A man fatally shot his former partner Thursday while she was on the phone with a 911 operator, telling authorities the couple's marriage had recently ended, police in Texas said. Lewisville police investigate what they described as a domestic violence murder-suicide that took place before dawn Thursday. "A short time later, while the female was on the phone with 911, multiple gunshots could be heard, and the call went silent," the department said. Witnesses who dialed 911 reported that the man shot a woman multiple times before he died by suicide, the department said. If you or someone you know is facing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence hotline for help at (800) 799-SAFE (7233), or go to www.thehotline.org for more.

CNN —Poor mental health among teens in the United States was a concern before the Covid-19 pandemic, and major disruptions to school and social life since early 2020 have only exacerbated the situation. A new study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that most adolescents experienced negative events during the Covid-19 pandemic – and those experiences were linked to higher prevalence of poor mental health and suicide attempts. About 1 of every 13 adolescents (8%) reported experiencing four or more adverse events during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Youth are in crisis,” Kathleen Ethier, director of the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health, said in March. Approaching the mental health of teens and youth is nuanced and should be different from the way adults are treated, he said.
The recommendation from the independent panel of experts applies to children who aren't showing any signs or symptoms of a mental health problem. The health panel's new guidance represents a final set of recommendations for mental health screening for children. The problem, however, is that there is a dearth of mental health professionals trained to help such children. A second report found that emergency room visits related to children’s mental health rose dramatically in 2020, compared with 2019. But Pbert said that true mental health problems in children can result in excessive behavior changes.
CNN —For the first time, the US Preventive Services Task Force has recommended screening for anxiety in children 8 and older. In its final recommendations, published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA, the task force also urged screening for depression in children 12 and older, consistent with recommendations from 2016. The members considered recommendations on screening for suicide risk in children and adolescents but said there’s not enough evidence on its harms and benefits. Last month, the task force posted draft recommendations that for the first time said adults under 65 be screened for anxiety. “It is not coincidental that the USPSTF considered evidence for suicide and depression screening in the same updated Evidence Report and Systematic Review,” he wrote.
Actor Constance Wu opened up about her suicide attempt in a tearful conversation on Jada Pinkett Smith’s show “Red Table Talk,” divulging what led to the incident. Wu said she felt like she couldn’t speak up about the harassment. Nadia Kim, a professor of sociology and of Asian and Asian American studies at Loyola Marymount University, said on the panel that the lack of Asian American representation makes it harder. “Because there are so few Asian American stars, there is incredible pressure put on these actors, like Constance Wu, to be perfect,” she said. Students across Virginia protested Tuesday in response to new guidelines putting restrictions on transgender students in the state’s public schools. “Trans students are students just like everybody else. "While students exercise their free speech today, we’d note that these policies state that students should be treated with compassion and schools should be free from bullying and harassment." Students have begun to walk out of Northern Virginia schools in protest of Gov. "When Barbara Johns walked out, people told her she should have stayed put too," Virginia state Del.
The task force defines anxiety disorders as "characterized by greater duration or intensity of a stress response over everyday events." Screening tools already availableThe anxiety recommendation would apply to adults 19 and older who do not have a diagnosed mental health disorder. The statements are for anxiety screening in adults over the age of 65 and for screening of suicide risk in adults. The task force members also hope the recommendations will elevate awareness about the need for mental health screening and treatment. Shares of Bed Bath & Beyond were down in premarket trading Tuesday after the struggling retailer’s chief financial officer died over the weekend. The stock was down more than 15% as investors weighed the company’s leadership crisis after Gustavo Arnal’s death. The loss comes after the company recently eliminated some executive positions, including chief operating officer, as part of its efforts to win back investor confidence and customers. Bed Bath & Beyond is operating under an interim chief executive, Sue Gove, after the company’s former leader, Mark Tritton, was ousted by the board in June. Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond in 2020 from London-based cosmetics company Avon after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A Bed Bath & Beyond executive died from an apparent suicide after falling from the downtown Manhattan luxury skyscraper where he lived, according to New York's medical examiner’s office. A Sunday statement from the retailer said that "the entire Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. organization is profoundly saddened by this shocking loss." Last year, Arnal took home $2.9 million as CFO of Bed Bath & Beyond, including $775,000 in salary and the rest in stock awards, according to InsiderTrades.com. Last month, he sold more than 42,500 shares of company stock worth more than a million dollars, according to the website MarketBeat. Bed Bath & Beyond's stock took a major hit last month after an influential investor sold all of his nearly 7.8 million shares.

“It’s so fulfilling being here, seeing this,” said Savy Dunlevy, a 23-year-old gender nonconforming audio engineer. Sporting a tapered bob cut and blue blazer, Savy stood last Thursday on the back terrace of House of Yes, the cavernous warehouse-turned-disco in Bushwick, and thought on the awkwardness of an earlier prom . You’re going to be okay.’”Savy and hundreds of others had gathered in Bushwick for “Pride Prom,” a revisionist soiree thrown on June 13 by the dating app Hinge in celebration of World Pride 2019. The 21-and-over celebration served the dual purpose of raising money for It Gets Better, the L.G.B.T.Q. youth suicide prevention nonprofit, and affording community members a chance to relive a possibly painful moment of self suppression.
