CNN —Emily Blunt is clearing up any misunderstanding about that advice she received from Tom Cruise. Blunt had told the SmartLess podcast that when she was filming 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” she was having a tough time with her heavy costume when Cruise told her “‘Come on, stop being such a p***y, OK?’ ““And I did laugh, and then we got through it,” Blunt said. “I absolutely adore Tom, he’s a dear friend and he was a total gem to me. It was said as a joke to make me laugh, which it did in a big way,” Blunt told People. Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise at the 2014 premiere of "Edge of Tomorrow."

Film lovers hoped 2022 would be the first normal year for movies in the pandemic era. Worryingly, though, ticket buyers rarely showed up for nonfranchise movies aimed at adults. Are adults in search of a meaningful film simply weary of the theatergoing experience, with its many ancient hassles plus the more recent one of omnipresent cellphones in the theater? It’s more likely that the past couple of years have simply conditioned us to expect character-based movies to appear on streaming services very soon after their theatrical releases. If anything, the pandemic has supercharged the movie industry’s relentless push toward kids’ movies and comic-book material.

There are no guarantees for a screen actor anymore. There are no guarantees for a screen actor’s audience. Perhaps that’s why we’ve turned, along with many an actor, to television, where the ground feels more fertile. There is enough outstanding work on television alone to fill a portfolio twice or three times the size of this one. We want to applaud, marvel at and salute the achievement of screen acting, the increasing miracle of it in challenging and confusing circumstances.

LOS ANGELES — The judge in the rape trial of “That ‘70s Show” star Danny Masterson dealt the defense a potential setback Monday by allowing a fourth woman who says she was assaulted by the actor to testify. Jane Doe #4 was not in cahoots with Masterson's accusers or a Scientologist, Mueller said. He said the jury should be aware there is another woman "out there with similar experience with Mr. Masterson who also was interviewed" by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department. The judge had initially barred the testimony of Jane Doe #4, who told police she was sexually assaulted by Masterson in 1996. Dua Anjam and Diana Dasrath reported from Los Angeles, Corky Siemaszko from New York City
“Maverick” flew into theaters with lots of buzz and strong reviews, and that helped the movie blow past box office projections for its opening weekend. It brought in a Memorial Day weekend record of $160 million at the North American box office. “Maverick” is an old-school box office hit made for the biggest screen possible that emerged just as the industry’s future was very much in doubt. “The commercial reception of Tom Cruise’s legacy sequel was the summer movie miracle theaters needed,” Scott Mendelson, a box office reporter, wrote for Forbes. Climbing back up the mountain"We really felt, and Tom certainly agreed with the fact that we had a great big screen movie," Bakish said.
LOS ANGELES — One Hollywood star claimed he was arrested and charged on multiple counts of rape by police and prosecutors who are biased against his church. Another prominent Hollywood figure charged with rape contends he was set up by members of a church he has publicly renounced. In both cases, the church in question is the Church of Scientology. Haggis denied Breest’s rape allegation in a counter-complaint and accused her and her lawyer of trying to extort $9 million from him. “She decided she had to do something.”In the Masterson case, he and his accusers are all current or former members of the Church of Scientology.
The Musk video by reAlpha included “robust disclaimers” establishing it as satire, said Christie Currie, chief marketing officer. The first Musk video went live days after reAlpha launched a public offering under regulation A+ in 2021. But the ease of creating deepfakes means some celebrities could soon be deluged by ads featuring their unauthorized, but very convincing likenesses, Mr. Moss said. At the same time, the language in contracts written years before the technology existed may be vague enough to allow marketers to use existing footage to create new deepfake videos. Companies most often request celebrity deepfake videos to use internally for training, communications, parties or other purposes—but not for ads, said Daynen Biggs, owner of Slack Shack Films, which produced the Elon Musk videos.
Even in their first efforts, the GAN images were quickly on par with those made by any other, less intelligent software. You can find the results on the Generated Photos site, where you can filter by ethnicity, age, sex, eye color, and other attributes. Generated Photos' GANs tend to match conventional beauty standards, a product of the models that have been fed to the software. I'm not sure anyone would be surprised to find fake images accompanying testimonials on an Estonian bitcoin exchange or an online CBD seller. Are they real people deploying fake images, or fake people deploying fake images?

But some platforms are trying to detoxify social media. Twitter; Mastodon; Vicky Leta/Insider1. One pioneering platform is working to detoxify social media. Once championed as heralds of a more interconnected world, social media has instead contributed to loneliness, low self-esteem, and the proliferation of harmful disinformation, Evan Malmgren writes. With 4.4 million users, Mastodon looks like Twitter, but rather than a single website, it's an open-source software platform that allows users to run self-hosted, "federated" social networks.
CNN —Brendan Fraser wasn’t a part of the 2017 reboot of “The Mummy,” but he has a theory about why the Tom Cruise led film wasn’t a blockbuster. “It is hard to make that movie,” Fraser told Variety. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”Fraser starred in the 1999 film, which kicked of the franchise and two sequels. These days he’s winning rave reviews and sparking Oscars chatter for his performance as an extremely obese man seeking to reconnect with his estranged daughter in the forthcoming film, “The Whale.”But Fraser said he would not be against returning for another “Mummy” film.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. For decades, only those selected and trained by the world's superpowers could journey to space. Then came Dennis Tito, a man who left NASA and built his fortune in finance – a fortune he used to become a space tourist. Two decades after Tito's first mission, the long-promised marketplace for space tourism is finally burgeoning. And yes, space tourism is currently only for the wealthy, and those lucky enough to ride along with them.
Tom Cruise could walk outside the International Space Station for an upcoming adventure movie. SpaceX was involved when it was first announced in 2020, though few details have been revealed since. "Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he's taking the world to space. Taking a rocket up to the [International Space Station] and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station." When reached for comment by Insider on SpaceX's involvement and the production budget, Universal said there weren't any new details to share.

Brendan Fraser, who starred in the original "Mummy" trilogy that kicked off with the 1999 film, says Cruise's reboot flopped because it wasn't "fun." Lourd, 61, isn't a household name, but he wields a stunning amount of influence in Hollywood. Lourd's Hollywood clients aren't just A-listers, they're A+-listers: Brad Pitt. An old-fashioned talent agent who loves discussing old movies and doesn't mind pointing out the flaws in his own clients' work, Lourd has become arguably the most powerful person in Hollywood. "He's one of the most powerful people in the history of Hollywood," said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. But Lourd's clients are such bankable stars that it's equally important for Hollywood executives to be friendly with him as it is beneficial for Lourd and CAA.
