So to say Michigan Democrats were shocked by the mayor's decision to go independent is a bit of understatement. In my experience, most independent candidates who previously ran and won as Democrats or Republicans but then switch do so out of some political necessity. For the less politically engaged, a category that includes many key swing voters, this is a very appealing elevator pitch. But not every state party will be as desperate as Kansas Democrats were in accepting a party-switcher as its party savior. Ultimately, the national environment has never looked more enticing for independent candidates to disrupt the two-party duopoly.

One way they'll do that is by requesting documents like your federal income tax returns, W-2 and current pay stubs, according to Freddie Mac. For instance, income you earn from a rental property you own may be tricky for a mortgage lender to verify, he said. In such instances where you have different forms of income or are self-employed, it may be worth looking into non-conventional mortgage options, said Melissa Cohn, regional vice president of William Raveis Mortgage in New York.

It's called the Brain Care Score. "For example, treating high blood pressure is one of the best ways to prevent both stroke and dementia," Mass General's Brain Care Score overview states. Are you getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, or 75 minutes of high intensity physical activity per week? A higher Brain Care Score is associated with a lower risk of dementia, depression and stroke, according to a study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry. Last month, a paper printed in the medical journal Neurology supported the associations between a high Brain Care Score and a lower risk of developing brain diseases.
