[As in] ‘You’re not paying your bills!” said Steven Rubin, a certified elder law attorney and partner at Drazen Rubin. Why having a customized power of attorney is beneficialIt’s easy enough to download a standard power of attorney form from the internet. But that doesn’t mean the elderly person, if cognitively able, can’t also maintain control over their finances. Other ways to help a loved one avoid financial pitfallsHaving powers of attorney is the most comprehensive way for you to address potential problems with your loved one’s financial behaviors or spot if they’re being scammed. If scammers have been calling frequently, you might consider changing your loved one’s phone number, if you have powers of attorney, Rubin said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told McDonald's late last week about a potential link to an E. coli outbreak, company spokespeople said Wednesday. As of Tuesday, the CDC has attributed 49 cases and one fatality across 10 states to the outbreak, which has been linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers. Roughly a fifth of McDonald's U.S. restaurants are not selling Quarter Pounder burgers at this time. The fast-food chain issued a statement on the outbreak Tuesday evening, shortly after the CDC issued its advisory. Over a two-week period, McDonald's typically sells roughly one million Quarter Pounders in the affected region, the company spokespeople said.

The Summary Four new presumed cases of bird flu in farmworkers in Washington state bring the U.S. total to 31. Washington is the sixth state to report human cases of bird flu, which has spread rampantly in wild birds, poultry and cattle. Six health workers exposed to the patient reported respiratory symptoms. Webby said the virus’ spread in cows for the past 10 months has raised experts’ level of concern because cows are mammals and interact with humans frequently. Itle said cases in poultry were not unexpected in Washington state, because migrating birds passed through during summer and early fall.

CHICAGO — The CDC is deploying a team to Washington state to assess the health of farm workers who culled poultry suffering from bird flu after four workers are presumed to have been infected by the virus, U.S. and state health officials said on Monday. The cases fuel growing concern among public health experts, as infections of U.S. dairy cattle and more than two dozen farm workers have worried scientists and federal officials about the risks to humans. California and Washington have said they are seeking to administer seasonal flu vaccines to farm workers to reduce their risk of being infected with both bird flu and seasonal influenza. “We don’t have evidence yet of transmission between people,” said Roberto Bonaccorso, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is awaiting specimens for testing from Washington and sending a team to support the state’s assessment of farm workers, an agency spokesperson said.

Cancer drains individuals of their physical, emotional, and financial health. In a study from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, nearly half of cancer patients and survivors reported being extraordinarily burdened by medical debt. Financial hardship caused by cancer can also contribute to "financial toxicity," wherein the cost of treatment forces individuals to make tradeoffs that impact their chances of survival. Not only does financial toxicity of cancer care affect the individual, it can also negatively impact their employer. Some may not be aware they're eligible for screening, and stigma and fear associated with cancer screening hinders some people from seeking care.

Zeroing in on cyber insurance as a key area for reform comes as the U.S. government scrambles to find ways to disrupt ransomware networks. For many organizations, deciding whether to pay a ransom is a difficult and urgent decision. The hacker group allegedly demanded a ransom to return the stolen data, though it remains unclear whether NPD paid it. Darren Williams, founder of BlackFog, a cybersecurity firm that specializes in ransomware prevention and cyber warfare, is firmly against paying ransoms. UnitedHealth Group experienced this firsthand after its subsidiary, Change Healthcare, was hit by the ALPHV/BlackCat ransom group in April 2023.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can contaminate food and cause serious complications for certain groups of individuals. Even though cooking the meat kills any listeria that may be present, deli meat can be contaminated afterward during packaging or slicing. Similarly, the ready-to-eat meat products involved in the ongoing BrucePac recall are precooked, although the source of contamination hasn’t yet been determined. Listeria infection early in pregnancy can cause premature labor, a baby with a low birth weight and loss of the pregnancy. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a heart stent made specifically for infants and young children, a device that could help kids born with certain congenital heart defects avoid a series of open heart operations over their childhoods. In some cases, those defects are treated with stents, which prop open blood vessels, ensuring that blood can properly flow through them. “You can imagine that is less than ideal — they’re too big.”This means that as the child grows older and their blood vessels get bigger, stents have to be replaced, often with open heart surgery, Zahn said. “It’s not unusual to have kids who are going into middle school who’ve had four or five or even six open heart surgeries,” he said. Patients are usually able to go home about a day later, compared with around seven days for open heart surgery, including some days in the ICU.

New York CNN —The federal government’s bet on using artificial intelligence to fight financial crime appears to be paying off. The Treasury Department credited AI with helping officials prevent and recover more than $4 billion worth of fraud overall in fiscal 2024, a six-fold spike from the year before. US officials quietly started using AI to detect financial crime in late 2022, taking a page out of what many banks and credit card companies already do to stop bad guys. The Treasury’s use of AI to fight financial crime is just getting started. Officials are testing new data sources to better spot fraud and shady payments, and they are teaming up with state agencies to fight unemployment insurance fraud.

Tobacco product use among middle and high school students has dropped to a 25-year low, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday. Female students reported the biggest decline in use across the board, and Hispanic students also reported a drop in use of any tobacco product. Evidence-based strategies, including price increases, media campaigns and smoke-free policies, are likely part of what caused tobacco product use to drop, according to the agencies. E-cigarettes continue to be the most used among students who reported tobacco product use, at 5.9%, but nicotine pouches are now the second-most commonly used tobacco product, at 1.8%, followed by cigarettes at 1.4%.
