New York CNN —Donald Trump is facing a cash crunch as deadlines are quickly approaching to find over half a billion dollars he owes in judgments. The scramble over the past week reveals challenges Trump is facing in raising the combined judgments totaling $537 million. It’s unclear how much cash Trump has on hand. Trump offered to post a $100 million bond to cover the New York attorney general’s case, but the appeals court judge rejected it. The sheer size of the judgments raises practical questions about how the Trump could feasibly come up with the cash.

AI is Uncle Sam’s new secret weapon to fight fraud

Starting around late 2022, the Treasury Department began using enhanced fraud-detection methods powered by AI to spot fraud, CNN has learned. Treasury’s AI-powered fraud detection recovered $375 million in fiscal 2023 alone, Treasury officials tell CNN, marking the first time Treasury is publicly acknowledging it is using AI to detect fraud. Instead, Treasury officials say the type of AI they are using falls more into the bucket of machine learning and Big Data. The goal is to move with such speed that anomalies are flagged and banks are alerted before fraudulent checks are ever cashed, Treasury officials said. Catching fraud in millisecondsAmiram Shachar, co-founder and CEO of cloud security startup Upwind, told CNN the federal government should “absolutely” use AI to detect fraud.

Canada's largest pension fund sold a stake in a New York building for $1. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board operates a $436.9 billion fund, with a global real estate portfolio worth roughly $30.6 billion. According to the Bloomberg report, the pension isn't backing out entirely from the office real estate sector, but it's also limiting its holdings in the space. Economists at Moody's, too, expect more pain ahead for commercial real estate.

Of the total, $3 billion was related to BoCom, one of China’s biggest banks, while $2 billion was from selling its retail banking business in France. Separately, HSBC made $3.4 billion in provisions to cover expected credit losses and other charges related to its exposure to the commercial real estate sector in mainland China. The property market has since entered a prolonged slump, marked by an ongoing decline in real estate investment and sales of property. The charges reported by HSBC cast a shadow over its record annual profit, which came in at $30.3 billion, up 78% from 2022. Mounting inflation and interest rates have put significant pressure on several sectors — especially real estate. He suggests that investors look to have 10% of their portfolio exposed to "real estate in some form, as a good rule of thumb." "That exposure can come from REITs [real estate investment trusts] or direct ownership, or other real estate investments if you are a large investor. Rick Romano, Head of Global Real Estate Securities at PGIM Real Estate, agrees, saying that REITs offer investors "a unique and fantastic" opportunity to invest across geographies and segments right now. New York CNN —Macy’s rejected an unsolicited $6 billion bid from an activist investor to take the famed department store private last month. Now, the activist group is taking another shot at Macy’s, launching a proxy fight to take control of the board. Last month, Macy’s announced it was laying off about 3.5% of its workforce, or roughly 2,350 employees. Macy’s said Tuesday it will evaluate Arkhouse’s proposed board candidates, but criticized Arkhouse and another activist investor, Brigade, in a statement. Most pressing, however, is its real estate trouble, which the International Monetary Fund characterized as a historic bust matching levels only seen in the worst collapses of the last three decades. AdvertisementYears of overreliance on real estate as an engine of the economy has led to a buildup of risks, the researchers said. Now, Beijing must clean up distressed developers like Evergrande and Country Garden, support falling real estate prices, and figure out how to put the sector on a more sustainable path. The collapse has transpired at "a historically rapid pace only seen in the largest housing busts in cross-country experience in the last three decades," researchers said. "Large public subsidies in the previous decade helped millions of people move to newer housing from older buildings lacking modern amenities.

That's the year that Dogen quit his job as an investment banker, having spent 13 years working, saving, investing and generally burning himself out. Over the years, Dogen built his passive income streams to about $380,000 annually — $288,000 net of taxes. That was enough to cover the family budget while living in San Francisco — until now. By swapping income-producing assets for a house, "I basically have a lot more dead money now," Dogen says. That means his passive income streams no longer cover his family budget — so back to work it is.
