Opinion: RFK Jr.’s VP pick is a missile aimed at Biden

CNN —Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign can’t win, but it could swing the presidency to former President Donald Trump. RFK Jr.’s namesake father was a Democratic US attorney general and a Democratic senator from New York. So was Joe’s son, RFK Jr’s nephew, Joseph P. Kennedy III. To believe that, one must ignore that Perot, like Clinton, was a change candidate; like Clinton, he was pro-choice, and like Clinton, Perot supported campaign finance reform. But you don’t need decades of experience and reams of data to see who RFK Jr’s bid hurts.

CNN —The Supreme Court will hear arguments Monday in an unusual First Amendment appeal from the National Rifle Association against a New York financial regulator who persuaded banks and insurance companies to sever ties with the gun rights group. The danger, she said, is that regulators in both red and blue states could start leaning on insurance companies and banks to drop coverage for disfavored advocacy groups or companies. Critics dubbed the policies “murder insurance.”If other insurance companies distanced themselves from the NRA, Vullo argues, it was because they no longer wanted to do business with the group. The Supreme Court held that such “informal censorship” was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court will hear a related case Monday, one that implicates the White House, federal agencies and social media.

America's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is officially open, a long-awaited moment that helps pave the way for a succession of large wind farms. The Biden administration has approved six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects, and auctioned lease areas for offshore wind for the first time off the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper called the opening a major milestone that proves large offshore wind farms can be built, both in the United States and in other countries with little or no offshore wind energy currently. The first U.S. offshore wind farm was supposed to be a project off the coast of Massachusetts known as Cape Wind. The nation's second large offshore wind farm, Vineyard Wind, is expected to open later this year off the coast of Massachusetts, too.

"In a condo or co-op building, upfront costs and fees are determined at the building level and they can vary significantly," Romero said. To compare, for a typical rental building, according to New York state law, the application fee is capped at $20, and the security deposit is limited to one month's rent, Romero said. Rhode Island has a new state law that prohibits landlords, rental agents and property managers from charging application fees to rental applicants beyond the actual cost of conducting certain background checks if needed. What to know about renting a condo or co-opTo be sure: condos and co-op properties are primarily targeted to people who want to buy. If you come across condos or co-ops in your rental search, here are a few things to consider: 1.

For Zillow Chief Economist Skylar Olsen, this means homes around the country that are relatively cheap should have tailwinds for appreciation in the years ahead. While cheaper homes in every market should outperform, Olsen also said that the affordability crisis means that lower-cost cities around the US are well-positioned for appreciation. In addition to mostly being cheap on an absolute basis, most of the cities are cheap on a relative basis. The eight cities Olsen listed are compiled below in no particular order. Median home price sale data (list price for Hartford) is included, as well as data from Olsen's affordability metric and average monthly mortgage payments.

Speaking at the Next.io forum on internet gambling and sports betting, several mentioned New York and Maryland as likely candidates to start offering internet casino games soon. And some noted that, despite years of difficulty crafting a deal that satisfies commercial and tribal casinos and card rooms, California is simply too big a market not to offer internet gambling. Shawn Fluharty, a West Virginia state delegate and chairman of a national group of legislators from gambling states, listed New York and Maryland as the most likely states to add internet gambling soon. Both men acknowledged the difficulty of passing online casino legislation; Thirty-eight states plus Washington, D.C., currently offer sports betting, compared to seven with internet casino gambling. Fluharty said four casinos opened in Pennsylvania after the state began offering internet casino gambling.

While a number of AI systems have been found to discriminate, tipping the scales in favor of certain races, genders or incomes, there’s scant government oversight. Those bills, along with the over 400 AI-related bills being debated this year, were largely aimed at regulating smaller slices of AI. The use of AI to make consequential decisions — what the bills call “automated decision tools” — is pervasive but largely hidden. The AI was trained to assess new resumes by learning from past resumes — largely male applicants. Requirements to routinely test an AI system aren’t in most of the legislative proposals, nearly all of which still have a long road ahead.

CVS and Walgreens will start selling the abortion pill mifepristone this month at certain pharmacy locations in states where it is legal to do so, spokespeople for the companies told CNBC on Friday. Mifepristone is the first pill used in the two-drug medication abortion regimen. Before the FDA's regulatory change, only a few mail-order pharmacies or specially certified doctors or clinics could distribute mifepristone. The regulatory change will potentially expand abortion access as the Biden administration wrestles with how best to protect abortion rights. Medication abortion is the most common method of terminating a pregnancy in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Biden administration is considering whether to provide Ukraine with badly needed arms and ammunition from Pentagon stockpiles even though the government has run out of money to replace those munitions, according to two U.S. officials and a senior lawmaker. Such a move would be a short-term measure to help tide over Ukraine’s armed forces until Congress breaks a monthslong impasse and approves a larger military aid package to the country, the officials said. But in considering whether to tap into the Pentagon stockpiles again, the administration is weighing both the political risks and questions about American military readiness. “It’s something that I know is on the table,” Senator Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat who leads the Armed Services Committee, said in an interview. Mr. Reed, who recently returned from a trip to Ukraine, said he would support such a stopgap measure in “incremental uses to buy time.”
