Reuters —One person was killed and 10 others were injured on Friday in the southern Turkish province of Antalya after a cable car cabin collided with a broken pole, the interior ministry said on Saturday. Twenty-four cabins were stranded in the air at 5:23 p.m. (14:23 GMT) on Friday. Sixteen hours later, more than 60 people were still stranded in the remaining nine cabins in the air, the ministry said. In a statement on social media platform X, the interior ministry said seven helicopters and more than 500 rescue workers were carrying out rescue efforts. A video released by the interior ministry showed rescue personnel tied to safety ropes climbing into cabins.

Vcg | Visual China Group | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China's commercial property sector is seeing pockets of demand amid an overall real estate slump. Commercial real estate, which includes office buildings and shopping malls, makes up just a fraction of China's overall property market. Sales for both commercial and residential properties had fallen for much of last year, according to Wind. Covid-19 restrictions on movement had also cut demand for China's commercial property, in line with global trends. China's economy, however, took longer than expected to rebound from the pandemic, amid a broader slump in the property market.

Archaeologists working at the world-famous site have uncovered a banqueting hall with black-painted walls covered with frescoes of mythological characters associated with the Trojan War. The ornately decorated room provided an elegant setting for entertainment or conversation during banquets, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which oversees the site, said. An earthquake and an eclipse weren’t the only natural rarities that happened in New York City this past week. Did you hear about the sasquatch in Central Park? That’s because the sasquatch was a costume and his stroll through the park was a publicity push for the new film from the brothers David and Nathan Zellner. Opening in New York on Friday, the movie spends a year in the wild with a sasquatch pack — a male and female (Nathan Zellner and Riley Keough) and two younger sasquatches (Jesse Eisenberg and Christophe Zajac-Denek) — as they eat, have sex, fight predators and reckon with death. Droll but big-hearted, the movie sits at the intersection of the ad campaign for Jack Link’s beef jerky, the 1987 comedy “Harry and the Hendersons” and a 1970s nature documentary, down to the hippie-vibe soundtrack.

Then you get to collect Social Security, on top of drawing from the nest egg you've built up over your career. In a recent CNBC survey, over half of respondents in the US said they thought they were behind on saving and planning for retirement. The burden of saving for retirement — and the anxiety that comes with it — is a fairly new phenomenon. There's nothing irrational about being nervous that you won't have enough money to live on to last your whole life. AdvertisementIt's not likely that Social Security will just dry up — Congress could increase the retirement age or up the funding for the program.

Thursday in the Park With Bigfoot
  + stars: | 2024-04-05 | by ( Erik Piepenburg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If you were near the Ramble in Central Park on Thursday afternoon, you might have thought you were in a “Planet of the Apes”-themed episode of “What Would You Do?”Because you may have witnessed a 6-foot-7 longhaired sasquatch slowly traversing tall rocks and promenading through thickets, grunting at the sky and scaring children and dogs silly. But what you saw wasn’t Bigfoot. The sasquatch sighting was a gorilla — sorry, guerrilla — publicity effort for “Sasquatch Sunset,” a new film directed by the brothers David and Nathan Zellner that opens in New York on April 12. Conceptually, the promotional shenanigans in Central Park were in line with the film’s irreverent sensibility. A mix of bro comedy, National Geographic documentary and emotional family drama, it stars Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg as members of a pack of kind-eyed sasquatches who brave life and death in the wilderness.

CNN —When the total solar eclipse traces a path across Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8, spectators can anticipate a multitude of awe-inspiring moments. For those living outside of the path of totality, a crescent-shaped partial eclipse, rather than a total eclipse, will be the main event. A partial solar eclipse is seen between clouds from Socorro in Sao Paulo, Brazil on October 14, 2023. The diamond ring effect is seen during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, in St. Louis, Missouri. How to Use Up Those Easter Eggs
  + stars: | 2024-03-31 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I had a lovely run of Brooklyn sandwiches going, before work, school and Easter intervened to send me back to the kitchen. A colossal roast beef, fried eggplant and mozzarella hero from Defonte’s in Red Hook, with hot peppers, gravy and mayonnaise. (A few years ago, I ginned up a recipe for the roast beef hero from Defonte’s.) But today is Easter, and not really a day for sandwiches — unless they’re ham ones on little potato rolls, with strong mustard, to eat in a side yard in the chill while children run around looking for hidden eggs. I want to make deviled eggs (above) to celebrate the holiday puckishly, or maybe a big egg salad to serve in lettuce cups.

Randy Shropshire/Getty ImagesResearch shows that late-night eating prompts the body to overproduce stomach acid. This is advice some muscle-builders and other researchers disagree with — they say drinking protein shakes at night can help with muscle growth. Advertisement"If we eat a high protein load late in the night, then our stomach produces disproportionately more acid to digest that," Panda said.

So it makes sense that James Goldstein’s house, hovering over a canyon atop Beverly Hills, Calif., is one of the most strange, fascinating and perplexing architectural projects in the world. Goldstein, 84, a controversial figure who made his fortune investing in mobile-home parks in California, may be familiar to you. He’s that leathery-skinned, frizzy-haired guy always sitting courtside at N.B.A. “The word subtle doesn’t exist for me,” Goldstein said, dressed in all-black tennis gear and a palm tree-emblazoned black jacket. He’s sitting on the sprawling lower terrace of his home’s recently-completed (for now), three-level addition, which is a separate compound overlooking the towers of Century City and, beyond that, the glinting bend of the Pacific Coast.

The woman herself, she explained, had moved to Eleuthera, a 10-minute water taxi ride away, where the hoi polloi rarely come, apparently. Nick Oxford | ReutersSenior U.S. lawmakers believe the International Energy Agency has "strayed from its core mission" of safeguarding energy security and has emerged as a "cheerleader" for the green transition. "We would argue that in recent years the IEA has been undermining energy security by discouraging sufficient investment in energy supplies — specifically, oil, natural gas, and coal. Consequently, the IEA must conduct its energy security mission in an objective manner. "It should disturb you that biased parties are exploiting the IEA's forecasts and other products to advocate for policies that undermine energy security." The IEA on Thursday confirmed receipt of the letter to CNBC and stressed that its mandate remains maintaining energy security and accelerating clean energy transitions.
