And I think that’s another piece, is we have to not be delusional about what has actually happened in education.

The Minneapolis city council has advanced a bill that could raise the minimum wage for rideshare drivers. "Prices could double, and only the most wealthy could still afford a ride," said Lyft. The Minneapolis city council's move to hike the minimum wage for rideshare drivers has Lyft threatening to exit the city if the bill becomes law. Rival rideshare company Uber also lashed out against the law. To be sure, data from Rakuten Intelligence shows a 92% rise in Uber and Lyft ride costs between 2018 and 2021.

New York CNN —Lyft and Uber threatened to stop doing business in Minneapolis after the city council adopted a new rule Thursday that would set a minimum wage for rideshare drivers. In a 7-5 vote, the Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance that includes a number of rideshare worker protections, including a minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers. Minneapolis is debating the minimum wage as gig workers across the country are advocating for fair wages and job benefits. Uber sent an email to its drivers on Monday, urging them to contact the Mayor and City Council to ask them to oppose the move. Uber said its drivers sent over 700 emails on Thursday, but did not specify what was in those emails.

Credit card enthusiasts will tell you the best deals come from earning airline or hotel points and miles and redeeming them for free vacations worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. From cash back credit cards to flexible travel cards, these five options are a great choice for those who want to rack up rewards without playing the miles game. The best on the market right now is the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, which offers 2% cash back on every purchase. Rates and FeesRent makes up the largest portion of most Americans’ budgets, but it is a particularly hard category to earn rewards on. The Bilt Mastercard is currently the only credit card on the market changing that.

While many customers don't tip, those who do are helping businesses keep their prices stable. Some people are happy to tip almost every time they are prompted, and they're helping businesses pay their employees more without cutting into profits or raising prices. Farley told Insider that he usually leaves at least a small tip whenever businesses prompt him, even if it's for something that didn't require much "actual service" — like buying a drink at the counter. A similar story is playing out at businesses across the country, Laurence Kotlikoff, an economics professor at Boston University, previously told Insider. Personal experience working in the service industry causes some customers to tip almost every chance they getCamille Rogers, a 25-year-old Manhattan-based publicist, told Insider that she usually tips whenever it's an option.

Instacart has cut its minimum base pay to $4 from $7 per order, angering many who work for the app. The cut affects base pay, or an amount that Instacart workers are guaranteed to get if they accept an order. Instacart announced the lower base pay in a July 20 blog post entitled "creating new ways to earn." In the post, Instacart said orders that involve picking and delivering many items "may pay $10 or more" in base pay. Lower base pay means more reliance on tipsBoth Hudson and the driver in Tennessee said that the base pay cut makes customers' tips a more important source of income.

Many also feel added pressure to tip amid the rise of automatic tipping prompts on self-service kiosks and apps, NerdWallet's consumer budgeting report found. Amid the "tipflation" debate, where are consumers tipping the least, or skipping gratuity altogether? To find out, CNBC Make It asked three New Yorkers which services they never tip on — and what etiquette experts recommend in each scenario. If it's fast food or you're grabbing a pre-packaged item from a shelf, Farley says you don't need to tip. An etiquette expert's take: When you're paying for a taxi or rideshare, you're paying the price of convenience, and your tip should reflect that, says Farley.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks during an interview on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., February 28, 2022. Since then, however, Adams' often-positive relationship with New York's tech community has soured in some ways. Adams' team also referred CNBC to two New York tech leaders: Andrew Rasiej, the chairman of NY Tech Alliance, and George Fontas, the CEO of tech lobbying shop Fontas Advisors. NY Tech Alliance is a massive tech trade group with 60,000 members, according to their website. Rasiej pushed back on the notion that Adams relationship with New York's tech community has soured.

"It's more of an evolutionary technology than a revolutionary technology." But Cowen managing director Cai von Rumohr said investors should be prepared for timelines to be pushed back, as this is still considered "early-stage tech." "Given the push for climate and to basically reduce carbon emissions, I think, at some point, there's going to be a market," von Rumohr said. The outlook is still clouded by many variables, von Rumohr said. "It's definitely an important investment opportunity for investors," Moeller said.

The number of people doing platform gig work like deliveries on apps in the US grew by over 150% during the pandemic. The researchers used tax data from 90 gig economy platforms and apps for their analysis. "COVID was a watershed moment for a particular type of platform gig work, which is delivery work," Koustas said. Gig workers became younger and more female; 44% of transportation and delivery platform workers were female by 2021, per the working paper. While platform gig work climbed during the pandemic, a research brief about the working paper results states that other contract and freelance work fell during COVID.

A new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau looks at employer-driven debt. The report finds that employers are saddling workers with thousands in debt for training and supplies. On Thursday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a report detailing the impact of training repayment agreement provisions, or TRAPs. The watchdog said it will continue to evaluate how companies are using TRAPs to determine whether they are violating consumer financial laws. "TRAPs impose significant financial burdens on workers and foster monopsony in labor markets by reducing worker mobility and bargaining power.

I made a lot of mistakes with money in my 20s. When life got busy, I turned a blind eye to my money situation — until my credit card bill was sent to me. AdvertisementAnother big-ticket item on my credit card bill was rideshare costs, which could have been avoided in most cases. Before I knew it, I had a lot of open credit cards — and a desire to close them all. I knew that opening credit cards could help my credit score, but only if I used them and paid them off immediately.

Uber, DoorDash, and Grubhub are suing New York City to block a new minimum wage law for delivery workers. Beginning on July 12, delivery apps must pay drivers about $18 per hour they are active on the app. Beginning July 12, delivery drivers in New York City must earn a minimum wage of about $18 an hour, according to a law signed by Eric Adams last month. The new minimum wage would require delivery apps to either pay drivers roughly 50 cents per minute of every trip or pay drivers $17.96 per hour they are active on the app. "Now because there are more delivery drivers and people are ordering less and tipping less, it's becoming more difficult.

Mueller started Impulse Space in 2021 and is building space tugs that can move with cargo to different orbits. So far, Impulse Space has raised $30 million in seed funding from investors such as Peter Thiel's Founders Fund and Lux Capital.
