Trump has slammed the president for the visit, claiming Biden “had no intention” of walking the picket line until Trump said he would make a speech in Michigan. In the absence of an announced plan from the White House, speculation spread through the UAW ranks that Biden would go to whatever picket line was closest to the airport. Amid mounting political pressure to ramp up his public support, Biden is expressing solidarity with the union members, who are striking against the Big Three automakers – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis – for a second week. Union members, once a reliable Democratic voting bloc, have gradually gravitated to Republican candidates, according to CNN polls and the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation. The historic presidential picket line appearance will reaffirm his commitment to the critical voting and organizing group ahead of the 2024 election.

They gave everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry,” Biden said Monday from the White House. Biden is also leaning in on his union support at a time when labor enjoys broad support from the public, with 67% of Americans approving of labor unions in an August Gallup poll. White House officials dismissed the notion that Trump forced their hand and noted that Biden was headed to Michigan at the request of UAW President Shawn Fain, who last week invited the sitting president to join the strikers. “He is pro-UAW, he is pro-workers, that is this president,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. Dave Ellis, who stocks parts at the distribution center, said he’s happy Biden wants to show people he’s behind the middle class.

Biden will join the striking United Auto Workers on the picket line — a first for any president. Trump, like Biden, will also head to Detroit and hold an event to garner support for his 2024 run. Many unions have endorsed Biden but blue-collar workers are split on who they're voting for. "He is pro-UAW, he is pro-workers, that is this president," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. She said it was "great that we have a president who wants to support local unions and the working class."

SWARTZ CREEK, Mich. (AP) — About five people picketing in the United Auto Workers strike outside a Flint-area General Motors plant suffered minor injuries Tuesday when a vehicle leaving the plant struck them, police said. The striking workers were blocking a driveway, and an employee was trying to leave the Flint Processing Center in Swartz Creek when the collision occurred just before 4 p.m., Chief Matthew Bade of the Metro Police Authority of Genesee County said. The employee drove through the picket line to leave the plant, Bade said. “These people are out here, you know these are my membership, and they’re out here doing a peaceful, legal demonstration." The Flint Processing Center is one of 38 locations where workers walked off the job last week in the widening strike by the UAW against GM, Ford and Stellantis.

The UAW, which on Friday cited "real progress" in talks with the No. In contrast to Ford, the UAW has expanded strikes against General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) to 38 parts distribution centers across the United States. The UAW began unprecedented, simultaneous strikes on Sept. 15 at one assembly plant each of the Detroit Three after the prior four-year labor deals expired. The strikes at additional GM and Stellantis facilities on Friday added about 5,600 workers to the 12,700 previously on strike. Stellantis temporarily laid off 68 employees in Ohio last week and expects to furlough another 300 workers in Indiana because of the strike.

For the most part, the market has paid little attention, but this time the message seems to have hit home. Banks stocks have been weak, and even former leaders in industrials like Parker Hannifin have been down. Fewer than 50% of NYSE stocks are above their 200-day moving average. Energy stocks are up, but even they have been selling off in the last week, despite the rise of oil. "Rising interest rates have made commodities-related areas, from industrial metals to energy, interesting for the time being," Timmer noted.

Sept 23 (Reuters) - U.S. auto workers expanded their strike on Friday with a clear target for distress: dealers who sell and service GM and Stellantis vehicles. The strategy of choking parts delivery increases problems for some dealers who say it already had been difficult to source some components. The broader strike, which targets 38 parts distribution centers owned by GM and Stellantis, "is going to have these shops telling their customers 'We don't know when we can fix your vehicle. "It's definitely going to impact customers," said Thomas Morris, 60, who went on strike on Friday at a General Motors parts distribution center in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The center serves GM dealerships from Pennsylvania to Maine, moving some 30,000 parts for auto repairs each day, workers said.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Stellantis has said it wants to be able to consolidate and close some of its parts distribution centers. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." Fain said on Friday that the union had negotiated the elimination of lower wage tiers in some components facilities at Ford and GM.

The UAW on Friday invited Biden to visit workers on its picket lines, and said that it would expand its Detroit strike to parts distribution centers across the United States at General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). "It’s very rare for a president to visit strikers," said Jeremi Suri, a historian and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. The White House said the president appreciates the UAW invitation, saying Biden will continue to fight for workers, but but did not immediately commit to visiting the strikers. Biden said the automakers should "go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW," echoing sentiments by union leaders. Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Fain said Ford had improved its contract offer, including boosting profit sharing and agreeing to let workers strike over plant closures but said the union still has "serious issues" with Ford. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." UAW President Shawn Fain speaks at a rally in Detroit on September 15. The UAW vastly expanded its strike against GM and Stellantis Friday, although none of the plants is particularly crucial to the automakers’ operations, surprising industry insiders – even experts who predicted the UAW would implement a targeted strike. Nevertheless, the strike marks the first time in history the UAW has struck at all three automakers simultaneously. In leaked messages obtained by CNN, United Auto Workers Union Communications Director Jonah Furman said the plan is to “keep them wounded for months." "They don’t know what to do… this is recurring reputations damage and operation chaos," Furman said in one of the leaked messages.

Fain has said the Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors. The automakers have proposed 20% raises over 4-1/2 years, while the UAW is seeking 40%. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three Ford plants in the country.

Headwinds are piling up for the market heading into the final week of the month, as September lives up to its reputation as a horrible month for Wall Street. Wolfe Research's Rob Ginsberg pointed out in a note this week that the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) doesn't suggest much fear in markets. "We have a potential shutdown in Washington, as well as the UAW strike, which could potentially create some volatility in jobs data in particular." But investors heading into the final trading week of September will likely see a continuation of those losses, if history is any indication. "We could see the market experience additional weakness over the next several weeks," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA.

Employees who withhold their labor can face a number of consequences, including losing their job and health insurance, experts said. People attend a UAW rally to support striking workers outside an assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., September 21, 2023. The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike. The UAW is pushing automakers to eliminate the two-tier wage system under which new hires can earn far less than veterans.
