Amazon is instructing corporate staffers to spend five days a week in the office, CEO Andy Jassy wrote in a memo on Monday. The decision marks a significant shift from Amazon's earlier return-to-work stance, which required corporate workers to be in the office at least three days a week. Amazon's headcount totaled 1.53 million employees in the second quarter, representing growth of just 5% from a year earlier. If anything, the last 15 months we've been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits. Before the pandemic, not everybody was in the office five days a week, every week.

watch nowDrugmakers are betting that delivering radiation directly to tumors will become the next big cancer breakthrough. That can allow the treatment to deliver radiation to cancer cells and spare the rest of the body from the level of damage that comes with many cancer drugs. For Pluvicto, patients come in once every six weeks for up to six treatments. One opportunity Bristol Myers Squibb sees is combining radiopharmaceuticals with existing cancer drugs like immunotherapy, said Robert Plenge, Bristol's chief research officer. But she thinks the technology will become an important part of cancer drugs in the next decade.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger holds a sample of a wafer during his keynote speech at the Computex conference in Taipei on June 4, 2024. Intel shares jumped 8% in extended trading Monday after the company said it plans to turn its foundry business into an independent unit with its own board and the potential to raise outside capital. Gelsinger said the restructuring would allow the foundry business to "evaluate independent sources of funding," and comes days after Intel's board met to assess the direction and future of the company. The foundry business, which Intel plans to use to manufacture chips for other customers, has been a big drag on its bottom line, with the company spending roughly $25 billion on it in each of the last two years. With a standalone "operating board" and a cleaner corporate structure, the mechanics of a separation become far easier than trying to turn a fully integrated unit into a separate company.

New York CNN —Intel’s struggling chip-making business got a boost Monday from a high-profile client: Amazon. Intel Foundry and Amazon Web Services will coinvest in a custom chip design for the latter and “announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework,” according to a release. “Specifically, Intel Foundry will produce an AI fabric chip for AWS on Intel 18A,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the statement Monday. The new deal, along with a $3 billion grant from the US government to boost domestic chip making and make chips for the US military, “demonstrates the continued progress we are making to build a world-class foundry business,” Intel said in the statement. Intel has changed its business model to try to become a global chip manufacturer to rival Taiwan’s TSMC.

Three Israeli hostages, whose bodies were found last year in underground tunnels in Gaza, were likely killed in a military airstrike aimed at a Hamas commander, an investigation into their deaths concluded. The IDF said this was a "high probability" assessment but that it was "not possible to definitively determine" the cause of the three hostages' deaths. Both Beizer and Sherman were members of the Israeli military. Earlier this month, the IDF said it found the bodies of six hostages killed by Hamas and returned them to Israel. The IDF estimated that 101 hostages remain in Gaza.

More analysts are recommending "defensive" shares over AI plays as macro conditions change. With some questioning the AI rally, investors could benefit from non-tech growth companies, an analyst said. Similar to BofA's call, Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson last week called the AI theme "overcooked" and said investors should shift to defensive shares. But in tune with what others had said, Diton also touted that utilities stocks as one meaningful investment to make right now. As bullish on AI as he may be, he warned that the market has become extremely concentrated in tech's leading names, and investors need to diversify.

Carl Icahn's investment company Icahn Enterprises won the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming it artificially inflated its share price by issuing unsustainably high dividends to help the billionaire investor obtain large amounts of personal loans. A spokesman for Icahn Enterprises did not immediately respond to a similar request. The shareholders said Icahn Enterprises' true health became evident as its Auto Parts Plus business went bankrupt, the company slashed its dividend and Icahn renegotiated his loans. He also said Icahn Enterprises' 2021 annual report disclosed Carl Icahn's share pledges, and that there were no allegations that any defendant conducted insider trading. Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.
