Fear has not worked. Panic has not worked. All of it has only gotten Mr. Biden’s Irish up, as he would say, igniting a stubbornness that is as key to his political brand as resilience. “He’s beloved, he is respected, and people want him to make that decision, not me,” Ms. Pelosi said on “Morning Joe,” the president’s favorite news show. “I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is.”

To the Editor:Re “The Democratic Party Must Speak the Plain Truth to the President” (editorial, July 10):Democrats cannot have it both ways. Every day that passes without Democrats formulating a new plan to defeat Donald Trump decreases their chances of success. They must speak boldly: President Biden can indeed be part of the plan to defend democracy from Donald Trump, but to do so he must step aside and pass the torch. To the Editor:I am frustrated by the recent New York Times headlines, and especially the editorials, calling for President Biden to step down as a candidate. Donald Trump is the one who should step down.

Washington CNN —After President Joe Biden’s reelection efforts spiraled into chaos following his debate fiasco last month, Democrats who have both stood by and abandoned Biden since then see Tuesday as a decisive day for the president’s political future. Jeffries listened as he was confronted with concerns and frustrations from all factions of the caucus during House Democrats’ Tuesday meeting. But instead of a united front, Democrats emerged from the meeting without consensus or a clear path forward. Even though a number of lawmakers expressed their support for Biden, the concerns stuck with many Democrats after the meeting. House Democrats gathered on Tuesday to discuss steps forward with Biden’s campaign.

“I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump,” Biden wrote in the letter, obtained by CNN. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us,” Biden concluded. More than a handful of top House Democrats told Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday that Biden needs to step aside amid concerns about down-ballot Democratic races. Biden offered a confusing response to a question about his letter to Hill Democrats calling for unity and lambasted Trump for being on the golf course after the debate. "I'm getting so frustrated by the elites in the party" calling on him to step down, the president fumed. President Joe Biden speaks to supporters during a campaign rally at Sherman Middle School on July 05, 2024 in Madison, Wisconsin. On Saturday, House Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., officially called on Biden to bow out of the presidential race. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Il., made his own announcement during an MSNBC interview Friday, just before the full ABC News 22-minute interview aired. They join a growing choir of Democratic lawmakers, donors and strategists losing faith in Biden's ability to wage a successful campaign against Trump. Earlier this week, former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., some of Biden's closest allies, publicly validated concerns about Biden's fitness for reelection.

Biden was examined by his physician after the debate to check on a cold, the White House said, but it was a “brief check” and not a physical. Biden and his aides have said it was a “bad night.” The White House press team said Biden had a cold but did not take any medications to treat symptoms. The White House has rejected requests from the press to release more medical records and question Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor. PoolWe often hear that observing a candidate on the campaign trail is the best assessment of the individual’s physical and cognitive health. Back in 2020, Biden said he was “constantly tested” by the work of running for president.

I’m not leaving,” Biden declared to spooked campaign staff on a phone call on Wednesday as he searched for an elusive comeback. And even a far more competent damage control effort than the White House and the Biden campaign have mounted so far would have struggled to erase that impression. On Wednesday for instance, the White House picked up Biden’s line that he was jet lagged after two trips to Europe in early June. And Biden had the Democratic governors to the White House. The White House and the campaign said the reports were false.

Every effort the president and his White House and campaign teams make to fix the problem end up exacerbating it. U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the Middle East in the State Dining room at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 31, 2024. For likely voters, Trump led Biden by a slightly smaller 6-point margin, though that was 3 points higher than before the debate. The New York Times poll surveyed 1,532 registered voters across the country from June 28 to July 2. While Biden's campaign continues its blitz, pressure mounts for the president to consider bowing out of the 2024 race. In response, the White House and the Biden campaign have rolled out a slate of events for the coming week to reassure the public.

President Biden and his advisers rushed to stem the first serious defections inside the Democratic Party since his shaky debate last week, as leading Democrats lent legitimacy to questions about his mental acuity and raised the specter of replacing him atop the ticket. Mr. Biden’s operation hoped to assert fresh control on Wednesday, holding a call with a group of Democratic governors, in person and virtually, as he seeks to shore up support after days of private hand-wringing went public in sudden and quick succession. On Tuesday, Mr. Biden suffered his first formal call to resign from the race from a Democratic member of Congress. But a private set of polls from a pro-Biden super PAC leaked to the news site Puck showed the president losing ground — around two percentage points — across all the most important battleground states. He was also now trailing in New Mexico, New Hampshire and Virginia, three states that were not seen a year ago as likely even to be contested seriously by Republicans.

President Biden should do the same,” Doggett said in his statement Tuesday. “There’s a large and increasing group of House Democrats concerned about the president’s candidacy, representing a broad swath of the caucus,” another House Democratic lawmaker told CNN on condition of anonymity to speak candidly. They have held off going to Biden directly, hoping he would make the decision himself, but patience is wearing thin, multiple Democrats told CNN, amid signs that Biden has taken no steps to seriously consider the mounting concerns. Democratic Party grandees, meanwhile, crowded onto Sunday talk shows to try to turn attention away from Biden’s confused and painful debate showing and to put the spotlight back on Trump. But any set of bad polls showing an already-tough reelection bid was seriously damaged by the debate could trigger panic again. The ferocious counterattack by Biden’s campaign, however, is not answering fundamental questions posed in the aftermath of a debate that shattered confidence in Biden’s capacity to beat Trump for many of his fellow Democrats. Voters saw Biden’s reduced and poignant state with their own eyes. Biden campaign manager Jennifer O’Malley Dillon even blamed any poor forthcoming polls on the media and not the president.
