Some wealthy people now may have "second thoughts" about going on adventure tourism, a lecturer said. Trips to the deep sea, space or remote parts of the planet offered "bragging rights," she said. The possible loss of the Titan submersible will not dampen demand for "extreme" tourism where a rescue is unlikely or even impossible, an academic told Insider. Hamish Harding, one of the people on the missing sub, also went to space with Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin last year. Space tourism "may or may not" become viable and affordable to more than just the very wealthy in our lifetimes, the academic said, but the rise of "last chance" tourism would continue.

The OECD recently predicted that the UK will experience the highest inflation among all advanced economies this year. Inflation dipped below 10% in April but continues to exceed consensus forecasts and remains significantly higher than the Bank of England 's 2% target. The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH), the ONS' preferred metric, rose by 7.9% in the 12 months to May 2023, up from 7.8% in April. LONDON — U.K. inflation came in hotter than expected in May, as consumer prices rose by an annual 8.7%, unchanged from the previous month. However, he said the Bank will now "feel like it has no choice, especially with core inflation now rising again."

GLASTONBURY, England, June 21 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of music fans streamed into Worthy Farm in southwest England on Wednesday at the start of Glastonbury, the beloved music festival that will feature Elton John, Guns N' Roses and the Arctic Monkeys this weekend. Elated fans wore sun hats and lugged camping gear to the site of the world's biggest open-air arts and music festival, primed to witness hundreds of acts over five days culminating in British singer Elton John's last ever UK show on Sunday night. Heavy showers fell over the 900-acre grassy expanse of Glastonbury on Wednesday, although fans, many equipped with Wellington boots to wade through muddy fields, appeared undeterred. Glastonbury, founded by Michael Eavis 53 years ago, typically sells out before any headliners have been announced, given the strength of previous line-ups. "I've done a festival before but I've never managed to get my tickets here," said Glastonbury first-timer Hemmings.

Reducing fuel's carbon intensity is critical to Canada's efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% from 2005 levels by 2030. But Canada's location bordering the United States makes it especially vulnerable to a possible future flood of cheaper U.S. biofuels, said Ian Thomson, president of Advanced Biofuels Canada. The lobby group estimates there are some C$10 billion worth of Canadian projects at early stages of development, not counting more advanced ones by Imperial Oil (IMO.TO) and others. Canada offers nothing similar, but unlike the United States, has negative incentives such as a carbon tax. The companies considering investment in the United States include Arbios Biotech, a joint venture of forestry company Canfor (CFP.TO) and Licella Holdings.

The OECD recently predicted that the UK will experience the highest inflation among all advanced economies this year. The U.K. headline inflation is "projected to slow on the back of declining energy prices and to come down close to target by the end of 2024," the OECD noted. "Core inflation is set to be more persistent due to strong services inflation, only receding to 3.2% in 2024." The U.K. is set to report a headline inflation of 6.9% this year, above the OECD average of 6.6% for 2023. Sanctions-struck Russia is forecast to have a headline inflation of just under 5.4% in 2023.

Lower cholesterol with a plant-based diet, study says

In study particpants, LDL levels dropped 10% and total cholesterol declined 7% for people following a plant-based diet when compared with those who eat both meat and plants, the study found. A plant-based diet can help reduce LDL cholesterol, a new study said. Statin treatment is superior to plant-based diets in reducing fats and cholesterol levels, Frikke-Schmidt said in a statement. In addition, people who transition to a plant-based diet should still be mindful about the kinds of foods they’re consuming. “Not all plant-based diets are equal,” said Aedin Cassidy, professor and director for interdisciplinary research at the Institute for Global Food Security in Queen’s University Belfast, in a statement.

The Gen Z paradoxGen Z's economic power is growing faster than other generations, according to Bank of America. In the US, fashion is the preferred category for entertainment spending among Gen Z, outranking dining out, video games, and music. A 2021 McKinsey survey found that 42% of American Gen Zers said they didn't even know what makes clothes sustainable. In addition to pushing people to buy more clothes, the buy-now, think-later model of live shopping also encourages people to buy clothes that are worse for the planet. To solve that problem, she founded Viviene New York in 2022, a Gen Z-led marketing agency that helps sustainable brands connect with Gen Z audiences through social media.
Ixchíu Hernández had already been the victim of years of online threats -- attempts to humiliate and silence her. Published in April 2021, it reveals: "Online attacks on women journalists appear to be increasing significantly, as this study demonstrates, particularly in the context of the 'shadow pandemic' of violence against women during COVID-19. "Online violence against women journalists is designed to: belittle, humiliate, and shame; induce fear, silence, and retreat; discredit them professionally, undermining accountability journalism and trust in facts; and chill their active participation...in public debate. Ricchiardi-Folwell explains that because of the often-sexualized nature of the attacks, women remain silent about their harassment, which leads them to believe they are alone. May 1 (Reuters) - Belgium's Luca Brecel became the first player from mainland Europe to win the snooker world title as he completed a fairytale fortnight by resisting a Mark Selby fightback to triumph 18-15 at The Crucible on Sunday. Brecel enjoyed a 9-8 overnight lead after Saturday's two sessions, but won the opening four frames on Sunday with three centuries to seize command. Selby looked on a roll but fearless Brecel would not be denied the title which lifts him second in the world rankings. After that win he said he had celebrated beating another former champion, Mark Williams, in the previous round by getting as 'drunk as hell'. While Brecel celebrated becoming Belgium's latest and most unlikely sporting hero, Selby, 39, had the consolation of making the first 147 break ever in the final of the world championship, his maximum coming during a storming fightback on Saturday.

April 26 (Reuters) - Scott Sheffield, who built U.S. oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD.N) into the largest producer in Texas, will retire at the end of the year, the company said on Wednesday. With its $52 billion market value, Pioneer has repeatedly been discussed as a potential candidate for U.S. oil majors. Sheffield, 70, was Pioneer’s founding CEO from 1997 to 2016 and its chairman since 1999. In an interview, Sheffield declined to comment on merger rumors, noting Pioneer "will always do the right thing for shareholders." Richard Dealy, Pioneer's chief operating officer and former finance chief, was named CEO, effective upon Sheffield's retirement.
