Read previewThe rush of companies leaving California for Texas is becoming a downright stampede. Chevron, which has called California home since 1879 when it began as the Pacific Coast Oil Company, is the latest. California accused Chevron and other energy giants of downplaying the risks of fossil fuels. Chevron joins a raft of other companies that have pulled up stakes in California and left for Texas, which had 52 Fortune 500 companies in 2024. And it had 55 Fortune 500 companies in the magazine's latest tally.

Jan is the first person in Australia to be convicted of forced marriage since it was criminalized in 2013. Sakina Muhammad Jan was the first person convicted under Australia's forced marriage laws. Some of the measures borrow from forced-marriage laws in Britain, where hundreds of people take out protection orders each year to thwart an impending forced marriage. Other countries such as France, Canada and Germany also have specific laws against forced marriage. A month before Jan’s sentencing, the immigration minister circulated a directive specifically naming the crime of forced marriage as serious enough to warrant the removal of a visa.

Sweaty startups are blue-collar businesses, often in unglamorous or laborious fields like septic services, car washes, or lawn care. It's what your grandparents would've just called a small business, but it was a tongue-in-cheek answer to the Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurship being glorified in culture at that time. Still, some small businesses look to private equity to scale their businesses in different markets, even if that means overhauling operations in some cases. "Small businesses partner with private-equity firms because they provide access to capital and organizational support to help companies grow," Drew Maloney, the council's president and CEO, told BI. CNN —Ancient Egypt’s pyramids, pharaohs and artifacts delight the imagination, reigniting wonder of the distant past in every generation. Experts are also using the latest techniques to spill secrets hidden within discoveries made decades ago, with new research this week “digitally dissecting” an unusual mummy found in 1935. The "screaming woman" whose mummified remains were discovered in 1935 may have died violently, a new study suggests. — To keep swimmers and beachgoers safe, scientists are using artificial intelligence to detect juvenile sharks, which like to hang out near the shore. The Summary Many young climate advocates see Kamala Harris as stronger on environmental issues than Joe Biden. President Joe Biden may have passed the United States’ most significant climate legislation ever, but many young environmental activists say they see Kamala Harris as stronger on the issue. But several young climate activists ages 16 to 29 said for them, the expansion of the fossil fuel industry during Biden’s presidency has clouded those successes. Harris’ young supporters have highlighted the settlements she secured as California attorney general with Chevron, BP and ConocoPhillips over their handling of hazardous materials. Sunrise Movement protesters gather near Vice President Harris' Brentwood home on April 14, calling on her to urge President Biden to declare a climate emergency.

Wall Street to Big Tech: Is AI ever going to make money?
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN —There’s been one big question on the minds of Wall Streeters this tech earnings season: When will anyone start making actual money from artificial intelligence? But Big Tech still has relatively little to show for all their billions spent in terms of significant revenue gains from AI or profitable new products, and investors are starting to get antsy. Shares of both Google and Microsoft dipped following their earnings reports, a sign of investors’ discontent that their huge AI investments hadn’t led to far-better-than-expected results. She added: “Gen AI is where we’re much earlier … We don’t expect our gen AI products to be a meaningful driver of revenue in ’24. As an example of just how long it can take AI products to come to fruition, take Tesla’s AI-based “full self-driving” technology.

Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., displays the new Blackwell GPU chip during the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference on March 18, 2024. Current interest in artificial intelligence revolves around two key terms — large language models (LLMs) and generative AI. Not all chip firms are benefitting from the boom in artificial intelligence, earnings show, underscoring the complexities of the semiconductor supply chain and dominance of some companies over others in different parts of the sector. But Nvidia's rival AMD has brought its own chip to market, called the MI300X AI chip, for AI purposes and is beginning to see the rewards. Chip manufacturing and tool companies appear to be benefitting too from the boom in AI.

However, after EzDubs went through the Y Combinator startup program last year, the company made a quick pivot, adding Microsoft's cloud into the mix. That's because EzDubs' founders learned of a partnership that enabled Y Combinator companies to receive $350,000 worth of credits on Microsoft Azure. The current offer includes $350,000 in AWS credits, plus $300,000 reserved for tapping the custom silicon, the spokesperson said. A spokesperson later said 58% of Y Combinator startups had taken up Microsoft's credit offer, a figure that doesn't reflect actual Azure usage. "Leading AI startups use OpenAI to power their AI solutions, therefore, making them Azure customers as well."

Intel, the Silicon Valley chip maker, said on Thursday that it will slash more than 15,000 jobs to aid a turnaround plan, as the company tries to recover after a series of stumbles. The job cuts amounted to 15 percent of Intel’s work force. The company also announced other restructuring moves and a reduction in capital spending, which are expected to cut costs by $10 billion in 2025. To conserve cash, Intel also said it would suspend its quarterly dividend in the fourth quarter. “This is painful news for me to share,” Patrick Gelsinger, Intel’s chief executive, said in a letter to employees.

Apple Intelligence, the company's forthcoming artificial intelligence system, could spur a fresh cycle of iPhone upgrades and hardware sales. One question Cook was willing to partially address was about the company's spending on AI servers. "Embedded in our results this quarter is an increase year over year in the amount we're spending for AI and Apple Intelligence," Cook told CNBC's Steve Kovach on Thursday. The rise in Apple's capital expenditure is tiny compared to its mega-cap peers, such as Microsoft, Google , and Meta . Zuckerberg also wants to ensure that Apple won't fully control the next major technology shift, if it turns out to be AI.

We ended up in the medieval town of Loches due to a recommendation from a local. One of my favorite examples of this approach was when my husband and I took a road trip from Paris to Andorra with our son. In Paris, someone from the car hire company recommended we visit Loches, a medieval town in the Loire Valley. The next day, we asked a server where she'd recommend staying within three or four hours south of where we were. We absolutely loved walking through the cobblestone streets, exploring its religious sites, and listening to the church bells in the morning.

Grass Valley, California, was one of those places for me. AdvertisementWhile Martin debated pros and cons, I quickly mapped Sacramento to Grass Valley — it was 56 miles. On a scouting trip, he agreed that Grass Valley seemed like a great place. But once we finally lived in the Northern California town, we realized we may have been better off just visiting. I lived in Grass Valley for two and a half years, and three years after moving away, I'm only in touch with a few people.

According to an S&P Global analysis, the global semiconductor industry consumed as much water in 2021 as the city of Hong Kong. Water consumption for chip fabs and data centers will rise as the demand for chips grows. The chip fabs stored the TCE underground, but tanks sometimes ruptured, leaking the chemical into the local groundwater and soil. Now, chip fabs must work with local governments to meet water management and waste disposal requirements. Several researchers are investigating ways to reduce and recycle water in chip manufacturing.

This mechanism, the researchers say, can not only give us more insight into the secrets hidden below Mercury’s surface, but on planetary evolution and the internal structure of exoplanets with similar characteristics. Mercury owes its gray surface to the widespread presence of graphite, which is a form of carbon. Also known as the Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging mission, it gathered data about the planet’s geology, chemistry and magnetic field, before the spacecraft ran out of fuel and impacted the surface. “However, some lavas at the surface of Mercury have been formed by melting of the very deep mantle. “Only future missions to the planet Mercury will tell whether these predictions were correct.

Reuters —A Tesla Model S car was in “Full Self-Driving” mode when it hit and killed a 28-year-old motorcyclist in the Seattle area in April, police said, making it at least the second fatal accident involving the technology on which Tesla CEO Elon Musk is pinning his hopes. Tesla says its “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software requires active driver supervision and does not make vehicles autonomous. Previously, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said there was one fatal accident involving a Tesla vehicle using FSD software between August 2022 and August 2023. This year, Musk shelved Tesla’s all-new affordable cars and increased his bets on self-driving vehicles, saying he will be shocked if Tesla cannot achieve full self-driving capability next year. In December 2023, Tesla was forced to recall nearly all its vehicles on U.S. roads to add safeguards to the software.
