The Quest for a Crocodile Dictionary
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( Anthony Ham | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A male saltwater crocodile approached a female saltie — as they’re known in Australia — in the same enclosure at Australia Zoo. But then in a change of heart that wasn’t what you’d expect from one of Australia’s most fearsome predators, he appeared to think better of it. “He went down under the water and started blowing bubbles at her,” said Sonnie Flores, a crocodile researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast who observed the interaction. It was almost like he was blowing her a kiss.”Trying to decipher what crocodiles like that one are saying is at the center of ongoing research by Ms. Flores and her colleagues to create the world’s first crocodile dictionary. If successful, it could even help prevent conflict between humans and crocodiles.

AUCKLAND, July 23 (Reuters) - The New Zealand team were in good spirits after a fire at their hotel forced them to evacuate briefly on Saturday night at the Women's World Cup, New Zealand Football CEO Andrew Pragnell said. New Zealand police apprehended a suspect in connection with the fire and the individual was facing arson and burglary charges, he said. Trained well today in the sunshine, which was welcome as well, and are looking in good shape," Pragnell told reporters on Sunday. "Another curveball in the last three days," he added, in an apparent reference to a shooting in which three people were killed near the Norway team hotel in Auckland hours ahead of the tournament kick-off match on Thursday. "If you put on a show like that and I think the World Cup coming to New Zealand, I think it's kind of just thrown football into people's faces," said defender C.J.

The world's largest asset manager said the move reflects the firm's emphasis on the Middle East as part of its long-term strategy. In August 2022, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar targeted BlackRock, putting the asset manager on a list of financial companies that "boycott energy companies." Washington, DC CNN —Florida is America’s inflation hotspot, thanks to a persistent problem with sky-high housing costs. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area has the highest inflation rate of metro areas with more than 2.5 million residents, with a 9% inflation rate for the 12 months ended in April. Urban Hawaii had the second lowest inflation rate at 2% — mirroring the Federal Reserve’s target for its preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index. A vexing inflation problem in the Sunshine StateIn Florida, the state’s growing population has been pushing up inflation — particularly via housing costs. Even though the Twin Cities’ inflation rate is currently the lowest among major cities, it might not feel that way to residents, Schipper said.

CNN —Florida vacations are back on, sans stinky seaweed. In April, the seaweed set a record, with scientists identifying 3 million tons of sargassum in the Caribbean Sea. The sargassum that lands on Florida beaches originates in the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean, Hu went on. Small amounts of the seaweed may still land on Florida beaches, but not in large enough quantities to present a problem, according to Hu. That's a big jump from August 2021, when Florida had zero cities that cracked the top 10. “You’re turning red!” The man reluctantly trudged toward the house. It wasn’t exactly a sunburn, or at least not the kind of burn his wife used to get that made her skin turn red and peel and hurt for days. His sunburn was itchy, not painful, and lasted an hour or two, sometimes a little more. He took the pills when he thought of it and slathered on the sunscreen some of the time, but he wasn’t sure it did much. After about 10 minutes he could see that he was getting pink, so he headed into the office.
