Christina Applegate was met with a standing ovation when she took to the Emmys stage as a presenter. Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021. But she says people don't need to clap every time she does something after her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis. "In essence, because of her I'm going to have a better quality of life," Applegate told British Vogue. In February 2023, the actor told the Los Angeles Times that year's SAG Awards would likely be the last awards show she'd attend as an actor.

There are looks, there are looks, and then there’s whatever Princess Poppy was serving at the 2024 Emmy Awards. RuPaul took the moment to advocate for LGBTQ rights in a speech so earnest one hardly noticed the green troll standing in the background. As for Princess Poppy, she’s had a mixed relationship with fame since being voted off Season 15 of the show last year. “I’m obsessed with Princess Poppy,” one X user said alongside a video of the drag queen dancing in full troll look during the event. “Princess Poppy you will always be famous,” one fan wrote.

Mayor Fletcher Bowron of Los Angeles welcomed people to the first Emmy Awards ceremony, which was held Jan. 25, 1949, at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Before there was a Peak TV era, before there were performances from Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman or Julia Louis-Dreyfus, there was Judy Splinters. “Judy Splinters,” a children’s television show hosted by a 20-year-old ventriloquist named Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet — wait for it — Judy Splinters, was nominated for the so-called most popular program at the very first Emmy Awards. All nominated shows had to have been filmed in Los Angeles, and the award show itself was only broadcast on a local station in Los Angeles. “It was so brand-new,” Dinsdale told The Los Angeles Times in 1998.

A US court said Spain could keep a priceless painting looted by the Nazis from its Jewish owner. The Spanish-backed nonprofit didn't know the painting was looted when it bought the collection, the judges said, giving it a stronger claim within Spanish law. Advertisement"Under California law the plaintiffs would recover the art, while under Spanish law they would not," they wrote. "Thus, Spanish law must apply." It argued that neither the Spanish state-backed nonprofit nor Thyssen-Bornemisza knew the painting was stolen when he bought it.

From putting greens and par-three holes to full-blown course replicas, the sport is increasingly taking up residence in gardens and backyards as golf enthusiasts of all levels look to shorten their travel time to the tee. California in particular is especially prone to drought, with state officials encouraging its citizens to cut their water usage. Yet “the number one” factor that can hike prices for larger greens, Nappi explains, is — ironically — drainage. Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

Another billionaire is having a hard time with his newspaper. That's because the LA Times is owned by billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, and it is losing money; even though Soon-Shiong is a billionaire, even billionaires have limits. Asked for comment, an LA Times spokesperson said that company leaders "don't generally make forward-looking statements about staffing levels and aren't able to comment further at this time." In 2021, The Wall Street Journal reported that Soon-Shiong was considering selling the LA Times itself , but Soon-Shiong said that was not the case. Netflix released a first-of-its-kind report showing viewership hours for titles in the first half of 2023. It shows why Netflix is planning on investing billions into Korean content in the coming years. Among the thousands of titles, Korean entertainment was a major standout. Korean actors want better compensation — namely, residuals on par with United States actors under SAG-AFTRA, per the LA Times. But the numbers also underscore local workers' labor concerns — and what Netflix could stand to lose without them.

Orchid, a startup that tests embryos for genetic diseases, has just raised $12 million. "The way that IVF and embryo screening works today is the amount of information available is really limited," Orchid CEO and cofounder Noor Siddiqui said. Genetic testing has been around for years, but it has been usually limited in the diseases it can identify, which include cystic fibrosis, Bloomberg reported. Orchid produces reports with two types of genetic testing: monogenic and polygenic. The cost of the test depends on the number of embryos that Orchid tests.

Officials encouraged people to switch to public transit to alleviate bad traffic from road closures. For native Angelenos and the millions of visitors who've traveled to the area, Los Angeles car culture is simply a way of life. According to The Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority saw a 10% bump in ridership on the E Line light rail train that runs through downtown Los Angeles on the first two workdays after the incident. While it's too early to know if public transit ridership will be up in November, a reimagined vision of traversing Los Angeles has long been overdue. I had committed myself to quitting cocaine, which was my second addiction, the first being years of amphetamines. It would be a nice, clean story if I said I never did drugs again. But addiction is never nice and clean. I want to tell you something about addiction: no matter who it is or what substance that person is hooked on, loneliness is at its root. “Nobody wanted to be famous more than me,” Mr. Perry said at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in April.
