CNN —Beaches in the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa have been closed off after filthy waters from a collapsed dam washed downstream, posing a “genuine threat” to local residents, authorities say. Russia appears to have doubled the number of trained dolphins defending its Black Sea fleet. The dolphins at the naval base in Sevastopol are trained to detect Ukrainian special forces divers. Satellite imagery at the time captured by Maxar Technologies shows two pens containing the trained dolphins. This comes after several drone attacks targeting Russia's ships in the area, as Ukrainian forces launched their recent counteroffensive in the long-running conflict. The Black Sea peninsula was invaded by Russian forces and illegally annexed by Putin in 2014.

Juvenile white sharks grow up to become great white sharks, known for being dangerous to humans. Why juvenile white sharks swim near humans so oftenFrom the researchers' drone footage, it may look like juvenile white sharks like to hang around swimmers and surfers. The shallow water near the beaches "is actually the natural habitat the juvenile white sharks use. Why juvenile white sharks don't typically attack humansAlthough great white sharks are infamous for attacking humans, the actual number of attacks is low. However, it doesn't mean the risk of a bite from a juvenile great white is zero — it's just very low.

“Larry began ‘Swimmers’ with a very literal fear of deep water and of drowning,” the art historian Philip Gefter writes in the book. Gradually the photographer pushed himself from the shallow end into the deep end, toward images he described as “excessively physical, sensual and painterly” even as their abstractness made him feel, in Gefter’s words, “self-conscious and exposed” — presumably like the swimmers themselves.

CNN —In the world of water sports, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has been riding a wave of popularity in recent years. In 2016, he founded SipaBoards in Kamnik, Slovenia, and created the world’s first jet-propelled, self-inflating paddleboard. Although electric and self-inflating boards exist separately, Sitar’s design was the first to incorporate both features in one board. It has an easy-to-remove cover so you can access the batteries, recharge the board, and hit the water,” Sitar said. “We want to create a social network for electric water sports, where people can share their experiences, create new paddle routes, and connect with other riders,” Sitar said.
Here's what to do if you run into a bear, a shark, an orca, or other potentially dangerous mammals. Here's what you should do if you encounter any of these apex predators and how you can avoid an attack. REUTERS/Jim UrquhartThere are two kinds of bears you're likely to run into while outdoors in North America, depending on where you are: grizzly bears and black bears. The park service says you should try to find a safe place like a car or building. Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone, one of the country's most visited national parks, than any other animal, according to the National Park Service.
Yulia the endangered seal did not seem fazed by the rockets from Gaza, let alone the missiles heading in the opposite direction. It was the fourth of five days of fighting between the Israeli military and Palestinian militants in Gaza. Two days earlier, air-raid sirens on the same shoreline had sent swimmers and sunbathers rushing to municipal bomb shelters. Now, an endangered Mediterranean monk seal — one of an estimated 700 in the world — had landed on an Israeli shore for the first known time since 2010. “A miracle,” said Ruthy Yahel, a marine ecologist at Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority who helped watch over Yulia this week.
England’s rivers and coastlines have long endured a foul problem — an astounding release of untreated sewage by water companies, some of it illegal, which critics say has sickened swimmers and polluted the country’s critical ecosystems. “It’s disgusting when you’re in the water and you see and smell sewage,” said Josh Harris, a spokesman for Surfers Against Sewage, a charity that monitors pollution and is among several groups leading an intensifying public outcry against the contamination of England’s waterways. Private water and sewage companies in England on Thursday admitted that they had not done enough to address the outpouring of sewage and announced a plan totaling 10 billion pounds, or about $12.4 billion, to modernize the country’s sewers. Last year alone, the companies sent sewage into rivers and seas for more than 1.75 million hours, amounting to 301,091 spills overall, or an average of 825 a day, according to government data, a slight reduction compared with the previous year largely because of drier weather, not preventive action from water companies, England’s Environment Agency said.
Mexico increased their World Cup medal tally to four on Monday at the competition in Egypt, having travelled there thanks to the support of businessman Carlos Slim. With three golds and a bronze, the North American country finished second in the medal table behind Spain. Their first medal success came in the Mixed Team Technical event on Saturday, when a statement from the government praising the swimmers raised eyebrows after the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE) cut support from the team. "The Mexican artistic swimming team's historic participation in the World Cup in Egypt was a golden one. loadingCONADE head Ana Guevara announced the cut in funding in January after global governing body World Aquatics did not recognise the president of the Mexican Swimming Federation, Kiril Todorov, who is facing a trial for embezzlement.
With their precision manufacturing, specially sourced materials, and exceptional craftsmanship, Rolex watches have never come cheap, but neither were they out of financial reach for 1960s working professionals in search of perfect timekeeping and technical innovation. "Back then, anybody could afford a Rolex," Hess told Insider. Dealers would buy luxury watches in Switzerland to carry across the border and sell in Italy. That reputation has helped Rolex crush the competition with a quarter of the luxury watch market — more than double that of runner-up Omega. "They all buy the little wannabe Rolex brands in the beginning and finally, when they achieve success, they buy that Rolex."
Simon Nellist, 35, a diving instructor, was killed by a great white shark off Sydney in 2022. A report has classified Nellist's death as a "provoked incident." The International Shark Attack File (ISAF), a global database of all known shark attacks, has now classified Nellist's death as a "provoked incident," which refers to a situation in which a human unintentionally or intentionally initiates contact with a shark. "A big great white, that's a great white, oh no, that's insane, the person's still there." Barcroft Media/Getty ImagesThe Australian Shark Incident Database, unlike ISAF, has recorded Nellist's death as an "unprovoked incident."
April 22 (Reuters) - Olympic gold medallist swimmer Kyle Chalmers said he hopes that by speaking out about his struggles over mental health he can inspire the next generation to follow suit. Chalmers, who won Olympic 100 metres freestyle gold in Rio as a teenager and took silver in Tokyo in 2021, took a mental health break last year after a row about his decision to race at the world championships. Last month, triple Olympic breaststroke champion Adam Peaty, Chalmers's friend, said he would skip the British swimming championships to focus on his mental health. Asked if his open discussions about mental health may have influenced other swimmers like Peaty, Chalmers told Sydney's Daily Telegraph: "I'd like to hope so." Chalmers will next set his sights on this year's world swimming championships, which are scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan, from July 14 to 30.

April 21 (Reuters) - Russia's Evgeniia Chikunova shattered the 200m breaststroke world record with a time of two minutes 17.55 seconds on the final day of the Russian swimming championships in Kazan on Friday. A World Aquatics spokesman said Chikunova's time "will follow the World Aquatics world record process of approval that any other world record follows. "Only when the necessary steps are taken and verified can a world record then be ratified." Russian and Belarusian swimmers are banned from competing internationally due to the war in Ukraine, but World Aquatics this month established a task force to explore their return as neutrals. read moreThis year's world swimming championships are scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14-30.

Exercise Can Be the Best Antidepressant

Psychologist Susan Pinker explores new discoveries in the science of human nature. Read previous columns here. One of the highlights of my pandemic workweek was the Zoom workout I did with a dozen fellow swimmers once we lost access to our pool. Most aspects of my life were upended, but the 7:45 a.m. home exercise session was a constant: a warm-up, two sets of resistance exercises designed by our loyal coach, then stretching and gabbing. None of us wanted to give up this routine when restrictions eased, and we’re still at it.
Naveron Lesch gave up working on traditional fishing boats to work as shark spotter in South Africa. If we sight a shark, we'll radio the spotter down on the beach and, if necessary, set off the shark siren to clear the water. If it's my day for a double shift, I'll move down to the beach and relieve the beach spotter. So you have to know shark behavior and decide how close the shark is going to get to the people in the water. The biggest shark I've seen was at Muizenberg Beach about five years ago, when I had trainees spotting with me.
Great white shark numbers are increasing off the coast of Southern California's beaches. Adult white sharks can reach 12-20 feet, but they rarely come close to the shoreline. California banned actively targeting white sharks in 1994, as well as certain fishing nets that often entrapped the sharks. Warning signs for shark sightings remain in Long Beach, California, on May 16, 2017, where Great White sharks and their pups have been sighted regularly off southern California beaches. Researchers emphasized it is still safe to swim along the Southern California coast, which sharks have historically inhabited longer than us.
Film offers close-up of Ukraine's bloody Eastern Front

[1/3] Directors Vitaly Mansky and Yehven Titarenko speak about the movie 'Eastern Front' during a Reuters interview during the 73rd Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, February 22, 2023. "I think people usually get some romantic ideas about war from the books, from movies," Yevhen Titarenko, a Ukrainian filmmaker who co-directed the film, told Reuters. The film premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday, the first anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, celebrating the resilience of the Ukrainian people while providing a grisly portrait of the devastation of war. Lviv-born filmmaker Vitaly Mansky co-directed the film with Titarenko, providing additional scenes recorded in Western Ukraine. "The message is not to give anybody the chance to think they can hide from this war," Mansky said.
The US Navy has been training dolphins and sea lions to detect undersea threats since the 1960s. "Those mammals were very real and very scary," a former US Navy SEAL officer told Insider. The program tested out a number of animals but found dolphins and sea lions to be the best suited for the mission. The US military wasn't the only one using dolphins and sea lions to protect its warships and ports. BUD/S course instructors "have a sadistic tendency to scare the shit out of students before open-water swims," the former Navy SEAL officer said.
SAN FRANCISCO—A year ago, Adele Gower used to cherish daily 90-minute swims in the frigid Bay here. Now she can only stand it for 30 minutes. She abandoned her wetsuit after being shamed by fellow San Francisco Bay swimmers—a peculiar, zealous breed, who jump off boats near Alcatraz Island and swim with seals in the city’s Aquatic Park.

Archbishop Peter Comensoli, the Archbishop of Melbourne, said Pell had died from heart complications following hip surgery. An Australian appeals court ruling in 2020 quashed convictions that Pell sexually assaulted two choir boys in the 1990s. Pell took pride in having set up one of the world's first schemes to compensate victims of child sexual abuse in Melbourne. The inquiry, known as a Royal Commission, began in 2013 a five-year investigation into child sex abuse in the Catholic Church and other institutions.
