The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has continued to emerge as an economic winner of increasing geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, though risks from fragmentation remain, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says. Though U.S.-China tensions have been deteriorating in recent years, ASEAN has adapted and continued to integrate with the global economy, the IMF said in its latest Asia-Pacific Outlook report, released Friday. "Despite geopolitical tensions, ASEAN has continued to strengthen trade and investment links with both China and the U.S.," the report said. "[T]he region has even been able to take advantage of trade diversion opportunities caused by US-China trade tensions," the report added. Overall, the IMF says these trends have contributed to the ASEAN region increasing its share of inward foreign direct investment, world exports and global value added.

After a messy election, the Bank of Japan decided to hold its benchmark policy rate at 0.25%, as expected. These outlook risks highlight that the timing of the next BOJ rate hike could depend heavily on developments overseas, as well as the exchange rate and its impact on the Japanese economy, Otani added. He added that it would surpass the 13 trillion yen ($84.6 billion) allocated in last year's supplementary budget. When Ishiba returns, he is expected to hold an extraordinary Diet session, during which he hopes to pass the supplementary budget plan, according to local news. Then I would probably rule out a rate hike in December, because that would create a lot of uncertainty about the fiscal situation."

Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have built a new and unusual aircraft carrier, intriguing experts with a potentially first-of-its-kind vessel that could further increase Beijing’s rapidly expanding maritime power. This potential new aircraft carrier “is of a somewhat unusual shape and size – much smaller than China’s previous naval aircraft carriers,” said Thomas Shugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Another view of the satellite imagery captured on October 23, 2024, showing a potentially new class of a Chinese aircraft carrier at a shipyard in the southeastern end of the country. Only the United States Navy operates aircraft carriers bigger than the Fujian. Conducted in the South China Sea, the exercise was “aiming to enhance the integrated combat capability of the aircraft carrier formations” and was “part of the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation’s regular real-combat training in the high seas,” Xinhua said.

He added, "Votes of union workers in the United States against tentative agreements tend to reflect the white-hot anger of union employees against their employers. Tentative agreements are their only chance for them to express their frustration with their employer and their anger at the way they have been treated." A BNSF spokesperson said it is planning to attend the formal national labor negotiations even as it has announced nine tentative union agreements, five of which have already been ratified. It also has tentative agreements with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), SMART-TD, SMART-TD-YDM (Yardmasters Department), the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, and Iron Ship Builders (IBB). SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea test-fired a suspected long-range ballistic missile that is designed to strike the continental United States, its neighbors said Thursday, days before the U.S. presidential election. This would be the first ICBM launch since December for North Korea, a reclusive nuclear-armed state that has been ratcheting up its rhetoric against the U.S. and its allies South Korea and Japan. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani later said the missile fell into the sea off North Korea’s east coast around 8:37 a.m. He said the launch time of 86 minutes would be the longest ever for a North Korean missile test, and that it could be a new type of missile. North Korea has said the deployment is a “rumor,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin did not deny the reports when asked about them by NBC News last week.

While the hardware sales are certainly profitable, they pale in comparison to the profitability of Apple's Services. It's impossible to do consistently, and that's why Jim Cramer always says "own, don't trade" Apple stock. During the reported quarter, Apple returned over $29 billion to shareholders, including $3.8 billion in dividends and equivalents and another $25 billion via the repurchase of 112 million shares. Though Services sales missed the mark, gross income managed to outpace expectations thanks to significant year-over-year margin expansion. The growing installed base of active devices is of course translating into strong engagement with Apple's services.

Linde Why we own it: The industrial gas supplier and engineering firm has a stellar track record of consistent earnings growth. Other companies in the industrial gas space have a shakier track record at this, especially for clean hydrogen projects. “(It) doesn’t matter who it is (that wins),” one social media user wrote in a popular comment on China’s X-like platform Weibo. “There’s no perfect system, but at least they allow people to question them,” one social media user said on Weibo. Both Harris and Trump have been hot topics on Chinese social media platforms. Harris appeared to be relatively unknown to Chinese social media users prior to becoming the Democratic candidate after Biden’s July withdrawal from the race. But Trump is still seen in Beijing’s policy circles as likely to drive a more fractious relationship with China than Harris would.

It is clear what Russia stands to gain from an influx of some 10,000 North Korean troops to aid its war in Ukraine. North Korean troops are expected to help with that. North Korea, for its part, needs a partner that will shield it from the United Nations Security Council as it pursues its nuclear ambitions. “North Korea is trying to get as many benefits as it can from this relationship,” said Edward Howell, an expert on North Korea at the Chatham House think tank. “If thousands of North Korean troops learn how to survive on a battlefield full of drones,” Gabuev said, “that is a lesser problem than North Korea having quieter nuclear-capable submarines.

The focus on advanced technologies has put the two countries into a different kind of arms race. The US Air Force secretary suggested that AI could be decisive in future warfare. CNN —A small number of North Korean troops are already inside Ukraine, according to two western intelligence officials, and officials expect that number to grow as the North Koreans complete training in eastern Russia and move toward the front lines of the war. The North Korean troops’ presence inside Ukraine goes a step beyond what NATO and the Pentagon confirmed on Monday, which is that roughly 10,000 North Korean troops are training in eastern Russia with some en route to Russia’s Kursk region. A US official said the US can not yet corroborate reports that North Koreans troops are already inside Ukraine. The Russians have been teaching North Korean soldiers basic Russian commands in training, like “fire” and “in position,” South Korean lawmakers told reporters on Tuesday. ‘The number may rise’South Korean intelligence has put the number of North Korean troops inside Russia right now at about 13,000, higher than the US and the UK.
