This should enable the automaker to reap tens of billions of dollars in additional profit, according to Reuters estimates, before it shifts completely to zero-emission electric vehicles in 2035. It never said when exactly it would stop producing gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, though suppliers and analysts expected it would be well before 2035. GM plans to run its heavy-duty combustion pickups at both plants until 2035, according to AFS, which provides data and analysis to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. The automaker will gradually reduce annual production of its big SUVs in Arlington as it begins to introduce new electric companions, starting around mid-decade. By 2030, AFS forecasts Arlington production could drop to around 200,000 vehicles, which could still produce at least $2 billion in pretax earnings.

It's only the second wolverine seen in California in the last 100 years. Wolverines are native to California but have essentially been extinct from the state since the 1920s. One wolverine was spotted in the state from 2008 to 2018, beginning in the Tahoe National Forest, officials said. The animal has been spotted twice in the Inyo National Forest and once in Yosemite National Park. The species — the largest terrestrial member of the weasel family — is listed as threatened under the California Endangered Species Act.

Late last year, Fayçal Ziraoui, a French-Moroccan business consultant, was at his home in the Paris suburbs scrolling through satellite pictures of the Sierra Nevada when he came across an image that startled him. It looked to him like the symbol that the Zodiac killer used on his correspondence a half-century ago. In December, Ziraoui searched satellite images of the Sierra after believing that a postcard and a cipher sent by the Zodiac killer pointed to those coordinates. Ziraoui spent the winter counting down the days until the snow melted, and in mid-May, he flew to San Francisco. It’s a four-hour drive from the Bay Area, the last dozen miles on rough dirt roads blocked at times by the remnants of collapsed trees killed in the 2014 King fire.

[1/5] Volunteer David Palmer takes part in a broadcast burn in advance of wildfire season near Blodgett Forest Research Station in Georgetown, California, U.S., May 20, 2023. Teaching locals is exactly what Susie Kocher is hoping to accomplish through the El Dorado Amador Prescribed Burn Association. Founded in 2021, the association teaches private landowners about prescribed burns, including how to plan and carry them out safely. California last year launched a strategic plan for wildfire and forest resilience with the aim of expanding prescribed burns to 400,000 acres annually by 2025. The Saturday class for two dozen volunteers – mostly college students and a few private landowners - at the Blodgett Forest Research Station west of Lake Tahoe turned out just as the experts had hoped.

In cities both small and large, some locals are calling out short-term rentals for making housing more expensive. The same question is perplexing local governments and fueling impassioned locals to weigh in: What should we do about Airbnb-style, short-term rentals? Jacob Boomsma/Getty ImagesFor Bozeman Tenants United, it's simple math: Bozeman homes should be occupied by Bozeman residents first, before out-of-towners. Formed in 2020, Bozeman Tenants United surveyed Bozeman residents on the most pressing issues in local housing and landed on short-term rentals. Fire Thunder said the increase of short-term rentals and vacation-owned properties is just one harbinger of a concerning trend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.—Charlene Crandall’s mobile home has taken a beating from all the snow this year: broken window, leaks in three rooms, a bent carport. She said she prevented even more damage by climbing atop the roof after every big snowfall and spending hours shoveling.
Prosecutor Chris Conroy said: "The defendant Donald J. Trump falsified New York business records in order to conceal an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election and other violations of election laws." SOCIAL MEDIA POSTSProsecutors during the arraignment said Trump made a series of social media posts, including one threatening "death and destruction" if he was charged. "They can't beat us at the ballot box so they try to beat us through the law," Trump said. The false records included invoices from Cohen, entries in a ledger for Trump maintained by the Trump Organization, and check stubs, according to the indictment. Surveyors from the California Department of Water Resources measured a snow field in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on Monday. California’s snowpack ranks as the biggest in at least 40 years, giving much needed relief to crippling drought but leaving many rural communities under threat of major flooding when the frozen bounty melts. Surveyors from the California Department of Water Resources on Monday conducted manual measurements of a snow field near Lake Tahoe, where they said the 126.5 inches was among the deepest since the hand tallies were first carried out more than a century ago. The water equivalent was 54 inches.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social profile shortly after arriving in New York from Florida on Monday, urging supporters to donate to his campaign. The arraignment, where Trump will be in court to hear charges and have a chance to enter a plea, was planned for 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) on Tuesday. Citing a single source briefed on Tuesday's arraignment procedures, Yahoo said none of the charges against Trump were misdemeanors. PROTESTS AND POPULARITYPolice over the weekend began erecting barricades near Trump Tower - where Trump arrived on Monday after flying in from Florida - and the Manhattan Criminal Court building, with demonstrations expected at both sites on Tuesday. On the Manhattan case, Trump in 2018 initially disputed knowing anything about the payment to Daniels.
But this year's abundant Sierra snowpack also poses a severe risk of renewed flooding to parts of California, especially the lower San Joaquin Valley, during the spring thaw, according to state Department of Water Resources (DWR) officials. More widely, however, electronic readings from 130 snow sensors throughout California showed the statewide snowpack's water equivalent at 61.1 inches, or 237% of average, tying the record statewide average level set in April of 1952. "This year's result will go down as one of the largest snowpack years on record in California," said Sean de Guzman, manager of the DWR snow survey8 and water supply forecasting unit. Guzman said California's reservoirs, severely drained just months ago, have all been replenished to more than 100% of average statewide. Long-term drought conditions in the Colorado River watershed will continue to impact millions of residents of Southern California residents, the DWR said.
Trump, the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges, is due to be arraigned, fingerprinted and photographed at the downtown Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday. A court official said the arraignment is planned for 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT) on Tuesday. Trump then will return to Florida and deliver remarks at Mar-a-Lago at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday (0015 GMT on Wednesday), his office said. Other courtrooms on the courthouse's higher floors will be shut down ahead of the arraignment as part of the security precautions, a court official said. U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted an invitation on Sunday to join her at a protest near the courthouse on Tuesday, saying "They’re not coming after President Trump, they’re coming after us, he’s just in their way."

A new study found some of the forests in California's Sierra Nevada no longer match their climate. About 20% of conifers in the Sierra Nevada are experiencing "vegetation climate mismatch." The lead author said the trees are "cheating death" but that they won't survive a major disturbance. When trees or other plants are no longer suited to the environment they are in, it's called a "vegetation climate mismatch." The conifers of the Sierra Nevada include ponderosa pine, sugar pine, and Douglas fir.

Mylène Garot loved being on the water and wanted to start a boat-rental business in Miami. Garot used her savings to purchase a boat and started renting it on Boatsetter, an Airbnb for boats. I was Googling platforms similar to Airbnb and found Boatsetter, where boat owners can list their boats for people to rent. My husband was a boat captain and managed property — it seemed pretty perfect. The revenue was growing, but a private renter, renting outside Boatsetter, damaged one of the boats in September 2020.
Yet the average sticker for base models, adjusted for inflation, has actually gone down a little — even as consumers have shifted from sedans to more expensive SUVs. That’s good news for drivers willing to go no-frills: If you don’t want to pay lots of a new car, you don’t have to. It has a base price of $15,730. These base price models may not make much money, if any, for automakers. The average price of a GMC Sierra 2500 HD, as sold, is now double the base price.
