As Wall Street financiers snapped up huge swaths of the nation’s rental housing market in recent years, the deals sailed through unchallenged. But large purchases of rental homes and apartment buildings by private equity firms like KKR are another cause, research shows. The Private Equity Stakeholder Project, a nonprofit that monitors the industry’s impact on individual Americans, has identified more than 5,100 apartment complexes owned by more than 30 private equity companies in America, totaling almost 1.4 million units. Jim Baker, executive director at the Private Equity Stakeholder Project, welcomes the scrutiny the senators are bringing to the KKR transaction. More than two-thirds of the apartment units in those states are owned by private equity, he said.

HONG KONG — Scientists have discovered dinosaur fossils for the first time in Hong Kong. The bones were “scattered, fragmented, and weathered” when unearthed in a UNESCO-listed geopark in the Chinese territory’s Port Island, authorities said in a separate handout. “Experts infer that the dinosaur may have been buried by sand and gravel after its death, later exposed to the surface by floods, and then reburied at the discovery site,” it said. Hong Kong has previously found many plant and animal fossils, including ostracod and ammonite fossils from about 400 to 190 million years ago, but this is the first time dinosaur fossils have been unearthed in the city, the handout said. “The discovery of this dinosaur fossil is considered very lucky,” it said, noting that despite Hong Kong’s Jurassic to Cretaceous geological layers, which could contain dinosaur fossils, local researchers had not found any in more than a century of geological surveys.

On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

An Italian surfer died last week after being impaled by a swordfish while surfing in Indonesia, local media reported. Fabio Giulivi, the mayor of Manfrini’s hometown, Venaria, said the surfer was “tragically” taken from her loved ones in the prime of her life. “The news of her death has left us shocked and makes us feel powerless in the face of the tragedy that took her life so prematurely,” Giulivi wrote in an Instagram post. To the Editor:Re “Biden’s Moral Failure on Israel,” by Peter Beinart (Opinion guest essay, Oct. 11):There is much about Israel’s behavior toward Arabs to be condemned, but the horrors of Oct. 7, 2023, cannot be ignored. Israel had a right to retaliate, and the fact that Hamas refuses to stop fighting gives Israel the right to continue fighting. The nightmare of Gaza was started by Hamas and can be finished by Hamas. The nightmare of the West Bank is another story, and there is much blame to be placed on Israel. The politics of the United States is in the middle of this problem, and there is no easy way to deal with it.

Disney is no longer letting new customers sign up for Hulu or Disney+ via Apple's App Store. Disney is now telling would-be customers to pay for subscriptions on Disney's own site, instead of on Apple's App Store — though people who've already started paying for either service via Apple can keep doing that. But the App Store split does represent a rift between two longtime partners, so it's definitely worth noting. Disney's rationale is clear here: When customers sign up for Disney subscription services via Apple, Apple takes up to 15% of the monthly fees those services generate. Just like Netflix in 2018, Disney has decided that the services Apple offers through its App Store — the ability to market to and bill a giant installed base — aren't worth giving up a meaningful chunk of revenue.

One of the last Navajo Code Talkers, who helped secure an Allied victory in World War II by sending crucial messages in a code based on the Navajo language, has died. “On behalf of the entire Navajo Nation, our Navajo veterans and service men and women, First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and me, we extend our sincerest condolences and prayers to the family of Mr. Kinsel,” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said announced on social media. Window Rock, Arizona AP —John Kinsel Sr., one of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers who transmitted messages during World War II based on the tribe’s native language, has died. With Kinsel’s death, only two Navajo Code Talkers are still alive: Former Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald and Thomas H. Begay. Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the Marines to serve as Code Talkers during the war, transmitting messages based on their then-unwritten native language. The Code Talkers sent thousands of messages without error on Japanese troop movements, battlefield tactics and other communications crucial to the war’s ultimate outcome. President Ronald Reagan established Navajo Code Talkers Day in 1982 and the August 14 holiday honors all the tribes associated with the war effort.
