Just trying to make some birdies and avoid the bogeys," said Scheffler. ... And yeah, just fortunate to see that shot go in on 17 and then a nice birdie on 18 to kind of get myself back into it." Scheffler started the day five shots back of halfway leader Fowler and fell out of the picture after navigating the first 16 holes in one over par. Scheffler, who secured his lone major title at the 2022 Masters, where he took a three-shot lead into the final round, said he did not feel any different being the hunter or the hunted on the Sunday of a major. I'm showing up and I want to play good and I want to win," said Scheffler.

It might have been fitting if someone from Holywood won this year’s U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. But Rory McIlroy, born in the Northern Ireland town by that name, is not having that kind of year. On Sunday, McIlroy was chasing his first major championship title in nine years, a drought that continues to shadow a luminous career that began with four major titles from 2011 to 2014. McIlroy, like almost all of the PGA Tour’s players, felt blindsided. But on Sunday, a buoyant, smiling McIlroy, 34, was again enthusiastically chasing another major title, in the final round of the 123rd U.S. Open.

Fowler has not won a PGA Tour title since 2019 and sank to a career-low 185th in the rankings last September. It's been a while since I've felt this good in a tournament, let alone a major," said Fowler. "Being in the lead is nice, but it really means nothing right now," said Fowler, who also had a share of the first-round lead. From there, Fowler closed with a routine par and walked off the course having set a U.S. Open record with 18 birdies through 36 holes. Fowler was asked to describe his emotions now that he has emerged from a lengthy period of struggle.

Fowler leads as U.S. Open third round gets underway

Fowler has already made a mark this week as his two-day 130 total tied the lowest 36-hole U.S. Open scoring record set by Martin Kaymer in 2014. A little different once you get to after 54 holes because that's when things really heat up," Fowler said on Friday. Fowler, who also held a share of the first-round lead with Schauffele, will have his work cut out with a leaderboard that features plenty of top-tier talent. World number three McIlroy, who has gone nearly nine years since winning his fourth major title, will set off in the penultimate group alongside Schauffele two strokes off the lead. World number one Scottie Scheffler, trailing Fowler by five, and British Open champion Cameron Smith, six back, were scheduled to go off at 2:56 PT.

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - American Rickie Fowler held the early lead at the U.S. Open on Thursday with Xander Schauffele in a group one shot back and Masters champion Jon Rahm four adrift midway through his first round at the Los Angeles Country Club. Fowler, runner-up in 2014, started on the back nine and produced six birdies and two bogeys through his first 10 holes. The 123rd U.S Open got underway against the backdrop of the bombshell announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi backers of the LIV circuit. Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick is in a group with last year's British Open winner Cameron Smith, one of the breakaway tour's biggest recruits. June 15 (Reuters) - LIV Golf plans to go through with its schedule for the remainder of the year and 2024 despite the agreement to merge with the PGA Tour, former world number one Dustin Johnson said. The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and rival Saudi-backed LIV circuit announced the shock agreement to form one unified commercial entity last week, bringing an end to a bitter fight that had split the sport. There is uncertainly about how the golf calendar will look next year under the framework of the merger, with some doubts being raised about whether the LIV Golf League team-based competition would even exist after its 2023 season. However Johnson, one of the star recruits of the breakaway circuit, said he learned from Yasir Al-Rumayyan that the circuit would continue next year. June 14 (Reuters) - World number three Rory McIlroy said he has made "big steps of progress" in his game before he begins the U.S. Open with renewed focus and tries to end a nine-year barren run in majors. "I'm certainly feeling a lot better coming into this major championship than I was going to Oak Hill. McIlroy won the U.S. Open in 2011 at Congressional Country Club, storming to victory while setting the mark for lowest 72-hole score in the tournament's history at 16-under-par 268. "I've had my ups and downs in this tournament but I've started to figure out how to handle U.S. Open conditions and tests," McIlroy said. "I think there's certainly a lot more patience in my game than there used to be."

Koepka became the first active member of LIV Golf to win a major when he triumphed by two shots at the PGA Championship three weeks ago. Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will go head-to-head with reigning British Open winner Cameron Smith - another LIV recruit - and American Sam Bennett. World number one Scottie Scheffler headlines the morning action when he starts his bid alongside two-times major champion Collin Morikawa and home favourite Max Homa. London CNN —Swiss luxury watchmaker Omega says it has been the victim of “organized criminal activity,” alleging three of its former staff members admitted working with intermediaries to sell a fake Speedmaster watch for some $3.4 million dollars. The watch was bought by Omega itself for 3.115 million Swiss francs—25 times the auctioneer’s upper estimated price—at a Phillips auction in in Geneva in November 2021. “OMEGA and Phillips were the joint victims of organized criminal activity involving the selling of this specific watch by auction,” the statement added. “This timepiece is currently a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation that must also bring to light the seller of the watch. “The watch was bought by OMEGA for the OMEGA Museum and we understand from OMEGA that it has discovered that the watch is composed of unrelated parts from various sources, and that OMEGA employees may have been involved in assembling the watch.

The field of players teeing it off on Thursday is unchanged since the USGA previously said that, like the three other majors, it would allow both PGA Tour and LIV golfers to compete. But the feuds that broke out between golfers from the rival leagues is unlikely to be patched up so quickly. June 9 (Reuters) - The PGA Tour faces a delicate balancing act in welcoming back LIV Golf players while also ensuring those who stayed loyal to the U.S.-based circuit "feel good" about their decision, PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne said. "We have to make sure that whatever it is that we finalise, that they feel good about their decisions (to remain on the PGA Tour)... I don't think it's going to be easy and I don't think we're all going to agree, but I think we can get there." Dunne, who helped broker the merger, also said the PGA Tour was ready to "walk away" if they felt there was anything that would have hurt the game. In Reprieve for PGA Tour, Rory McIlroy Backs Saudi Deal
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( Alan Blinder | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The PGA Tour, facing a crush of internal dissent for its choice this week to accept the kind of Saudi money it spent the last year denouncing as tainted, appeared Wednesday to have the support of one of its most powerful players: Rory McIlroy, who had been one of the foremost critics of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, which had convulsed the sport. Peering a decade into the future, McIlroy predicted Wednesday that the agreement to bring the tour and LIV’s business dealings into a single company controlled by the PGA Tour would be “good for the game of professional golf.”“There’s a lot of ambiguity,” McIlroy said Wednesday in Toronto, where a tour event is scheduled to begin Thursday. “There’s a lot of things still to be sort of thrashed out. But at least it means that the litigation goes away, which has been a massive burden for everyone that’s involved with the tour and that’s playing the tour, and we can start to work toward some sort of way of unifying the game at the elite level.”McIlroy, a member of the PGA Tour board, which will ultimately have to approve the agreement that blindsided almost the entire golf industry when it was announced on Tuesday, is only one player. But he is among the world’s most prominent golfers, and his decision to refrain from joining the wave of condemnations toward the PGA Tour is a precious reprieve for Commissioner Jay Monahan and his allies as they scramble to curb a revolt against the deal.

"The people that left the PGA Tour irreparably harmed this Tour, started litigation against it," said McIlroy the defending Canadian Open champion. McIlroy was not tempted by the Saudi money and believes those players who stood with the PGA Tour should be compensated for their loyalty. This is the PGA TOUR, the DP World Tour and the PIF. "It's the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour and the Public Investment Fund are basically partnering to create a new company." That new company, McIlroy said, will be run by the PGA Tour with commissioner Jay Monahan acting CEO.

The sporting world was left stunned when the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and rival Saudi-backed LIV circuit ended their bitter two-year dispute and announced an agreement to merge and form one unified commercial entity. The most aggrieved players are likely to be those, like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama, who turned down eye-watering sums from LIV Golf to remain loyal to the PGA Tour only to see the tours merge. "I do feel bad for the PGA Tour players because they were told one thing and something else happened, and our side, we were told one thing and it's come to fruition," DeChambeau told CNN. "It does stink a little bit from my perspective that the PGA Tour players are not necessarily winning. I think this is one of the saddest days in the history of professional golf," Chamblee said on the Golf Channel.
