AP —A retired police officer in the nation’s capital was convicted Monday of lying to authorities about leaking confidential information to the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group. Lamond was charged with leaking information to then-Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio, who was under investigation in the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner. He was responsible for monitoring groups like the Proud Boys when they came to Washington. Lamond’s indictment says he and Tarrio exchanged messages about the January 6 riot and discussed whether Proud Boys members were in danger of being charged in the attack. “I don’t support the Proud Boys, and I’m not a Proud Boys sympathizer,” Lamond testified.

They are typically traded on private social media groups between fake review brokers and businesses willing to pay. Fake reviews are found across a wide range of industries, from e-commerce, lodging and restaurants, to services such as home repairs, medical care and piano lessons. Some already employ algorithms and investigative teams to detect and take down fake reviews but are giving users some flexibility to use AI. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews, which took effect in October, allows the agency to fine businesses and individuals who engage in the practice. Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, have sued fake review brokers they accuse of peddling counterfeit reviews on their sites.

Disney may respectfully shrug off the commissioner’s letter, but he cites multiple areas where the media giant is subject to FCC regulation, including station licensing. The FCC also oversees a process called retransmission consent, whereby cable distributors pay local stations for the right to retransmit their signals. Most stations with ABC shows aren’t actually owned by the network; they are owned by other companies that strike affiliation agreements with ABC. “The approach that ABC is apparently taking in these negotiations concerns me,” Carr says in the letter to Iger. In effect, he is positioning himself as a friend to local media — and an antagonist to corporate owners.

AdvertisementCurrently, individuals and married couples can gift or bequeath $13.61 million and $27.22 million, respectively, before a 40% federal estate tax kicks in. The heirs don't own the trust assets but rather have lifetime rights to the trust's income and real estate. Any payout is also protected from estate taxes, even if the insured's estate and death benefit exceed the exemption. This tactic can also be used to save on estate taxes by ultra-rich entrepreneurs who have already used their exemption but have less-wealthy parents who haven't. When the children inherit the assets, the federal estate tax doesn't kick in as long as the grandparents' estate does not exceed $27.22 million.

Editor’s note: The podcast Chasing Life With Dr. Sanjay Gupta explores the medical science behind some of life’s mysteries big and small. “That makes science kind of a form of worship, and it makes the lab almost like a cathedral. “She shared her faith with me every time she had a terrible episode of chest pain from her cardiac disease. Reclaiming that confidence and faith in science will have to be a deliberate process. “I think it also is a call to action for all of us to begin to reanchor ourselves in truth and science and faith and trust,” he said.

Aaron Goldsmid, head of product at Deel, has previously worked for Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter. This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Aaron Goldsmid, a 44-year-old from San Francisco about mistakes he made early in his career. I tell early career techies to ask themselves how their next role will get them to the role after that. You can accelerate quickly into a senior role, but taking a less fancy role and diversifying your experience might mean your upside long-term is much higher. As a senior leader at Deel, I'm very conscious about how I present myself to early career folks.

Our family looks forward to a busy holiday event attended by thousands in our town each year. Each year, on the first Saturday of December, our town hosts its annual holiday light-up night to kick off the festive season. Since our first light-up night, the event has grown substantially — and so has our family. It's a chance to hug neighbors, let the kids run free, and celebrate the loving community we are so thankful to be a part of. A few years ago, we briefly lost our youngest child at this very same holiday event.

Warren Buffett, who has long favored holding massive amounts of cash, is headed into 2025 with a particularly gigantic war chest at Berkshire Hathaway — in fact the largest cash hoard in 34 years. The Omaha-based conglomerate's cash level stands at $325 billion — a record high in absolute terms — and now accounts for about 30% of Berkshire's total assets, the highest percentage since 1990, according to data from Oppenheimer. Buffett first took control of Berkshire, originally a clothing manufacturer, in 1965 and went on to transform it into a one-of-a-kind conglomerate. Berkshire's cash has only grown after Buffett this year aggressively dumped enormous pieces of his two largest holdings, Apple and Bank of America . "This will also provide an opportunity for the successors to make their own mark when Mr. Buffett officially hands over the reins."

Wall Street is bracing for deregulation, tariffs, and new immigration policies under president-elect Donald Trump, which will have different impacts across the market. JPMorgan strategists expect the Magnificent Seven to continue pouring capital expenditures into AI in 2025 — over $500 billion, to be specific. CNN —A top Senate Democrat on Saturday accused conservative Supreme Court justices of violating federal disclosure laws in a lengthy report that caps a monthslong investigation by the Senate Judiciary Committee and comes weeks before Republicans take control of the chamber. Both Thomas and Alito have cited the “personal hospitality” exemption from annual reporting requirements, which they said relieved them of any obligation to report the trips. In response to the outcry over the Thomas trips, the Supreme Court adopted its first-ever code of conduct a year ago, but the document quickly faced criticism because it includes no enforcement mechanism. Durbin’s report also recounts a scandal this year involving two controversial flags – including an upside-down US flag – hoisted over properties that Alito owns. Republicans, including Trump, have defended Thomas and Alito and have accused Democrats of trying to delegitimize the court’s conservative majority by focusing on ethics.

Senate passes Social Security Fairness Act
  + stars: | 2024-12-21 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —The US Senate passed a bipartisan bill early Saturday to increase Social Security benefits for close to 3 million federal, state and local public sector workers, which includes firemen, policemen and teachers. The Social Security Fairness Act — which already passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support in November — eliminates two policies that have reduced Social Security benefits for public service employees. The workers affected are those who are eligible for government pensions from jobs where they didn’t pay into Social Security but who did pay into the program through other jobs or whose spouses did so. “The GPO reduces the spousal or surviving spousal benefits of people who receive pensions on the basis of noncovered employment,” CBO noted. Americans can receive retirement benefits if they have paid into Social Security for at least 10 years and are also entitled to spousal or survivor benefits if their spouse paid into the program.
