Co-CEO Greg Peters said unlike Amazon, where ads will be the default, Netflix didn't 'force' people to see ads. AdvertisementNetflix just took a swipe at Amazon as the ecommerce giant prepares to launch ads in Prime Video starting next week, taking on Netflix for advertising dollars. Now, Netflix is about to face a heavy-hitting new competitor for ad dollars in Amazon, which will launch ads on Prime Video starting January 29. The ecommerce giant will offer much more scale than Netflix from the get-go because it's making ads the default for 115 million monthly users. Peters didn't have to make an explicit comparison with Prime Video to make the point.

Netflix now has 260.8 million paid subscribers, a new record for the service, it said when it reported quarterly results after the bell Tuesday. The subscriber growth easily tops the 8.76 million paid membership adds Netflix reported in the third quarter. The company also blew past Wall Street's fourth-quarter expectations of 8 million to 9 million. The company posted revenue of $8.83 billion for the quarter, up from $7.85 billion in the year-ago quarter. That's up from 15 million that the company reported in November.

Netflix, which is in a quiet period ahead of earnings, declined CNN’s request for comment. In November, Netflix aired its first-ever live sports event, and its third-ever foray into live programming, called “The Netflix Cup,” a crossover competition between Formula 1 drivers and professional golfers. “We are investing heavily in increasing our live capabilities,” Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company’s earnings call in October. Next, Netflix plans to experiment with a new type of live programming: award shows. But even before the announcement, the number of shows and original programming Netflix churned out had already hit its peak, according to data analyzed by MoffettNathanson.

New Zealand to Send Defence Team to Support Red Sea Security

SYDNEY (Reuters) - New Zealand will deploy a six-member defence team to the Middle East as part of an international coalition to uphold maritime security in the Red Sea, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Tuesday. "Houthi attacks against commercial and naval shipping are illegal, unacceptable and profoundly destabilising," Luxon said during a media briefing. "This deployment ... is a continuation of New Zealand's long history of defending freedom of navigation both in the Middle East and closer to home." They have also deepened concern that fallout from the Israel-Hamas war could destabilize the Middle East. "Any suggestion our ongoing support for maritime security in the Middle East is connected to recent developments in Israel and the Gaza Strip, is wrong," Peters said.

If you do work in movies, you almost certainly have heard of him: He's the guy in charge of Netflix's movie division, and for years, Netflix's movie division made a lot of movies, at a time when lots of studios were shrinking. Now that's changing, and now Stuber isn't going to be at Netflix anymore: Netflix says he's leaving to start his own media company. And a few months after that, when Stuber's name was floated as a possible contender to run Amazon's movie business, he didn't seem long for the place. Now, Stuber said, Netflix was going to cut its output in half so it could make things better things. Asked for comment, a Netflix spokesperson supplied quotes from Stuber, Sarandos, and Bajaria saying nice things about each other.

Before entering the 2024 presidential race, Ron DeSantis proudly touted his conservative record. The governor's fights with Disney didn't endear him to GOP primary voters in the way he had hoped. For decades, tourists have come to the state from all over the world to visit Walt Disney World. But while many GOP voters had a positive opinion of DeSantis, it didn't translate into many votes, no matter what he had done while tussling with Disney. ON BOARD THE USS BATAAN (AP) — When attacks with missiles and drones surged in the Red Sea late last year, crewmembers of the USS Bataan worked round the clock to make sure they were shot down before reaching passing merchant vessels. Weeks later, they are still perfecting that operation in training and simulations, along with a dozen other scenarios, despite moving north to the Mediterranean where commercial marine traffic is at little risk. The U.S. Navy is reshuffling its warship deployment in the Middle East to maintain dominance in the region – now eyeing the longer haul as concerns mount that Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza could set off a regional conflict. The Bataan was sailing toward the eastern Mediterranean Friday after taking part in live-fire exercises with NATO-member Greece on the country’s mainland. “I would say, the difference (after coming to Greece) is that the food is a little bit better.”

I'm a busy mom of two trying family meal deals at chain restaurants to save time and money. I tried Denny's Grand Slam Pack. The $30 "family pack" felt like an incredible value, especially since we had plenty of leftovers. When I heard the breakfast chain Denny's was offering a "family pack" meal deal filled with breakfast-for-dinner essentials like pancakes and scrambled eggs, I was eager to try it. Priced at just $30, Denny's Grand Slam Pack comes with everything a family needs for an elaborate pancake breakfast … or, in my case, dinner.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill to create a bipartisan commission that would tackle the nation’s soaring debt and make policy recommendations to Congress won approval Thursday from a House committee. Many Democrats see the commission as an attempt to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The commission would have 16 members: 12 from Congress, evenly divided by party, and four outside experts who would not have voting power. Republicans blame federal spending for the annual deficits while many Democrats cite tax cuts enacted under Republican administrations. Three committee Democrats voted for it, including Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., who worked with Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich. in sponsoring the bill.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jim Leyland left his living room in Thornburg, Pennsylvania, and had gone upstairs to lie down, convinced the call to Cooperstown wasn't coming. Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark was on the line and Leyland had been voted in, two weeks shy of his 79th birthday. Leyland coached in the Tigers minor league system, then started managing with Bristol of the Appalachian Rookie League in 1971. The Pirates sank from there following the departures of Bonds and ace pitcher Doug Drabek as free agents, and Leyland left after Pittsburgh’s fourth straight losing season in 1996. This year, 59% retailers offer so-called "returnless" or "keep it" policies for unwanted products whose returns costs exceed their value, according to returns services firm goTRG, which surveyed 500 executives at 21 major retailers, including Walmart (WMT.N) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O). That information is "not something that retailers want out there" due to worries the policies could be abused by shoppers, he said. The firm helps retailers manage returns, which typically rise after pre-Christmas sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday and continue beyond Christmas. The typical return costs retailers about $30. "You just can't afford to ignore it," she said of returns costs.
