Morning Bid: Gold makes the running as oil fails to fire
  + stars: | 2023-12-04 | by ( Wayne Cole | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Oil failed to sustain an early rally that followed news of attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Notably, oil prices lost early gains and Brent eased around 57 cents to $78.31 a barrel amid doubts that OPEC+ would be able to maintain planned output cuts, particularly by some African countries. At the same time, U.S. oil output is at record levels above 13 million barrels a day and rig counts are still rising. A commodity faring better is gold, which surged suddenly this morning to top $2,111 an ounce for the first time before paring the gains to $2,086. Yields on U.S. two-year notes rose almost 4 bps, but that follows a drop of 40 bps last week.

The adult-content and OnlyFans star Riley Reid recently launched an AI platform, Clona, with a chatbot based on herself. I feel so lucky I've had the opportunity to create Riley Reid as a mainstream name. Riley Reid has been in the adult-content industry for over a decade. Reid cofounded Clona based on an idea her team had when they began noticing the success of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Business: Phillips 66 is an energy manufacturing and logistics company. Percentage Ownership: n/a Average Cost: n/a Activist Commentary: Elliott is a very successful and astute activist investor. On Wednesday, Elliott sent a letter to Phillips 66, announcing that it has taken a $1 billion stake and is seeking up to two board seats. While we do not generalize like that, it is hard to imagine a more amicable and constructive activist campaign than what Elliott is proposing at Phillips 66. When implemented, Phillips 66 saw costs increase relative to peers, burning shareholders' confidence in the management team's ability to achieve its goals.

CNN —A blind golden mole that glides through sand has been rediscovered in South Africa, 87 years after wildlife experts feared it had gone extinct. A beach in the northwest of South Africa where De Winton's golden moles are living. The challenge was pinpointing if De Winton’s golden mole was one of them. Common species, such as Cape golden mole and Grant’s golden mole were easily identifiable, but since there was only one De Winton’s golden mole reference DNA available, the team could not confidently identify it. Spot gold rose 0.3% at $2,042.58 per ounce by 0621 GMT on Friday, and is up about 2% for the week so far. The metal rose $60 in November in its second straight monthly gain. Data on Thursday showed U.S. consumer spending rose moderately in October, while the annual increase in inflation was the smallest in more than 2-1/2 years. "However, month-end flow may have also been a factor, and seasonality tends to favour gains for gold between November and December," City Index's Simpson added. Spot silver and platinum edged up 0.1% to $25.29 and $927.44 per ounce, respectively, while palladium rose 0.4% to $1,011.65.

REUTERS/Gary McWilliams/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 30 (Reuters) - U.S. oil refiner Phillips 66 (PSX.N) has retained two top financial and legal advisers for its duel with activist investor Elliott Investment Management, according to a person familiar with the matter. Elliott wants two board seats to be filled by executives with refining experience and faster action on restructuring the fourth-largest U.S. oil refiner to improve its lagging financial performance, the New York activist said on Wednesday. Phillips 66 is relying on financial and legal advice from Goldman Sachs (GS.N) and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the person familiar with the matter said. Elliott Investment Management has taken a $1 billion stake in Phillips 66 and is seeking as many as two board seats in a push to improve the company's performance, according to a Wednesday letter from the activist investor. Elliott's push for the board seats comes as Phillips has underperformed its competitors Marathon Petroleum and Valero . Elliott backed CEO Mark Lashier's plan to improve the company's performance. The CEO plans to do this through a more than $1 billion improvement in Phillips' refining segment, selling $3 billion in noncore assets and increasing the company's long-term capital return policy. Elliott said Phillips 66's stock has an upside of 75% from its last closing price of $118 if the company executes on these goals.

Both contracts had their first weekly gain in five weeks as OPEC+ prepares for a meeting that will have output cuts high on the agenda after recent oil price declines on demand concerns and burgeoning supply, particularly from non-OPEC producers. OPEC+ has moved closer to a compromise with African oil producers on 2024 output levels, three OPEC+ sources have told Reuters. "Fundamentals developments have been bearish with rising U.S. oil inventories," ANZ analysts said in a note. Analysts say oil demand growth could weaken to about 4% in the first half of 2024 as the property sector crunch weighs on diesel use.

Earlier this week, the Fed minutes showed the central bank would proceed "carefully" and "all participants judged it appropriate to maintain" the current rate setting. CNN —An innovative experiment flying aboard NASA’s Psyche mission just hit its first major milestone by successfully carrying out the most distant demonstration of laser communications. The tech demo was designed to be the US space agency’s most distant experiment of high-bandwidth laser communications, testing the sending and receiving of data to and from Earth using an invisible near-infrared laser. NASA/JPL-CaltechIt’s not the first time laser communications have been tested in space. The first test of two-way laser communication occurred in December 2021 when NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration launched and went into orbit about 22,000 miles (35,406 kilometers) from Earth. And the Artemis II spacecraft will use laser communications to return high-definition video of a crewed journey around the moon.

LONDON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - PetroIneos said on Wednesday it is preparing to shut down its Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland to convert it into a fuels import terminal as it faces growing international competition. The 150,000 barrel per day refinery, Scotland's only oil refinery and one of six in Britain, is expected to continue operating until spring 2025, PetroIneos said in a statement. PetroIneos will soon start preparatory work to enable the future transformation of its Grangemouth refinery into a fuels import terminal, it said in a statement. The timescale for the shutdown is yet to be determined exactly but the preparatory work is expected to take around 18 months, with the refinery expected to continue operating until spring 2025. The plan includes converting the site of the refinery into a fuels import hub.
