents. But few protests have reached the intensity of the clashes of the past few days as his supporters marched to the capital, Islamabad, and demanded his release from prison. On Tuesday, government officials called out the army and gave it free rein to fire on protesters after six members of the security forces were killed. Again, Pakistan’s capital has become a battleground.

European stocks are heading for a lower open Tuesday as investors assess the global implications of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump 's plans to hike tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada. That in turn could boost the U.S. dollar against currencies such as the euro and sterling. "Immediate market reaction looks negative," analysts at Maybank said in a note Tuesday. "However, these tariffs do differ quite a bit from what Trump had mentioned during his campaign of 60% for China and a 10% broad tariff for the rest of the world. Whilst the market maybe cautious of the risk that Trump maybe incrementally introducing the tariffs, we do note the possibility that the final imposition may not be quite the same as what was proposed by him."

Japan halted an engine test for one of its flagship rockets after a fire broke out at the launch site on Tuesday, marking the latest setback in the country’s efforts to establish a foothold in the growing market for vehicles capable of launching satellites into orbit. Japan’s space agency had been testing the engine combustion of its Epsilon S rocket when what it described as an “abnormality” occurred shortly after ignition. Footage from NHK, the public broadcaster, showed a blaze erupting at the test site in southwestern Japan. The failed test of JAXA’s Epsilon S rocket, codeveloped with Japanese heavy-industry manufacturer IHI, follows a similar issue in 2023 that led to months of reviews and delays. JAXA has previously said it planned to launch a demonstration model of the rocket by the end of March.

CNN —Airlines have pocketed billions of dollars in so-called “junk fees” by charging customers extra to select a seat or to carry on bags, according to a Senate subcommittee report published on Tuesday. The report, from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said that in 2023, United Airlines charged as much as $319 for an extra legroom seat, Spirit Airlines charged as much as $299, Delta Air Lines charged as much as $264, Frontier Airlines charged $141 and American Airlines charged as much as $140. “The subcommittee clearly lacks appreciation for the fact that air travel today is democratized, allowing Americans across all income levels to fly.
