[1/2] U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen participates in a discussion at the annual Freedman's Bank Forum at the Treasury Department in Washington, U.S., October 4, 2022. That raised speculation that Japan and the United States might be at odds over currency policy, which would make it difficult to intervene further. "Treasury Secretary Yellen respects Japan's stance of not confirming whether or not we conducted intervention, so we appreciate that." Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki also said on Tuesday that Japan was closely in touch with the United States and that both have reaffirmed the Group of Seven agreement on currencies. Since Japan's yen-buying intervention on Sept. 22, the authorities have kept mum on whether they had entered the currency market, although sources have said stealth intervention was conducted last Friday and this Monday.
LONDON, Oct 25 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called for more streamlined decision-making in Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, addressing a new Coordination Council designed to boost support for an invasion now in its ninth month. Putin set up the new council last week as he imposed martial law in four partly-occupied regions of Ukraine that he has declared part of Russia, where his forces have suffered several defeats by a resurgent Ukrainian army. "Administrative reform is impossible without broader coordination between all departments: the economic bloc, the security bloc, the regions." Even before Putin started a "partial mobilisation" of hundreds of thousands of men last month for the Ukraine campaign, soldiers were complaining on social media of being woefully underequipped. The chairman of the new council, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, told Putin: "We need to intensify work to increase the production of personal protective equipment.
That loyal inner circle has not only strengthened Xi’s hold on power – but also tightened his grip over China’s future. In the eyes of Xi, China is closer than ever to achieving its dream of “national rejuvenation” and reclaiming its rightful place in the world. What he decides to do – and how he goes about doing it – will have a profound impact on the world. Under Xi, Beijing has ramped up military pressure on Taiwan, sending warplanes and conducting military drills near the island. Xi continues to back a costly zero-Covid policy that keeps borders heavily restricted and regularly sends its cities into lockdown – dragging down China’s economic growth.

That means Tokyo will avoid intervening in a way that appears as if it is defending a certain yen level.
"The Hezbollah leadership scrutinized the understanding line by line before agreeing to it," said one of the sources familiar with the group's thinking. Two Hezbollah lawmakers told Reuters the group was open to the idea of a deal as a pathway to alleviate some of Lebanon’s economic woes. At one point, Hezbollah conveyed its frustration at the slow pace of the talks to Hochstein via Ibrahim, the Western source said. A U.S. official told Reuters Hezbollah had nearly "killed the deal with their provocative rhetoric and actions threatening war". "Once the pipes are in the water, war becomes a long way away," said a source familiar with Hezbollah's thinking.
Fox 's potential reunification with News Corporation could actually be a set back from the stock's value, Credit Suisse warned. He said the potential combination of Fox and News Corp. would be a bad investment — and even just the idea could hurt the stock. "The pivot seems a tacit admission of challenges for Fox," he said in a Sunday note to clients. "Even if this merger does not ultimately come to fruition, the investment backdrop for Fox has been altered." He said a stock merger could take place, or one could rein if there's a perceived discount involved.
Xi Jinping has silver linings for rest of world

LONDON, Oct 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A third term for Xi Jinping would risk a cold war, or even a hot one. Until recently, most analysts agreed it was only a matter of time before China’s economy, which was three-quarters the size of America’s in dollar terms last year, became the world’s largest. Schlumberger is passing draft notices on to some of its 9,000 Russian employees, Reuters reported. Some workers have begun receiving draft notices ordering them to join the Russian army, according to a report by the news agency. The BHRRC told Reuters that Roche and Novo Nordisk, two other non-Russian companies, had requested military exemptions for their employees. "The local leadership team is managing an incredibly complex and difficult situation," a Schlumberger spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement. The US-based spokesperson added that managers were obliged "to comply with local laws and regulations, especially when failure to do so could create additional risk for our local employees."
Human rights groups are watching how the company responds to the concerns. Schlumberger suspended new investments and technology deployment in Russia, but unlike some of its peers and customers, decided to remain. Schlumberger leaves decision-making on Russia employment policies to local managers, the U.S.-based spokesperson said. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre requested information from Schlumberger and other non-Russian companies with operations in the country on their handling of the mobilization. Schlumberger rivals Baker Hughes (BKR.O) and Halliburton (HAL.N) are selling or have sold their oilfield services units in Russia.
Allied with the troubled call-up of hundreds of thousands of troops, each new development helped fuel a sense of panic in Russia. Putin said Monday’s deadly strikes were revenge, though Kyiv claimed they had been planned well in advance. “The attacks have not degraded Ukrainian military capabilities and are fundamentally irrelevant to the fighting in the northeast and south of Ukraine,” Tuck said. Sustaining such attacks will require a constant supply of rockets, which Moscow is increasingly running out of, military analysts said. Already, Kyiv says Russia has been using more “kamikaze” drones, procured from Iran, as a cheaper and more dispensable alternative.

A small group of Los Angeles city leaders faced shame and castigation after an audio recording of racist remarks at a private meeting surfaced Sunday. The rush to flash pro-cop credentials shows that Democrats anticipated a fresh wave of Republican attacks on crime and policing that are landing in House, Senate and state-level races. During the 2020 election, then-President Donald Trump warned voters that Democrats would be soft on crime and endanger communities. His aides said that the line of attack motivated base Republican voters and helped swing voters — particularly Latino voters in Florida and Texas — in the GOP’s direction. But some Democrats have decided the best answer this year is silence: Polls show crime just isn't a good issue for their party. Many Democratic candidates continue to focus on policy areas where more voters trust Democrats than Republicans to do a better job, including abortion, education and protecting democracy.

It was “the most prudent, or most low-key statement in years” issued by Xi on their strategic relationship, Shi said. Under Xi, China has forged ever closer ties with Russia. Six days later, in a desperate escalation of the devastating war, Putin announced a “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens in a televised speech, and even raised the specter of using nuclear weapons. Both leaders share a deep suspicion and hostility toward the United States, which they believe is bent on holding China and Russia down. The main factor driving the strategic alignment between Russia and China is the perception of threats from the United States, said Hart with CSIS.

In recent months, China has offered Russia tacit support and stepped up economic assistance to its neighbor, boosting bilateral trade to a record high. But Kewalramani said the SCO could provide a "space (for India) to engage with China and Russia."
