The US is still coming to grips with the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In today's big story, we examine the scrutiny the Secret Service is facing and what former special agents are saying about the tragedy . But that's not to say the Secret Service has avoided controversy over the last 40-plus years since the Reagan shooting. Secret Service agents converge on former President Donald Trump onstage at his Pennsylvania campaign rally. AdvertisementUltimately, another former Secret Service agent said the entire event represents a failure for Trump's security detail , BI's Matthew Loh and Cameron Manley report.

Bitcoin hit a two-week high Monday, as betting markets suggested an increased chance of victory for crypto-friendly candidate Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election. The value of the world's biggest cryptocurrency, bitcoin, was up around 5% at 1:40 p.m. London time, to $62,781.48, according to CoinGecko. The rally follows the dramatic failed assassination attempt on former President Trump on Saturday. Investors said over the weekend they expected so-called "Trump victory trades" to receive a boost. The Trump campaign began accepting donations from the crypto industry in May and his messaging has become increasingly positive on the future of such digital assets.

On Saturday, hours after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump with an AR-15-style assault rifle, President Biden sounded a familiar refrain: The United States, he assured the public, settles its differences peacefully; political violence is un-American and abhorrent. “The idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard-of.”Americans transfer power peacefully from one party to another most of the time, and most elections are fair and free from the taint of bloodshed. But the attack on Mr. Trump is one on a list of fairly common attempts on presidents’ lives — acts endemic to the political culture and part of an alternative tradition of political violence. This tradition contradicts a kind of mythic faith, held widely by Americans, in a political system that shuns the bullet and embraces the ballot. Presidents and former presidents are members of one of the most intimate clubs on earth, and they have almost always described political violence, especially attacks on one of their own, as unnatural exceptions to an otherwise peaceful polity.

US District Judge Aileen Cannon — who was appointed to the bench by Trump while he was president — ruled Monday that the appointment of Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing the prosecution, was unconstitutional. The legality of Justice Department special counsels has been the subject of some debate over the past two decades. Since then, the US Attorney General has appointed special counsels with less authority while relying on internal Justice Department regulations. AdvertisementDefense lawyers in special counsel investigations have routinely argued the appointment of these newer special counsels is unconstitutional. His lawyers had signaled that, on appeal, they would challenge the legality of appointing a special counsel in the first place.

When President Ronald Reagan was shot by an attention-seeking drifter in 1981, the country united behind its injured leader. The teary-eyed Democratic speaker of the House, Thomas P. O’Neill Jr., went to the hospital room of the Republican president, held his hands, kissed his head and got on his knees to pray for him. But the assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump seems more likely to tear America further apart than to bring it together. Within minutes of the shooting, the air was filled with anger, bitterness, suspicion and recrimination. Fingers were pointed, conspiracy theories advanced and a country already bristling with animosity fractured even more.

Advertisement"So that is, in theory, taking power away from unelected officials," Justin Crowe, a professor of political science at Williams University who researches the Supreme Court, told Business Insider. With Corner Post, Entin said, the Supreme Court created a statute of limitations that, from the standpoint of federal agencies, never really expires. But the Court didn't stop at giving itself the reins to interpret regulations that federal agencies are beholden to. In the Trump case, the Supreme Court offered Trump broad immunity for some of his acts concerning his January 6 election interference case. In the July 6 episode of Slate's Supreme Court analysis podcast "Amicus with Dahlia Lithwick," Senior Court Reporter Mark Joseph Stern said the Court spent this term expanding its power and "restructuring representative democracy to make it less representative and less democratic."

Saturday's shooting at U.S. former President Donald Trump's election rally raises his odds of winning back the White House, and trades betting on his victory will increase this coming week, investors said on Sunday. Trump was shot in the ear during the rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday in what the authorities were treating as an assassination attempt. The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since a 1981 assassination attempt on Republican President Ronald Reagan could upend the Nov. 5 rematch between Republican Trump and President Joe Biden, a Democrat, which has been tight in opinion polls. World leaders and U.S. politicians condemned the shooting, while some industry executives, including Tesla chief Elon Musk, declared their support for Trump. Investors also expect an extension of corporate and personal tax cuts expiring next year, fuelling concerns about rising budget deficits under Trump.

Corporations absolve their employees of responsibility by delegating decision-making to an algorithm or deferring to company policy. Sorry, it's company policyAccording to Davies, accountability sinks emerged over the past decades of privatization and technological innovation. In addition, middle management and customer service jobs were cut or outsourced as corporations prioritized profits, optimizing costs, and delivering strong quarterly earnings. It often looks like a customer service representative working within a system with limited options to help. Accountability sinks can range from customer service to decision-making at major corporations.

Only later — years later, in some cases — does the severity become clear. Grover Cleveland’s aides lied about a surgery in 1893 — performed on a friend’s yacht — to excise a tumor in his mouth. Woodrow Wilson spent his last year and a half as president debilitated by strokes while his wife and doctor secretly carried out some presidential duties. Dwight Eisenhower’s doctor initially described his heart attack in 1955 as “a digestive upset.” John F. Kennedy’s aides lied about his Addison’s disease. President Biden and his aides have become part of this presidential tradition.

The president noted he overwhelmingly won Democratic primaries, which is why nearly all of the convention delegates are currently considered to be pledged to him. Biden is correct that the Democrats’ rules allow delegates to vote for the candidate of their choice. She told me how the process of replacing Biden would work considering nearly all of the 3,949 pledged convention delegates are currently pledged to support him. Sort of legally, according to party rules, he could be replaced anytime up to the roll call at the convention. Party leaders may yet carry on with the plan as a way to squash questions about Biden.

But they may not yet be enough to make a difference on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated in a discussion this week on what Ukraine needs, comparing the jets to the US-made Abrams tanks that Ukraine got last fall. "The problem with F-16," the Ukrainian president said, "is the number and the dates." The US sent only 31 M1A1 Abrams in total, and they were delivered to Ukraine months after British and German tanks. For comparison, Ukraine received about 300 US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, nearly ten times more than the number of Abrams sent.

President Biden will face a moment of high stakes in his campaign for a second term on Thursday evening when he engages with reporters in an unscripted news conference at the end of a three-day NATO summit. Mr. Biden’s performance could either quiet critics or invite a wave of new calls for him to step aside. A hasty exit, with journalists calling out after him, could fuel more concerns about Mr. Biden’s stamina and capacity to handle tough questioning. Just the fact that Mr. Biden agreed to hold the event speaks to the pressure he is facing to prove his contention that the shaky debate was an anomaly. At this point in his term, Mr. Biden has held fewer news conferences than any president since Ronald Reagan.

CNN —President Joe Biden will sit down with NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt for an interview that will tape and air next Monday, the network announced. Portions of the interview will first air Monday at 6:30 pm ET on NBC Nightly News. Last week, Biden sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos for a 22-minute interview that drew in more than 8 million viewers. Biden has sat for the fewest number of television interviews as president since President Ronald Reagan, according to data from Professor Martha Joynt Kumar, a presidential scholar who tracks press interactions. The interview with Holt will be Biden’s sixth sit-down with a news network in 2024.

He was already in a difficult spot before his debate with former President Donald Trump. I think Biden has work to do, but I think he can do it," former White House communications director Kate Bedingfield wrote on X in a series of posts. Biden's dismal approval rating of approximately 38% has remains below the roughly 48% threshold incumbents have needed to win reelection. Biden's worst 2020 position was a four point lead over Trump, according to CNN. Their belief is that Trump's campaign will rue its decision to opt against an extensive on-the-ground presence in the key battleground states.

But recent history raises deep questions about whether Democratic Senate candidates can continue to levitate as far above the presidential ticket as polls now show. “A Democratic Senate majority coalition relies on having both Senators from a state such as Michigan,” said Daniel Hopkins, a University of Pennsylvania political scientist. As recently as the 1980s, it was common for voters to split their tickets in Senate races. Still, even that alignment left room for some Senate candidates to swim against this general tide. This history, by itself, doesn’t answer whether Democratic Senate candidates would have better prospects with or without Biden as their presidential nominee.
