Special counsel Jack Smith, left, seen in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 1, and former President Donald Trump, seen in Palm Beach, Florida, on Nov. 8, 2022. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal brought by X, Elon Musk's social media company, declining to decide whether prosecutors should have been able to obtain data from former President Donald Trump's Twitter account without him being notified. The case arose as part of special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into Trump over alleged election interference in 2020, which the Supreme Court stymied earlier this year by ruling that presidents have broad immunity from prosecution for official acts taken in office. Smith has already obtained the data at issue in the appeal brought by X, as Twitter is now known following Musk's takeover of the social media company. A federal judge approved the warrant, as well as a nondisclosure order that prevents X from telling Trump or anyone else about it.

CNN —The question for prosecutors reexamining the murder convictions of Lyle and Erik Menendez is not whether they killed their parents, but how culpable they really are. Here’s a look at the timeline of the case over the decades, from the initial shooting to the recent efforts to alter their sentence. July 1993: The Menendez brothers go on trial in a Los Angeles courtroom, each with a separate jury, in a trial televised on Court TV. MILWAUKEE — Former President Donald Trump has never stopped propagating falsehoods that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. “The Democrat Party is guilty of the Worst Election Interference in American History,” Trump wrote Wednesday on social media after the judge overseeing his federal election interference case in Washington released a redacted filing from special counsel Jack Smith. Trump’s campaign did not provide a response to questions about his repeated use of the “election interference” label. It’s part of an extensive pattern of false election-rigging claims from Trump — beyond his well-documented lies about the 2020 election. He was among the 139 GOP House members who objected to the 2020 election certification.

WASHINGTON — A group of national security experts led by Cabinet members from the Trump administration endorsed former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, citing his foreign policy record and calling him "a peacemaker." The group, organized by former Trump national security adviser Robert O'Brien and former National Security Council chief of staff Alex Gray, wrote in a letter that "securing peace" is "the legacy of Trump." The letter comes amid an escalating conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as well as Russia's war in Ukraine. "The policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have invited conflict, diminished America’s standing around the globe, and imperiled our national security," the letter says. A federal judge on Wednesday unsealed a redacted motion by Special Counsel Jack Smith detailing evidence against former President Donald Trump in his criminal election interference case in Washington, D.C. Judge Tanya Chutkan unsealed the filing less than five weeks before the Republican nominee Trump will face Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, in the 2024 presidential election. If Trump wins the election, he will have the power to order the Department of Justice to dismiss the criminal case against him. "The defendant asserts that he is immune from prosecution for his criminal scheme to overturn the 2020 presidential election because, he claims, it entailed official conduct. S. Iswaran, who was a cabinet member for 13 years and has held the trade, communications and transport portfolios, had pleaded guilty to four counts of improperly receiving gifts and one of obstructing justice. The court said Iswaran, 62, would be allowed to remain on bail for the next few days and begin his jail term on Monday. The case has shocked Singapore, which prides itself on having a well-paid and efficient bureaucracy as well as strong and squeaky clean governance. Iswaran resigned as transport minister after less than three years in the job when he was first charged in January. The prosecution had initially charged him with 35 offenses but proceeded with only five.

Nonetheless, Trump told his advisers that he would claim victory before the ballots were fully counted, prosecutors say. One private political adviser, three days before Election Day 2020, described Trump’s plan as: “He’s going to declare victory. When Trump told the staffer he would not pay the private lawyer spearheading his legal challenges unless the challenges were successful, the staffer told Trump that the private attorney would never be paid. The person is described as White House deputy chief of staff. Therefore, even if some of Trump’s alleged wrongdoing occurred on White House grounds and in front of White House staff, he doesn’t have immunity because that fell under the “political” umbrella, Smith’s team wrote.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is again claiming that special counsel Jack Smith is trying to influence the November presidential election by seeking to make new evidence and witness testimony public as voters start to go to the polls. The brief is aimed at convincing the trial judge in the case – and eventually, higher courts – that Smith’s case can survive under the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that said Trump had at least some presidential immunity in the prosecution. The filing is expected to reveal new evidence against Trump, including what several witnesses testified to in the grand jury proceedings. Sources say the proposed redactions are minimal, blacking the sources of the information and removing witness names, but leaving the substance of what they said about Trump for public view. When Smith filed the sealed brief last week, he defended the proposed redactions as striking the balance between protecting witnesses and maintaining public access to the case.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will remain behind bars, according to a decision filed by the judge overseeing the “Rust” movie armorer's case on Monday. Judge Sommer ruled that Reed’s conviction still holds even though the judge previously determined that the prosecution suppressed evidence in the involuntary manslaughter case against “Rust” star and producer Alec Baldwin. For this reason, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed Baldwin's case, saying New Mexico prosecutors failed to disclose the evidence — a violation of the Brady Law. The sanction of dismissal is the only warranted remedy,” Sommer said of her decision at the time. Morrissey has since asked the judge to reconsider dismissing the case against Baldwin.
